Scientist - Unity release

Recommended Posts

Congrats on getting Scientist as an official Doom 2 add-on. I had a ton of fun playing the original Scientist when it was released back in the day. This is a very fascinating look at how you made the new monsters. I do miss the original snowy backdrop for some of the maps. Was there a reason why you changed the setting for those previously snowy levels.

Not too long ago I made patches for both the original Scientist and its updated sequel, with UMAPINFO and Dehacked and all that stuff, had the episodes selectable on the menu, and the game ended before the DM levels. I forgot to actually include them on my patch thread though. I thought the Scientist 2 wad was a neat map pack and rather obscure, quite surprising to see it pop up on the official add-ons. Good thing I didn't port it to the official port myself :D

Clearly we need a Scientist 3 someday, to fill out all 32 slots in full.

Is the unity version different to the idgames one? Don't have Unity so...

Not sure what you mean. map 7-11 are still snowy.

I appreciate your effort. <:D Not sure if there will ever be a scientist 3.

The Unity version has new monsters, weapons, textures, artwork and some improved gameplay. I did submit the latest version to the archives, so it should be there at some point. :)

I know I am biased (I contributed to the project) but this release turned out awesome!

It is full of action and creativity.

This partial conversion is a heavily upgraded version of 'Sci2.wad' from 2005 and is a perfect mix of classic and modern elements.

You play as the Doom space marine and fight against the evil Scientist, who has unleashed the hordes of Hell.

It includes:
* 20 maps including city, Arctic and other-worldly settings
* new textures and graphics
* 3 new enemies including the end boss
* 3 new weapons
* 3 new MIDI Music tracks
* Cool effects like glowing eyes, rocket trail and exaggerated blood.

Be sure to give it a try. You will not be disappointment!

Higher Powers! He made a Remaster of "Scientist"! I downloaded it and immediately started going through it to collect Material for my Review. Oddly enough, but I managed to run it on GZDOOM. The main thing is to convert the File to WAD format.

*Removed link*

The official release was made for the Unity port. The file itself should work with most (if not all) limit removing ports.

However you cannot repost this file! All official mods are appended by id Software so they include most of the unmodified files of both Doom and Doom2.

It is not OK to spread WADs with mostly unmodified (id Software) material ( spread iWADs ).

I am sure you meant no harm, but I need to ask you to take down the link.

Scientist has already submitted a 'bare' version of the project to the id Archive. It should be up any day now.

This will be called "Scientist Compatible' or sci-c.WAD for short.

The compatible version will:

- ONLY contain the modified files.

- have some minor fixes to make it more compatible with the other limit removing ports (including GZDoom).

If you cannot play on Unity port, this will be the go-to WAD.

Everyone is free to take the "19" file from the official release and rename it, to use in their favorite port, but please do not spread the file.

Okay, for the sake of the Author, I did it.

But I have already reached MAP07 and so far I have never noticed any compatibility problems. And it works both on the Unity port and on the Original IWAD "DOOM II" via GZDOOM.

Even Some Mods work without problems.

Thank you for letting me know. I made a new text file using the text maker and re-submitted the files. :)

The submitted wad is now called Scientist 2023 / sci2023.wad

I passed "Scientist 2023"! Remastered turned out cool.

If we compare it with the Original 2005, then the Graphic Changes are gorgeous (Although it's a pity that the USSR Base has become the Usual Base of a Scientist... Okay, less "Cranberries"!). I also noticed that Roland completely got rid of the Old Sprite Guns, which is correct, since in the Original Two Shotguns and a Crossbow looked stupid. But replacing a Flamethrower, a Local Plasma Gun, with Bi-O-force Guns is a bit of a strange decision. It seems closer to the Atmosphere of WAD, but it has become more difficult to fight monsters. Not good, but not bad either. But at least the Grenade does not cause Damage to us, even on that "Thank you"! And so I'm happy with the Remastered version!

Just one question: "WHY DID YOU CUT OUT ALL THE USER MUSIC?!" No, seriously, Id Software did not allow the use of third-party tracks?

Please stop writing everything in bold text and all caps. It makes it look like you're constantly shouting at the screen.

Sorry, it's just that I always highlight in bold for better display. And I rarely write Caps, or even avoid them altogether.

But I'm just shocked: Why did he cut out the MIDI tracks of "Dream Theater"? Is it really a matter of Copyright? If so, why couldn't an Alternative be found?

Of course it's a matter of copyright. Do you they would've actually tried to reach out to the five guys in the band (or rather, their legal representatives) and been like "hey uhhhh can we use your music in this Bethesda-sanctioned Doom modification"?

I thought so! A little insulting. The remaster feels incomplete without their MIDI tracks. But at least the tracks of "Ocean's Edge" remained! Only with "Price of Progress" I associate "Scientist". I can't imagine without this music on the Title Screen and Intermission.

Nothing about this is insulting or shocking, and loudly demanding an explanation from the authors for this is way out of line, especially considering its not even remotely surprising that using unlicensed commercial music is a no-go. This isn't a new thing.

Besides, it's not like the original wad has been taken off the archives -- the music is still there. I'm sure it won't take long before someone makes a wad that restores the original soundtrack for the new version, for those that want it back. Mods are good.

Yes, it can be understood! The Creator doesn't want any extra hassle either. I understand the author.

It's just weird. WAD 2005 and such changes. I have direct associations with "Sonic Origins", where the Original Tracks were torn out of "Sonic 3 & Knuckles", replacing them with Prototypes in Degraded Quality. But with "Scientist" the case is a little different. Maybe.

I am generally surprised how "Dream Theater" did not send letters to the Author of WAD back in 2005.

it's a different situation.  having midi renditions of popular music in a mod that isn't designed to make money isn't infringing on anyone.  but the new version is packaged with Doom itself, which is a commercial product.  if someone's making money off of it, then it has to be licensed, and that's a whole lot of hassle for something that would be easier to simply replace.

I have suggestion - why not include another download mirror within page itself? That way people will have another option to try project before idgames release is resolved properly if they don't feel opening unity doom port.

Just a quick aside: it isn't necessary to rename a wad to resubmit it to idgames -- you can resubmit it with the same name.

I think I've played recently this wad, so here's a video If you are interested:

But seems like this version doesn't have all these fancy new textures.

There is no New Monster there either. Scidemon replaces the Cacodemon in the New Version, and the Scientist is completely different. Even the Old Guns have been changed to Standard Sprites from "DOOM" (Not counting Claws instead of a Chainsaw and Bi-O-force Guns instead of a Flamethrower). In my opinion, if you play "Scientist", it's better to go straight to the 2023 version. You won't lose anything.

Can it be uploaded elsewhere? It was rejected again.

EDIT: I noticed it was re-uploaded. I'll wait for it in /newstuff.

Yeah, the old weapons looked pretty bad so we decided to create new weapons and this time make them fit with the story of Scientist.
The Soviet stuff looked really cool but it didn't add to the Scientist lore.

Indeed the removed music was a licensing issue.

Yeah, I think sci2023 is a more telling name. :)

...well, I guess that's my cue isn't it? Might as well package it with the sci.wad and sci2.wad patches I already made, ha
