Why no Doom vanilla green key?

I'm sure this has been done many times before, but here's some green and purple cards. There's not really enough purple colours in the palette, so it's

a little off.

Its actually magenta, not purple :p Does look good though! Now we just need the cyan and white keys, with matching skulls :D

I was playing Tresspasser, and this game has just EVERY possible key color: red, black, green, white, yellow, and more and more. It just confuses and frustrates, especially knowing slow character and large locations.

Wolf 3d also was supposed to have 4 keys, not 2, but at one moment id realised that it just would be too much. And you know: even with 2 keys Wolf 3d has frustrating mazes.

Here's a preview of the assets from my next wad, which uses the infrared, ultraviolet, and clear keys:

Don't they look cool? Good luck finding the doors though.

Can you only see them with Lite Amplification Goggles?

Just a hunch here:

Id had 4 keys for Catacomb 3D. Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green. Wolfenstein 3D has 4 locked doors programmed into the game, but only 2 key objects are included in the final game (you can still use the other 2 locked doors but without code changes, they can only be opened by enemy AI). The keys are silver and gold, but they really look more like blue and yellow due to the color palette used, and if early prototype HUD artwork is anything to go by the unused keys would have also been red and green. So, if Doom had a fourth key, we can assume that Id would’ve chosen the color green.

Yellow stands much more out than green, I think it was a good choice if you only use 3 keys. The orange skull keys I have more issues with since its color leans more towards red and makes it less visually distinct. Anyone tried a bright yellow skull key yet and did that look good?

If we're making a Prince-themed wad, shouldn't the keys look more like this?

Make that spin and we've got another key for Heretic. :D

Think about it: red can be distilled from demon blood; blue can be distilled from, uh, carpet. But to get ample amounts of green, that requires nukage, and since nukage is damaging it needs to be processed unlike the other substances, which alters its color somewhat. (edit: into yellow! if that's not clear)

You could easily make a green key by melting down balls. It's already well known that the blue keys are made from blue balls (Plasma Pooter) so green keys could be produced by harnessing the energy of the big green balls from the Ball Farting Gun. The red keys are made from the Unmaker's laser pee-stream, so use the Unmaker on blue balls to melt them down and turn them yellow. A teal key can be made by smashing blue and green balls together. I learned this from a dungeon in Zelda.

I think all the points here are valid and very very interesting. I think the members here have answered the question better than the game's creators ever did.

That said, I personally think that the guys at id probably didn't even discuss it that much at the time (the colours of the keys must have been a footnote compared to discussions like which guns to use or skyboxes, for example).

My guess is that they didn't choose green because the game already has a lot of green textures. Whether at the uac base or in hell.

But, yeah, well, you know, that’s just like, uh, my opinion, guys.

On a related note, it always bugged me that Quake II only had Red and Blue keycards, then a Security Pass (that was always associated with yellow). Then I played the Reckoning expansion, which had a Green keycard! ...But still just the Security Pass.

Then I played PSX Quake II at my neighbor's house and there was an actual honest to goodness Yellow keycard

The 2001 megawad Fragport has orange keys which I thought was kind of neat. I think the classic 3 key formula works well enough though.
