IronEagle Competition 58: Enslavement (September only)

Recommended Posts

Welcome to another installment of the IronEagle competition, the ironman challenge that welcomes everyone, regardless of whether you keep dying to the first zombieman or you like to fight cyberdemons blind-folded. As long as you enjoy playing Doom, you're welcome here!

One note before I start describing the selection: we're back to the IronEagle lasting for 1 month, so IronEagle 58 will close at the end of September. Sorry, but the two 6-week IronEagles were due to unusual circumstances.

Participants will challenge themselves against Enslavement, a vanilla-compatible 11-map set for Doom 2, created by Kurt Emch in 1997. This mapset follows you as you struggle to defeat the forces of Hell and destroy the new slavemaster. Several of the monsters have been replaced and there is a new weapon.

Participants must play these maps on complevel 2 or Doom(strict).

Download Enslavement here. There are 2 separate wad files and a DeHacked file. All three must be loaded to add the new graphics, enemies, sounds, and the new weapon.

Enslavement starts at Map 01. Survival is finishing Map 11. There are no secrets maps.

Enjoy!

Congratulations to this month's winners (further details are in the post below).

UV: @joe-ilya (Runner-up: @Anima Zero)

HMP: @LadyMistDragon (Runner-up: @head_cannon)

HNTR: Pegleg (Runner-up: @Andromeda)

Information about a run-ending soft-lock (spoilered sequentially to avoid you learning more than you might want to know):

Map 05

Spoiler

In the flesh room with the blood pool, hanging bodies, and hanging candelabras, there is a switch on the other side of blood pool. You reach it by crossing a bridge, which comes up when you step on to it. The bridge also comes up anytime you cross one of the boundaries of the blood pool. This means if you drop in from the side, the bridge comes up. If you are running around the edges of the blood pool and cross the boundaries without dropping in, the bridge comes up. It can raise twice, once to a floor height of 0 and again to a height of 32. If you raise it once and then step on to it (when it's at 0) it will raise to 32 and you will be stuck on the other side, unable to get back on the bridge.

Spoiler

There are two such rooms and they function identically.

It is possible to press the switches if you accidentally trigger the bridge once. See below.

Spoiler

If you accidentally trigger the bridge to raise to 0 before you step on it, you can go to the flesh walls around the switch platform and press them. They will lower and you can ride them up to the switch platform. Make sure you press the switch, though, because if you walk back down the bridge and step off it, the bridge will go up and you will be unable to exit if you did go back to the switch via the flesh walls route described above.

Map 07

Spoiler

There is a switch that, when pressed, will raise a step by 24 units. This switch can be activated repeatedly and doing so will make another switch impossible to reach, meaning that you can't progress.

Spoiler

The switch you can press repeatedly is surrounded by skulls on pikes.

Spoiler

Maybe you try rocket jumping across the gap to the yellow key. Maybe it's possible. Freelook is allowed, so, in theory, rocket jumping is OK, but I can't guarantee you would be successful. It's a long jump.

      • it is possible you may have to use +set skill <x> for GZDoom

  • <x> must be replaced by the skill level. 2 = HNTR, 3 = HMP, 4 = UV
  • <IEenslave> would be replaced with whatever you decide to call your demo, if you're submitting a demo

Rules:

The rules are basically the same as they have been. Either demos or streams are permissible. If you are creating a demo, post the demo. If you are streaming, post a video of the stream. Even if streaming, you can still submit a demo, if you want to.

The basic rule is that you submit a demo/stream played at a particular difficulty level (HNTR, HMP, or UV) and you play without saving and reloading, ending your run when you die (or survive).

The following are allowed (but not required):

  • Freelook
  • Crosshair
  • Mods that are COSMETIC ONLY

The following are NOT allowed:

  • Crouching
  • Jumping
  • Mods that change ANY aspect of base gameplay, including (but not limited to) enemy behavior, enemy speed, player abilities, player speed, weapon damage, ammo, and enemy drops.

Further, more specific, rules are listed below:

Spoiler

  • Submissions (except for streams, as described below) must include a demo.
    • You may practice a mapset if you want, but these practice runs should not be submitted as your official entry, and your run would be Category 2, unless there are exceptional circumstances (such as described below).
  • A run must be done in a singular sitting with no saves. (With room for breaks. This will be addressed below.)
  • Streams and video runs are accepted provided you post a video of the stream/run or a link to the video.
    • If you post a video of the stream, you may post a demo if you want, but it is not mandatory. You may also post a demo if you, for some reason, do not want to post the video or a link.
  • Secret levels, if present, do not have to be completed for a survival run. If they are completed, they are extra credit.

Any port is accepted provided it will actually run the mapset. There is no preference.

