HUUSH LUNCHEON Posted August 13, 2023 Figured I'd post the MIDI that I made for my first attempt at a custom DOOM map, RUNOFF! Thought I'd give MIDI making a shot, and found it pretty enjoyable. It's mixed with the portmidi option in mind, because fluidsynth is really fussy with the volume of certain instruments for no apparent reason. Give it a listen, and tell me what you think! Any feedback is appreciated, just don't be too nice. Download the MIDI here: SUCCUMBENCE.zip 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
plums Posted August 13, 2023 Sounds good! I liked the opening/middle bits more than the rock-y main sections, purely as personal taste. Accordingly I thought the second half of the rock section went on kind of too long, without being different enough from the first, but that could just be from me liking the other parts more. Fluidsynth can give you all kinds of issues, were you just using Windows' default midi or were you using a Soundfont? In particular Fluidsynth uses the Soundfont defaults for chorus/reverb levels, ignoring what you set them in the midi file itself, and its default chorus settings makes things REALLY LOUD. A lot of ports these days pass more sane values to Fluidsynth but I don't know about all of them. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Listening back with your criticism in mind, it does get repetitive in the second half. I could have put some effort into some unique drum fills or bass riffs, instead of the same four-bar pattern for most of the song. I kind of expected the solos to fill in where that lacked, but it comes up a little short in the end. Still, thanks for listening! 2 hours ago, plums said: Fluidsynth can give you all kinds of issues, were you just using Windows' default midi or were you using a Soundfont? It's easy enough to turn off chorus and reverb, but for whatever reason the picked bass and saw wave were both stuck playing at the same high volume in fluidsynth, no matter how quiet I tried to set them. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
