natashanightmare Posted August 22, 2023 (edited) Question for those that care about Doom lore. If i have understood it correctly we are on one of mars moons in Doom 1 E1? And the skybox has a bright gray sky and lots of vegetation, would this really make any sense realistically, even in the scenario where we have the type of moonbases that are in Doom 1? Shouldn't the sky atleast be black? and could that type of vegetation ever be grown on a moon even in the future? I feel the vegetation part can be excused by the fact that it is a science fiction game of sorts, but i feel like someone that worked on ID should have reacted on the fact that the sky should be black even then? ''If you were on the Moon, which has no atmosphere, the sky would be black both night and day. You can see this in photographs taken during the Apollo Moon landings.'' Macil Posted August 22, 2023 (edited) The moon of Mars it's supposed to be at, Deimos, has a surface gravity of less than 0.1% of Earth's and is 8 miles wide. Nothing really makes sense about Doom taking place on Deimos. (EDIT: Doom's second episode takes place on Deimos. The first one is on Phobos. Regardless Phobos is nearly as small and unsupporting of the in-game environments.) In the original written plans for Doom's plot, the game was meant to take place on the planet "Tai Tenga", which slightly makes more sense. Maximum Matt Posted August 22, 2023 I just think Bromero heard that Phobos and Deimos is like Latin for 'fear' and 'terror' and was like, "hell yeah" 27 Quote Share this post Link to post
natashanightmare Posted August 22, 2023 Would vegetation alone be able to create a atmopshere on a moon? thus allowing a bright sky? :) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Maximum Matt Posted August 22, 2023 Well, you need an atmosphere first, to grow them in the first place 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
natashanightmare Posted August 22, 2023 So the sky should be black and no vegetation, back to square one. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Klear Posted August 22, 2023 (edited) I'm no astrophysicist, but I doubt Deimos could hold any meaningful amount of atmosphere. You could reach escape velocity there using a bike and a ramp. Edited August 22, 2023 by Klear 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
BeachThunder Posted August 22, 2023 (edited) It's an in-universe holographic sky display. UAC upper management decided to project a picturesque vista of some Chinese mountains in order to boost UAC employee morale.* Spoiler *I'm just making up shit. Biodegradable Posted August 22, 2023 The UAC managed to successfully terraform Phobos at least partially before the demonic invasion took place. Spoiler I'm also making shit up. ;^P 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
thiccyosh Posted August 22, 2023 I dunno man, I think somebody just pained the sky like that. It's only pitch black outside that thick coat of paint 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Klear Posted August 22, 2023 Depends on what they used to paint it. ... Ew! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheMagicMushroomMan Posted August 22, 2023 (edited) DOOM isn't real and the moon landing was fake. The background is black in NASA's photos because they were taken after New Age Sociopathic Assholes turned off the Sky Projector. Someone turned a photo of The Icewall into a skybox for DOOM (1993 computer game), you can find it on the internet if you know where to look. Hope this is helping you. Jayextee Posted August 22, 2023 It's a videogame and the skybox image was adapted from a stock photo of a mountain in China. I may also be just making shit up. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Naarok0fkor Posted August 22, 2023 Can someone explain why there are two chandeliers right before the exit room in E1M1? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Klear Posted August 22, 2023 You can't spell "necromantic" without "romantic". It was a part of the whole demon summoning thing. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
aboyes1989 Posted August 22, 2023 Grey sky on Phobos. That's a new one! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

esselfortium Posted August 22, 2023 Based on the Doom alphas, the sky was originally going to be black with some blue mountains, but I think they decided a solid black void wasn't as impressive a way to show off what their new engine could do. 9 Quote Share this post Link to post
elborbahquarama Posted August 22, 2023 also i really don't think that you're supposed to notice there is vegetation on those rocks, to me it always was all grey (and i'm happy that there is an atmosphere because it makes the first levels less scary) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
spineapple tea Posted August 22, 2023 If the UAC figured out teleportation, they can terraform a moon. Plus in later episodes there's those textures with the vines covering them. If you're calling E1 unrealistic because of some plants then I'm BEGGING you to play the rest of the game. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

I think the alpha one radiates the fact that we are in space better, for a long time i thought that Doom 1 started off on earth in E1M1, probably cause of the skybox, but that might just be me. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

zokum Posted August 22, 2023 Doom is a very abstract game. The environment doesn't make sense, it just looks and plays well. There are numerous examples of buildings in the first episode that are bigger on the inside than the outside. On e1m1 the zig-zag area is much larger when viewed inside than from the outside. Given that we have non-euclidian geometry, the mountain range in the distance is rather uninteresting. To me, impossible architecture makes a lot more 'sense' in hell. The episode 1 stuff is most likely not intentional. It's just been made this way because it looks better. If I'm not mistaken, I have added examples of impossible geometry to the doomwiki for several maps, e1m1, e1m5, e1m7, e4m3 and Doom 2 map06 spring to mind. I am sure many other maps have impossible geometry. Obviously impossible architecture/geometry is one of those things that bug me in user made maps. The most common one I see is 128 tall doors that open up into a ceiling that is only 8 or 16 units thick. Doom 2 map06 has a great example of that exact problem in the outside area with the lava pit. The sky exits are a special case, same with the missing texture exit on Doom 2 map25. Those are intentional. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
