DOSBox-staging greenish palette

Recommended Posts

A slightly green-tinted palette, to mimic the way Doom looks under the current stable release of DOSBox-staging, which turns out to be a bug. As per @Lippeth's posts in this thread and elsewhere. The effect is subtle, but it's there.

This isn't a perfect recreation of how things will look under DOSBox-staging because any wad with a custom Doom palette will override this one. I also just used SLADE to generate the effect palettes so I expect at least the radsuit effect to look slightly different. OTOH it now works with any port!

Comparison shots, original palette first.

Nicely done!

After a few tests, it looks to be 1:1 with the soon-to-be-defunct look of DOSBox Staging. I even created my own playpal from the screenshot I captured using the custom wad from the other thread to compare with yours, and it's the same right down to the hex values (not that I don't trust you, I just wanted to walk through the process and see for myself).

One thing to note is that generating a colormap from the playpal will break the effect; while it does retain the green hue and actually looks smoother (and arguably better), it no longer mimics DOSBox Staging.

I can't imagine this will get much use by very many, and it's probably for the best that DOSBox Staging now uses correct grey values, but I appreciate the work and am so glad that the unintended bug has been expanded to use in any source port! It's difficult to describe what I love about the dark grey colors having this particular brand of green hue, but it adds a gritty atmosphere in certain wads that I find particularly enjoyable. Sometimes the wrong way is the right way!
