Artman2004 Posted August 8, 2023 How do you pronounce the letter "z"? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Azuris Posted August 8, 2023 Zed Because english isn't my native Language and i simply use the most similiar to mine. Zett - German Zeta - Spanish I am getting often confused when People use Zee, as it is very similiar to C. But english spelling is broken netherless :D 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Aaron Blain Posted August 8, 2023 (edited) I'm going to take this opportunity to shill for The Spectrum Show. I'm from Ohio, but I love referring to the thing as the "Zedecks". Is 'zed' a UK thing or is it everybody from the Commonwealth? I don't think Canadians say 'zed' but I'm not sure about Australasia. I've also watched a lot of tech tutorials made by residents of the former British Empire, but I don't remember whether I hear 'zed' from South Asians even when they have thick British-English accents. Murdoch Posted August 8, 2023 Here in New Zealand zed is more common. Though oddly I do say zeedoom not zed-doom. I think zee is, as others have said, primarily an American thing like pronouncing solder sodder etc. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Thomased22 Posted August 8, 2023 Zee is my preference but I'm not impartial to Zed. Though mainly for less general uses. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Individualised Posted August 8, 2023 (edited) If this is a serious question from a non-native speaker and not a topic designed to cause a flame war then it's dialectal - American English only uses "zee" and British English only uses "zed". Astar Posted August 8, 2023 In school we were only told to use "zed" as the only correct pronunciation 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

plums Posted August 8, 2023 Just now, Individualised said: "Zed" is correct in Canadian English but Canadians don't really use it, especially younger Canadians. Huh, I'm Canadian and I've literally never heard anyone born in Canada say zee that I can remember, but I don't really interact with young people so I believe it if you say zee is a thing now. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr. Freeze Posted August 8, 2023 Zee. A "Zed" is a mutant from Killing Floor. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Herr Dethnout Posted August 8, 2023 Now that people are saying, I realize how confusing is saying Z as "Zee", because is phonetically similar as C. So yeah, "Zed" sound way better but I'm accustomed with "Zee"... lol 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Midway64 Posted August 8, 2023 zetazetazeta... and about the zed... is it said 'sid' for seed? Or by another way? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Individualised Posted August 8, 2023 (edited) 3 minutes ago, ValveMercenary said: zetazetazeta... and about the zed... is it said 'sid' for seed? Or by another way? Rhymes with "bed". Also "i" in English isn't pronounced like in other languages so "sid" does not sound like "seed" to native speakers, I've heard that if your native language does not have that sound though then it can be hard to distinguish between the two. Midway64 Posted August 8, 2023 (edited) Shoulda pointed out that 'sid' as in pronunciation. Coming from Oxford languages Edited August 8, 2023 by ValveMercenary I swear Firefox likes to duplicate. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Caffeine Freak Posted August 9, 2023 Zee is alive and well. Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Stupid Bunny Posted August 9, 2023 Zulu. Or alternatively I use the Rogue standard to help spell over the phone. “That’s Zombie, Hobgoblin, Emu….” No but I’ve been living in Ireland the last while so I’ve had to adjust to calling it zed so as not to confuse everybody. Also “Haich” instead of “aich” for H (which I guess makes sense, that H would start with an H sound.) 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Guff dotD Posted August 9, 2023 I use 'z'. (Which one I am referring to is up to individual interpretation.) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
DerBlanca Posted August 9, 2023 Zed sounds cooler, that's what I always used. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted August 9, 2023 Zee. Try saying "Zed" with an American accent and just see how many odd looks you get.:P) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Chow Yun Thin Posted August 9, 2023 Zee, although once during a very staticky phone call I had to say "Z as in zoo" to get the letter across. 1 hour ago, Mr. Freeze said: Zee. A "Zed" is a mutant from Killing Floor. Specimen, please. I never did like the overuse of Zed in the second game much like how badass was overused in Borderlands 2. But I seriously doubt anyone else was gonna call them Specimens like in the mod, or Specs as if they're fighting a bunch of eyewear. Eh, I just edited the strings in the .int files to replace Zed with Specimen and left it until the next game update overwrote it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
BeachThunder Posted August 9, 2023 I say 'zed'. With (G)ZDoom, sometimes I say ZeeDoom, other times I say ZedDoom. Although, when I go with the latter, I always think "cheesy Doom". 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
taufan99 Posted August 9, 2023 As a non-native English speaker, I'm much more accustomed to the American accent, so I use "zee". "Zed" is how it's spelled in my native language though. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Capellan Posted August 9, 2023 Zed The use of 'zee' is becoming more common in Australia due to US media influence. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
