I am playing Quake 2 remastered and i kinda don't like it. Hear me out. The reason i don't like it is because i've spoiled on the gothic / eldritch horror theme so much, going from that to Sci-fi action shooter kinda makes my brain go brrrrrr. Not saying Quake 2 is a bad game, it's fun and i do like the weapons and everything....but i miss the eldritch horror / gothic stuff you know. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
DoomPlayer00 Posted August 17, 2023 A remaster/slight remake of Black would be nice. As detailed and fun as the game was, it did suffer heavily from still being on 6th console generation. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Are you not familiar with Black Mesa? It's such a good remake that it's even better reviewed on Steam now than the original game. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

ASD Posted August 18, 2023 I would like to see console ports of Wolf3D, Blake Stone, Heretic, Hexen, Descent, Redneck Rampage, Blood and Shadow Warrior. Wolf3D was last ported on the 7th gen consoles with slow turning speed and slowed down music. Heretic and Hexen could use the Doom Unity ports with online multiplayer. Not sure how Descent would work with a default controller. Shadow Warrior is free on PC but maybe Devolver could make cash with a new episode and online servers. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted August 18, 2023 (edited) Daikatana Look, I know it's a punchline but there were some genuinely good concepts behind it, but with bug-fixing and fat-trimming, it could be actually really good. As for other games......probably like Killing Time (an FPS that was originally released on 3D0 before being ported to PC) and Marathon but we won't talk much about the latter, because of that idiot mobile game (: Edited August 18, 2023 by LadyMistDragon 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

Like you said bug fixes and fat trimming would make it really good. As far a Marathon goes i think bungie is doing a remake of that game if i recall right but the first two Marathon games, yes i would love to play them since i'm getting into retro fps games. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

