Fires In Hawaii, And Climate Change In General

Are we sure those wildfires are not caused by a bunch of pyromaniacs?  Although climate change may be exacerbating the situation, I find it hard to believe that these wildfires are not of criminal origin.

Reminds me when I was living in Oregon and one of the worst fires was there was due to a kid playing with fireworks.

He ended up with millions and millions in fines to pay for restitution. Good luck with that!

The real problem seems to be the response. Apparently, several emergency systems failed to warn anyone, and the people who are responsible during this sort of crisis dropped the ball somehow.

I think this is starting to remind me of the wildfires that spread in Texas like back in 2011, people were losing there lives and losing there homes, its totally out of control in Hawaii, I even think a volcano erupted was the cause of this Hawaiian wildfires.

People said this exact thing about the fires that tore through Australia in the first half of 2020 and all I can say to that if their IS evidence that arsonists are more active now then they where previously, it would be in the interests some very powerful groups to make sure we all knew about it and secondly, that would be a pretty convenient justification for giving yet more power and money to law enforcement which to be fair, is a big part of most governments plans to deal with climate change, but it isn't likely to stop the fires.

Oh, and if you're like me and you lose your job because 2 years later when your workplace gets flooded in your second "once in a lifetime flooding" (and my dad's third!) in your city there's not really anyone you can arrest for that, but you might get to see what this newly empowered law enforcement can do if you can't make your rent in a housing crisis!

(I'm fine btw, thank you mum and dad)

Evidence suggests power lines snapping due to high winds were to blame for a lot of it.

First, glad that things are fine.

Second, the bolded part really drives home this shit. It seems that we are just filled with multiple once in a life time events, and when those become "the norm", then really hammers down the frustration and cynicism of the fight against climate change.

  • nobody turned off electricity when power lines snapped
  • no emergency siren were activated
  • no emergency broadcasts on news / radio / cellular service
  • coast guard didn’t even know a fire was happening for 3 hours
  • fire fighters miss-prioritized into the wilderness
fire fighters in the city had no water
  • roads leading out of city were blockaded
  • work crews at edge of city tell residents to go back into the fire
  • “those who dodged barricades survived”
  • 1,000 people still missing

This is a ludicrous amount of incompetence. Every organization was just doing their own bullshit and there was zero communication across any of them. These guys did not understand the sheer speed of fire disasters and just sat back thinking they could slowly deal with this like if it were a leaking water pipe.

Are wildfires rare in Hawaii?

Not in this region, news article says that west Maui is fire-prone. There was a previous fire in 2018. They had plenty of time to get their act together about this.

Literally a repeat of the 2018 fires except this time hundreds of children are missing
