  1. 1. Whether it's for skill progression or simple fun, weather you play like that on every megawad or only pull it out for special maps, or even beyond any and all rational explination; which is your faviorite?

Note for "100%-ing": Doesn't matter whether it's just getting max kills, max secrets, max items, or max combination-of-the-3: do numer goes up make happier over all else?

As for me: I've had plenty of experience with Ultra Violence, single segmenting, and 100% killing. however I've been going thru Valient on HMP continuous and the further along I go in it the less I've been mid-game saving, I think I'm slowly becoming a saveless player...

My ultimate goal in every map is to scour it clean: All Kills, All Secrets.

All Items is less important; but I do try to collect all "big" pickups, like Soul Spheres, Megaspheres, Invisibilities, Night-Visions, Berserks, and the sort.

Pistol starting and doing a map saveless. I don't like 100% things in any fps in general since most of the time is not satisfying for me and it feels really obtuse. On the other hand, doing a pistol start immediately makes you think different about how to approach a map, to the point it doesn't feel the same when i play the map single segment, like something is wrong. Saveless because compared to other fps games, in doom doesn't feel that necessary doing it for me, since everything is more straight forward, and most solutions aren't that difficult to figure out. Okay, some hard setpiece would probably play an entire 15+ map again, but outside of that, i don't feel like saving that often since I don't find myself in those situations often. Also completing a map saveless is a fucking ego trip, literally completing any slightly difficult map feels like an achivement.

I always try to 100% levels, even on the first try.

Eventually, I do give up and check what I'm missing in the editor.

I was of the mindset that pistol starts UV saveless was the way to go - then I played Sunlust and Ancient Aliens. These didn't break me, but it started becoming unfair. You wanna know what finally got me?

The adventures of FUCKING square E2.

Some of the maps in that are like 30+ minutes long and I eventually just stopped caring. Nowadays I still get to keep my pride a bit as I play everything on HNTR mostly saveless, but for instance, for the DWMC this month there were like 3 maps where I ended up using saves because I just kept dying far into the map and it wasn't fun. So yeah, I try to shoot for saveless, but not UV anymore like most people would probably shoot for. My advice to anyone who's stuck in the "I must play on UV for every wad for I am a SUPER MACHO DOOMER!" mindset is to realize that if it stops being fun, you're really only torturing yourself for an accomplishment likely few will care about in the long run. Obvs there are exceptions like the REALLY hard maps ie Okuplok and certain Sunder maps but for most PWADs, just play how you want to. 100% secrets and kills is probably a much better "self-imposed challenge" to have since it's not bound by difficulty and you can save as you want and come up with your own rules a lot more broadly.

Just my 2 cents.

Playing solo-net/coop spawns on maps where the mappers threw in random cyberdemons/spider masterminds for multiplayer without any regard for balancing.

What’s the difference between saveless and single-segment?

Anyway, I enjoy pistol starting and casual 100%:ing. Pretty much the ”Dean of Doom”-rules, I suppose. For instance, I won’t do the pain elemental trick on Industrial Zone just to meet 100% secrets, but anything obtainable thru conventional means, sure.

I guess I should've clarified saveless as "no mid-level saves". like you can play a map with 0 saves except for the very beginning of the map to maintain a continuous playthru, just as you can abuse mid-level saves while still doing a single-segment run and starting from a clean slate every map

For some odd reason I've been more and more invested in trying to score a Deathless Run on blind playthroughs. I've also yet to succeed once since this compulsion seeped into my brain-pan lol.

What do you mean by "single-segment"? Is that speedruns? As for me, I think getting as far as you can through an episode/game/the series as you can without a death is the most engaging form of replayability, you'll have figured out the gist pf each map and be able to put all of those tricks you've learned to the test

Pistol Start, I meant pistol-start

why the hell didn't I just make the poll say Pistol-Start?

I like to get as many kills in DM without dying for as long as I can. I don’t care about single player self imposed challenges, I just want to have fun, but DM I like to challenge myself to be the best I can and it’s still loads of fun.

Honestly, my only challenge is to play more.

My main focus in doom is mapping but to make better maps, i need to understand maps better from the player's perspective. Study the masters like artists do, so to say.

These days:

1) Trying to do parts of maps arbitrarily well. If I am playing a set like Stardate 20x7, I don't want to just get past a hard fight once after dying a handful of times and move on to the next part. I want to be able to understand some hard fights well enough to beat them multiple times in a row.

2) Taking parts of maps and playing them with arbitrary constraints, like in this section of 180mpv map19 I wanted to unleash the second wave while the first cyber was still alive and as soon as I could.

(Hadn't practiced this before. I am mostly just winging it. The first attempt looks cleaner because it gets way luckier with infighting.)

Imo both of those are much better ways to improve than just indiscriminately no-saving, but I usually do it for analysis' sake, because it'll teach you so much about a fight's dynamics -- not to improve or even as a challenge.

I usually play with saves during casual play. Especially because I write criticism, and even if it's a really easy map, it really helps to be able to get back to any part of that 40+ minute long map without having to replay it right afterwards. So unless I am FDA-ing a map, I usually throw down several save slots. I'll sometimes use 8-12 saves in maps with baby-tier difficulty.

When I play saveless, it is usually because "Why would you save on Entryway?" If a map is short enough, saves aren't needed for the above and just get in the way. But most of the time when I do it during casual play, I don't think of it as an arbitrary challenge.

Pistol starting each level of a megawad without saves. They sure last a little bit longer that way :)