QuaketallicA Posted August 18, 2023 (edited) 11 hours ago, xScavengerWolfx said: Like the title says, what retro fps game do you wanna see remastered or remade in modern day. For me what i really want to see as a remastered is Golden Eye 007. Now now i can hear you y'all typing out "But scavenger, they released Golden eye 007 and it's on game pass you focking nerd" my answer to you is this: Yeah i know. I have game pass, i've played it but it's the N64 port of the game not a remake or a remastered of the game. Also the controls are god awful when using a xbox controller. Speaking of remastered / remake games i wanna see done, Time Splitters 2, Turok (a remake and im not talking about the god awful xbox 360 version either), Quake 1 (again like with Turok, a remake not a remastered since it already had a remastered) Half life and Half life 2, Black (if anyone remembers that game same with the next one i am going to say), Area 51, and others i can't think of right in this moment. What do you think should get a remastered or a remake? Love to hear what games deserved it. Oh yeah and by the way NightDive thank you for making Turok 1 a god send to play now. *chef's kiss* god it so good to finally have good pov and not fall to my death since i can't see the edge of the map. I hate remakes and remasters, and in general, think they're both stupid and unnecessary. This is true of most movies, tv, games, etc. Anything from the PS2 gen or later obviously was even good enough when it came out, but even the ugly rough edges of the polygonal days I think deserve to be remembered in their original state. Not everything has to look like it came out today, and if all they do is modernize the graphics, the end product is ironically only going to feel more dated. If it looks like it came out in 2001 and feels like it, then okay fine, you just set your mental clock to 2001 and it feels like the present in 2001. If it looks like 2020 but feels like 2001, then in actuality it feels retro and ancient, because the design mechanics and era don't align with the visuals. That said, I definitely do think there are a few exceptions to this general rule. The recent Quake re-releases are a perfect example of something that doesn't seek to replace the original experience, which is still accessible, only to add extra features and revive interest in an online multiplayer. It simply makes the existing game more accessible to a wider audience of more casual (mostly console) players. Any and all modernizations are optional, and the original exe's are all still there. This is comparable to a special edition DVD or Blu-Ray that includes both the "Director's Cut" and the original "Theatrical Cut" for the viewer to decide for himself which he prefers, and with lots of bonus features typically included too. GOG do a good job on a lot of games like BioShock or System Shock 1. You can choose which version of the game since you get both. Another exception is Tomb Raider Anniversary from 2006. They didn't just improve the visuals to then-contemporary standards, but they also massively overhauled the dated controls, which was a far greater impediment to enjoyment of the original game from 1996. Even the Anniversary edition has rather dated graphics now, but who cares? You don't need to keep modernizing graphics whenever they age as you'll end up with nothing but the same 2 games for all eternity. The 2006 controls are just far more intuitive and make the game more playable. The third reason for a remake is now moot--and that's issues of backwards compatibility. For e.g., Medal of Honor Frontlines and Battlefield 1942 remade for PS3, or Doom 3 on Xbox 360 as opposed to Xbox. Xbox consoles typically have excellent backwards compatibility, so this isn't an issue for them. Playstation has limited access to some old classics if you pay for a subscription. There's been like 3 different versions of Last of Us and other PS exclusives just so they can re-sell the same popular title on latest platforms. Rather wasteful, I think. But Doom 3 for instance suffered on original Xbox, so the 360 port helped let the full version be playable on consoles rather than a downgrade. Finally, there's modern re-releases of old arcade games which have been around forever and already had home ports. These exist to improve compatibility with modern controls, add in online multiplayer (in case of Street Fighter 30th Anniversary), and typically include some CRT/scan-line emulation technology which massively improves the experience of those pixel graphics on modern LCD displays. They even have conveniences like ability to save and re-load or turn back time so you don't have to suffer the punishing Spartan 1-life system those old games used to eat quarters, unless you want to. So yeah, there are some instances where remakes/remasters are justified, but these are the rare exception. Most remakes today are just easy money on the printing press for big companies, because stupid consumers would rather pay money for a slightly prettier version of the game they already have. And some times, even that isn't true. I prefer the graphics of Crysis series compared to the remastered versions which actually look worse in some ways, or the Modern Warfare remasters which take away the lovely look of the IW engine that looked so pretty and realistic to me when it came out. A lot of the gun models and sound effects actually pale in comparison to the originals. Here's a hint, if all you're doing is upping the visual fidelity on a game that was always known purely for visual fidelity and little else, you've got your priorities wrong. Maybe instead of remaking something old in new graphics...how about making something new in new graphics? There's a wild thought. Maybe instead of re-releasing an old movie in HD...how about making a new movie in HD that is as memorable as the old one? Edited August 18, 2023 by QuaketallicA 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Panzermann11 Posted August 18, 2023 (edited) I've got plenty: First Encounter Assault Recon - I'd like to see the game get the Quake 2 treatment. Improve the A.I. and balancing, add all of the console-exclusive content such as instant action, bonus missions and additional multiplayer maps, both the dual SMGs from Xbox 360 and the automatic shotgun from PS3. Add in the expansion packs aswell and probably also a new campaign with all the enemies and weapons from the packs à la Call of the Machine, no re-release is good without expansions included. Grand Theft Auto Trilogy - Not an FPS by any means, but we all know about the so-called "Definitive Edition" and how that turned out to be. What I propose now is for Rockstar to swallow their pride, convince Take-Two not to go after the modding community and hire folks from it, have a decent studio for another re-release. Not only a re-release, but I'd also love for cut and unused content to be added back in where applicable, re-license the radio songs and/or add in new songs, and various other enhancements and quality-of-life. Remaster the Stories games aswell. Half-Life 2 - While I heard a community-made remaster is apparently underway, I'd like it to be not just an engine change and some graphical touch-ups. I'd like to see enhancements to the meshes, textures and sound effects akin to Half-Life Alyx. Having some improvements to A.I., balancing and adding back in cut content such as the stun baton and the S.L.A.M. would be nice aswell. Quake 4 - It's a shame the game is stuck on the Xbox 360 on the console without backwards compatibility support, and the PC version has a few problems on modern systems, ranging from texture being low-quality even when set as high as possible in the settings. I want to see a re-release for Xbox One and Series, PlayStation 4 and 5 and the Switch for consoles, and PC for proper widescreen support, fixed bugs on modern computers, and the bonus content from the Xbox 360 version. If any of these were to happen sooner or later, I hope whoever is in charge do them justice. I don't care if I'm asking too much, if these were done actually well, then I'm all in. There are plenty of sub-par re-releases of games nowadays that they're just pretty much given a bad name. Edited August 22, 2023 by Panzermann11 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Fourth: Again wall of text, i felt like i got blind sided by it lol. But hey everyone has an option and i ain't going to change peoples option. Well, for one, *I* am that generation, being born in '99, and I came to love a lot of 90s games on my own. This started around 2017 or so. My favorite movies and tv shows are from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, ... to now. Secondly, we're not just remastering things from the 90s. We're remastering things from the Xbox 360 gen, the PS4 gen, I've even heard of games from like 2017 or 2018 getting remastered for PS5. Fucking insane. Like I said above, Crysis is a perfect example of a series known for its ball-busting graphics originally, and the remaster's "improvements" are either so negligible as to be impossible to notice or they actually look worse than the original. There is absolutely zero need for a game as modern as the 360 gen to need a remaster. Graphics already looked really great by that point. And I repeat, even if they looked like total polygons like N64 or PS1 gen, that doesn't mean they should be forgotten. If anything, Quake's intentionally unrealistic, abstract art style is what made it so memorable. Why should something be not worth experiencing because it is unlike the present? That's a depressing thought. If something is of its time, let that show! Let it be a time machine for those who weren't around to experience it then. Remasters in a way are just erasing history. And for the record, I think the Doom re-releases, while good for console players, are a pretty terrible way to experience Doom today on PC. The way I most commonly play Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom is in DOSBox where I get no pixelation (unless you're really close to the image) because I play in really low 320 x 200 resolution which is kind of the way it was meant to be viewed. Feels more like a VHS movie than a pixelated mess. Same for most DOS games. For a modern alternative, GZDoom is just a way better source port. There is no reason any PC players should ever touch the re-release of Doom. Plus it altered the medkits to remove the red cross. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Personally, I'm not a big Rockstar fan...they're brilliant storytellers but their games amount to drive here, fight somebody, drive back; ad nauseum. Half-Life 2 literally has amazing graphics. Why on earth would you want a visual upgrade when it looks amazing as is? And, despite being one of the best looking games when it came out, that wasn't even the most impressive part. It was the realistic physics which was mind-blowing. Imagine that. A time when people saw photo-realistic graphics, but they were more impressed by something else that was more innovative. Not just looking real but behaving realistically. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

They didn't just kill off the new UT that was in the works, they also quietly removed Unreal 1/Gold and Unreal II, as well as all the Unreal Tournament games from digital storefronts sometime around this January. So, I'm sorry to say, if you didn't already own the game, you can't get it anymore on Steam, GOG, or anywhere else. Epic seem to have no interest anymore in preserving the legacy of the game series they owe their existence to. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
