Zilch Posted August 22, 2023 With the release of Sigil 2 only a few months away from its 10 December release date, I started playing the first release again. Honestly it's pretty good, and good fun. Hehe, only at the 3rd level as of this post, but still! To me it really is a very memorable wad, with pretty decent designs. I understand some might not like the ledges and the 'shoot-able eyes' mechanic, but I think overall it really is a worthwhile map. Once again... really looking forward to Sigil 2. This wad should be good, especially considering Romero's had nearly five years! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Redneb27 Posted August 23, 2023 I really enjoyed Sigil 1 too and can't wait for the sequel. I think playing new Romero levels is super fun and neat, even if there are "better" wads out there. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
s4f3s3x Posted August 23, 2023 SIGIL was a masterclass in level design. The amount of polish in its construction and visuals are amazing, OG Doom at its best. What makes it impressive is how modern it feels, being Romero one of the creators of the game it could have gone down as a washed-out "we used to map like this" joint, but nope, came out as fresh as released tomorrow : ) Judging from the mapping stream that Romero did I only hope SIGIL 2 keeps the hellish theme instead of going full tech-base. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Zilch Posted August 23, 2023 https://doomwiki.org/wiki/SIGIL_II Yes I use Wikipedia Doom Wiki as my source ;) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
ChaoticReverie Posted August 23, 2023 SIGIL is well and good but can we talk about Blackroom? Still waiting for that to drop 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gibbitudinous Posted August 25, 2023 I'm honestly really curious to see how Romero's Doom 2 wad is going to turn out (i.e. the wad that One Humanity was made for before it was released early for charity). That was initially being referred to as "SIGIL 2" but that ended up being walked back due to the title instead being attached to Romero's Doom 1 30th anniversary wad. As a result, the Doom 2 (presumably also 30th anniversary) wad is currently unnamed, and who knows what it'll even be called. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
StillWind85 Posted August 25, 2023 Also really looking forward to this release. It's been really cool seeing John Romero mapping for Doom again, and I hope he enjoys making these levels as much as I do playing them. Soundtrack on Sigil was amazing, I hope he gets some equally awesome music for the second. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Peccatum Mihzamiz Posted August 25, 2023 (edited) But Sigil 2 is already out, right? Right......? Edited August 25, 2023 by Peccatum Mihzamiz 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Apprentice Posted September 3, 2023 I'm looking forward to it and although I shouldn't, I have been watching some of his Youtube videos where he makes some of the maps (E6M4 and E6M6) and some aspects of it makes me fearfull (the use of custom textures and another Cyberdemon maze :/) . . . 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Maximum Matt Posted September 4, 2023 Is he only doing another episode? I see in his videos his maps still have the ExMx format, is it gonna be another Doom I episode? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

The megawad(?) for Doom 2 is a separate project. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zilch Posted September 4, 2023 In one of his recent streams (E6M6 I think) he mentioned Sigil 3 might be a Doom II release. Not sure when that'll happen though. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheMightyWhoosh Posted September 4, 2023 Watching Romero mapping for Sigil is really therapeutic. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Knor964 Posted September 4, 2023 I can't wait either! John Romero really made amazing maps with Sigil and he still is a huge inspiration for me 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
TasAcri Posted September 4, 2023 Can't say i'm as excited. Level design might be good but it's still a DOOM I episode again. So no SSG and fewer types of monsters. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I have a lot of respect for him, I really enjoyed sigil, and I'm really glad he's making more. But watching him map drives me up the wall. I thought I'm patient but... well he's certainly not in a hurry to get anything done. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Jayextee Posted September 4, 2023 Actually I think Romero's mapping streams; and this includes the sedate pace at which he creates them; are a seriously welcome breath of fresh air. As a mapper myself, I often find that I'm comparing myself to this nebulous 'ideal' of what I should be mapping like -- I also create pretty slowly, and perhaps there are things that I do that aren't best-practices or whatever? At least, that's what I thought before watching Romero; a professional, and actually a literal legend in his field; create DOOM maps. He seems kinda chaotic in comparison to myself, his approach to any given area appearing slapdash and slipshod if I'm being cynical about it all. But that doesn't matter one iota, as the man gets the job done (and well, I've enjoyed every nu-Romero map I've played) at his own pace and in his own style. It's inspiring as hell and I'm here for it; totally grateful this is available for us mere peons to see. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
boris Posted September 4, 2023 It slightly triggers me how inefficiently he uses UDB :D Selecting map elements one by one, going through the editing dialogs to assign textures, going through editing dialogs to set upper/lower unpegged etc. Can't blame him for just not knowing the ins and outs of the program, of course. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

CasualScrub Posted September 4, 2023 It's just cool to me that John is still so involved with classic Doom. Like what other dev would still be doing things like this for the original games they worked on? 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gibbitudinous Posted September 4, 2023 Y'know it never seriously occurred to me that the Doom 2 wad might just be called SIGIL 3. Makes as much sense as anything else with how it was evidently going to be SIGIL 2 at first. SIGIL III: DOOM Too? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gougaru Posted September 5, 2023 Just really hoping it also has co op monster placement like sigil. Had an amazing and insane time with that 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
xScavengerWolfx Posted September 5, 2023 Ok i will be honest about this since i keep seeing people crying about it. I am glade it's for Ultimate Doom and not Doom 2, i will tell you why. To me since i'm doing a Ultimate Doom Mega Wad solo i have a much more love to using the single shotgun then the over powered SSG, i like the limited enemies and pick ups as well. I love the first Sigil he did and i want to make a map that takes inspiration form it and everything. What i don't like seeing or reading is "ugh! It's not for doom 2, lame" or "God he should've done it in Doom 2 because of the Super Shotty". Y'all been spoiled too much with the SSG and the Megasphere, i don't get why everyone is throwing a fit over it being in Doom 1 then in Doom 2. Can't you all just accept the fact that he's making it for Ultimate Doom because it likes his child and he is showing love for the community as a whole. Another words: Stop crying about it not being in Doom 2 and get over it, it's John fucking Romero for Satan sakes man. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
QuaketallicA Posted September 5, 2023 I had no idea a Sigil 2 was in the works. I randomly searched up "John Romero" on youtube today, and lo and behold he's streaming himself mapping the new episode. I'm ecstatic to see the followup. Sigil was a great wad! Plus, Romero is a great DJ too. Great music taste. Worth watching the stream just for the "radio." 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Jayextee Posted September 5, 2023 I don't know why people would cry about SIGIL 2 being for the Ultimate DOOM anyway, since DOOM II already gets the lion's share of user content; and daddy Romero is making a DOOM II set as well, so... 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
