Tantrums when playing Doom

Original DOOM is one of a few games which never caused them for me personally.

It's not some poorly-designed shooter with overpowered or insanely fast opponents out-of-the-box, which could rape you in milliseconds.

It also doesn't have situations where you could screw things up, ending up in a very tight situation where it's more reasonable to restart the entire level.

Perhaps some people just like to challenge themselves, deliberately playing challenging maps (due to poor design, or delibirately designed to make the player suffer)? If that person is a streamer, usually said tantrums are what some people watch their streams for.

what till you play GO 2 IT.

No thanks, I currently have a freedom of choice towards fun and fascination, not suffering and swears.

I also suck at strategic planning, yes.

Not for me, I guess?

// that's my appeal and hatred for Apex legends (S4-12)... got me playing not so much as a rat, but as a fringe lord... always going the least predictable route and being a Charlie Kelly "Wild Card"... They cant' predict my next move when I don't even know what it's going to be...

tbh i keep failing trying to type idclip

either i get it in the wrong order like

ie

idclip

idclip

dilip

dcip

idclip

ildpc

idclpi

This is why in GZDoom, Woof and DSDA, I bound noclipping to a single key that I can tap to get out of a pit or softlock

but the worst that happens even in those cases is me walking away from the computer and banging my head against a wall a few times. It's about the healthiest way I can think of to vent those frustrations in that the harm done is minimal. I've certainly never broken anything. Frustration is a completely normal feeling - it's the way you handle it that makes the difference in whether it's something to be concerned about or not.

That's why they invented swears - I just loudly yell "FUCK!" and quit out of the game before I can get sucked into it

A good way to prevent damaging actually important things like gear, walls, or your hands/feet is to have a set of basic #2 pencils nearby

That's how I normally deal with it anyway :P A couple of loud swears, perhaps slamming the armrest of my chair - no harm done - or if I'm really angry, manhandle a pillow or a pair of sweatpants against my couch. But on rare occasion this sort of loss of control occurs. Happened once with Dark Souls (there's a dent on my living room table forever reminding me of it) and it happened with Candlecove. I guess a person and their coping mechanisms never perfect themselves, ugh...

I wonder if this is common, or should I be worried.

No you should be worried. I know from experience, that this can easily be linked to a deeper level of stress and frustration in life, surely other stuff mentally-related as well. You wanna play a videogame and chill and sometimes it doesn't go the way we expect, alright that happens to everyone, and responding with violence is not a good sign to your own health, and it ends up costing money. Gotta figure where all that comes from and work out some solution within your possibilities, if you really don't ever want to react similarly or worst...

I suppose you're right :/ And I do kinda know there might be issues on stress-related side that's completely unrelated to Doom, and that one incident, no matter how isolated it may have appeared, connects to many other things, conscious or not.

Same here, in the end I had to give up playing OpenArena (one of the few FPS games I played), the game would always trigger something in me which I never learnt to control.

So yeah, sometimes the only solution is to give it up completely, like how alcoholics need to abstain from alcohol completely otherwise they "fall off the wagon".

Everything within arm's reach costs too much to break out of frustration, if I'm pissed off now I'd be more pissed off having to repair/buy new components.

That's the vicious circle. I don't mind my laptop, it's been a disappointment since I bought it, but while my keyboard and mouse still work almost perfectly, sensing the damage saddens me each time :(

I used to be HORRENDOUS at dealing with tilt and would do my fair share of raging when losing in far more competitive multiplayer games like CS, WOW(PVP) and......ughhh..HEARTHSTONE. Several broken mice, space key no longer functioning..... it was obviously an issue.

But I've got a lot better at managing it in the last couple years(probably mellowed out as I approach the latter half of my 30s....and I don't live by myself anymore ). Dying in Doom just doesn't get my blood boiling like my connection crashing in HS when I'm about to win, or getting ganked in WOW. I think the most salty I get in Doom is if I die unnecessarily(usually involving the rocket launcher), or I die during a level that I really feel I could've one shot.

I don't have a lot of tantrums with DOOM.

After a while you got the feeling if something is hard on purpose or just straight bullshit (even though sometimes these two things meet); so If a level or a trap is badly designed, I quit and delete the file. If it's just a pack beyond my skills, I choose a lower difficulty setting. If that's not enough, I simply stop and leave the WAD for a future session.

And this is how I avoid getting my nerves explode with DOOM.

But I still have quite a number of tantrums and they all happen while playing Quake : )

When I was about 10 years old and losing at Sonic 3D on the Mega Drive I ragequit and punched the console.

It turns out that's how you get to the level select screen! I cheered up a bit after that.

I don't think I've ever had a full-blown tantrum playing Doom, though I have played levels that pissed me off and caused me to spew profanities as if the little pixelated monsters could hear me lol. Most of the time I just disengage if I'm getting upset at what in playing because it's not worth getting super cranky over.

So maybe the next time those aracnorbs start fucking with you and calling you names, just esc+q+y and come back later when you're in a better headspace. Certainly do not destroy your expensive equipment over it!

i've smashed out of frustration a few things in my life but Doom's ever only got me to some limp throws of the mouse, burying my face in my hands and a few shouted fucks.  Doesn't happen in harder maps as much as in maps i should be doing ok with except it's just a bad day... mostly.

It's funny, I was just finishing Oops! All Techbase tonight and I was wondering to myself "where's the line drawn between challenging and just bad design - and more importantly what's an appropriate reaction?" Gotta say, I'm glad to see a thread where people justify rage-cheating. In a vacuum, I keep thinking people are gonna shout "SKILL ISSUE" at me because I can't do Scythe Map30 without saving or something.

Anyway... for me, I can't say I've ever broken anything when I game. But I definitely do end up in situations where I'm saying "oh for fuck's sake!" as I mash quickload for the tenth time that minute. The longer a session goes on and the more I end up savescumming, the more I lose patience and eventually go "screw it, I'm godmoding this room, I don't care anymore." It's why I tend to only play one or two maps at a time.

I will also shamelessly admit to having keybinds for godmode, noclip, fly, notarget, and kill monsters in G/ZDoom (though partially this is because they're as useful for testing one's own maps as they are for ragecheating).
