DooM 64 cut weapons sprite restoration (for real, no joke)

Recommended Posts

I found an old screenshot from an old magazine that was cut out and put on the DooM wiki so I decided to clean it up and give the doom 64 flamethrower the love it deserves2121122873_latest_cb20200512211759(3)(3)(3)(2)(6).png.892f87a4eb4aa4d7cc0d63c5353341c5.png835747063_latest_cb20200512211759(3)(3)(3)(2)(5).png.d54c3f47fa93de409153d48f6849f79b.png

It wasn't a flamethrower, it was an early design for the rocket launcher which proved to be too detailed so Midway redesigned it to be closer to the PC variant while still looking fresh.  Besides, YukiHerz already recreated the sprite which looks even better:

Wrong again! It was an early version of the Unmaker. The "early rocket design" theory came from Tim Heydelaar when asked on the spot about this design. If you read the thread his memory of it is quite hazy, and so while I don't doubt that the rocket launcher went through a similar redesign process, the leaked Doom 64 beta build confirmed that this was indeed the Unmaker:

Meh, in the end it was a cut design which made everyone question what it was supposed to be.  I still believe it could have been an early Rocket Launcher since the shape looks more like it could launch rockets rather than lasers.

That link has proof that it was the Unmaker though. Granted I also thought it was an early Rocket Launcher designer until just now, though the tank attached to it always seemed suspicious to me.

I know, but you can't blame me for having a gut belief that it originally was meant for the Rocket Launcher before the beta build. Remember stuff like this gets changed around a lot during development, so Tim's claim that it was an "early rocket design" isn't that farfetched and might have been true at one point.  But at least we all know it definitely wasn't a flamethrower as OP stated (though that would have been kind of cool in Doom 64).

Oh yeah no, I always thought it was the rocket launcher too. Apparently the rocket launcher seen in the D64 prototype also has a similar design so it's possible that's why he got them mixed up?

Wish the prototype was fully documented. The Cutting Room Floor page is just a stub, hell it still refers to it as a "leak" when as far as we know this doesn't come from a leak. Someone (I think it was @Immorpher) did record videos of all of the levels but it would be nice to get a list of all differences in text form.

So in the alpha version of Doom 64, the rocket launcher sprite is pretty much like the final version. But we know there's a pre-alpha Doom 64 made, and perhaps still around, with content that was even cut from the alpha!

Here's the videos of the alpha Doom 64: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB0oWkFBPhdoXaW9XpF_Ll5nHWuDsyVzs

There is a pre-alpha build of Doom 64 floating around that is missing the .WAD data - I don't have it but apparently it's from one of the Nintendo leaks (maybe even the Gigaleak itself). I've been wishing for someone to take a closer look at it even if we can't really see how the game was at that time due to it only being the executable (but the Doom 2 prototypes we have are like that too and they're at least documented.)

The Gigaleak contained no early assets from third-party games. The"dm64" folder purported to have contained confidential D64 assets turned out to belong to Dr. Mario 64.

I know exactly what you're talking about (including that one hilarious tweet) but this is something different:

I may have been mistaken about it being from a Nintendo leak, sorry :(

It's okay, we've been there lol. But yeah, I'm still curious about the MK Trilogy source code leak.

The truth is not too much mystery in that version of the ROM, it is a conversion of PSX Doom to the pre-Alpha 64Doom (Doom 64) I would say.
It does not have the programmed sound, although the functions exist, they are emptied without code.
The names of the frames of the sprites correspond to PSXDoom.
That does have the functions of Cloud skies, but it does not have MACROS programmed.