Spoiler

Of course, if you want to try a limit-removing/Boom map in Chocolate Doom, be my guest. However, be aware that your run may be over rather quickly. Don't say you weren't warned.

Category System:

  • Category 1: Blind run.
    • This explains itself. You have no knowledge of the wad and have not played/seen it before. I'm willing to be somewhat lenient with this Category.
      • For example, if you die early in Map 01, and then decide to play again for your run, you can still call it Category 1.
  • Category 2: Non-blind.
    • If you have played the wad before and/or possess significant foreknowledge, your run is non-blind. Basically, anything that is not Category 1 is Category 2.

If you're unhappy with your blind run, feel free to record a new run, and submit that run instead. (Just don't submit your first run.) If you want to submit your first run, no matter how you perform, by all means, go ahead and do it. You shouldn't feel that you HAVE to submit a run you're dissatisfied with, just to preserve a "Category 1" status. If you want to go back and submit a second run, you're welcome to do so, but, at this time, it won't be counted.

Difficulty System:

You may submit a demo/stream for only one of HNTR, HMP, or UV. Choose only one, because subsequent submissions will be rejected (i.e., if you submit a HMP demo, the HNTR demo you then submit will be rejected). We're not using the 1CC rule set here. Your first submission is what counts.

Only runs from the same difficulty will be pitted against each other. Each difficulty will be graded separately.

Submission:

When you submit your run, please the include the following information:

  • The category (1 or 2)
  • The difficulty
  • If you survived, your time
  • If you didn't survive, the map where you died
  • Time of death
  • Kill count upon death
  • Time upon entering your map of death (if you made it past the first map)
  • The port you used (if you included a demo)
  • A link to the stream/video (if you did a stream)

You may include a commentary about the maps or details about them, if you want to. If you do include specific information about the map (e.g. "The demon trap in Map 08 is rough"), please put it in a spoiler, so that people that want a completely blind experience won't be tipped off. If you're just putting in a general comment (e.g., "Pro tip: don't get hit"), then no need for a spoiler.

Attempting to max the maps is not necessary to win.

Ranking for this mapset will be determined by:

  • Survival
  • Time for survival
  • Map of death (in descending order: Map 11, Map 10, Map 09, Map 08, Map 07, Map 06, Map 05, Map 04, Map 03, Map 02, Map 01)
  • Time it took to reach the map of death
  • Kill count in the map of death

If you die, please wait a few seconds before quitting.

Breaks:

Everyone gets tired. Sometimes people survive longer than they expected. Nature calls. Every now and then, there are family emergencies. Needing to take a break shouldn't necessarily end a promising run. While you should try to complete the run in a single setting, this isn't always possible. If you have to take a break, try to make it quick.

Happy Dooming!

Lemme get this started!

Category 1, UV

Killed myself in map 05 at 32:11:00 (according to crispy-doom)

enslave_IEbygal.zip

Spoiler

... because it was already a death pit anyways, as far as I could tell. You'll see that I looked around before taking the leap of faith, in case you needed to use a switch to reach the other side which I'm sure I missed the clue somewhere, though with how the other bridges worked I can't blame it entirely on myself for taking the risk! Hopefully it'll be only me who fell for that.

From what I played, seemed cute, the sort of mapping that I would imagine the mapper sketching out from pure excitement and novelty - "yess ooh this bridge works omg mapping is fun!!" - I know that feeling. Those custom monsters, I really wanted to laugh at the, uhh, balloons idk, whatever replaced pain elementals, and not gonna lie but the skulls actually did look sick imo (wonder how many folks will first think the projectile is BFG plasma like I did).

I might finnish it another time, I still never revisited that Jim Flynn set from many ironeagles ago.

Spoiler

Another one for the map 5 death pit.

I've played 1997 wads that aged very well, but this was not one of them. My first attempt ended very quickly thanks to the inescapable goodie room trap in map 1, which already soured me on the whole thing, so I just rushed my way through to see how far I'd get.

Category 2 because my first attempt (which died to a random bullshit moment on MAP04) was somehow not recorded. I think I accidentally forgot to put the -record parameter in it. Was super cautious at MAP05 and, well, it worked. Then I got to MAP10 and, uh... WAD just said nope, you die here.

Spoiler

How in the flying fuck does someone NERF the plasma rifle so horribly? It is confidently the worst weapon I ever shot.

Then I got to a cyberdemon and, uh... wielding the plasma rifle, of course!... and gambled with the pain chance. I had no chance there. Really sad, cuz that might have been a good run, even if horribly slow...

Almost DNF'd on MAP05, I have no idea how that bridge lowered. I was SURE I'd softlocked and got the RL out to kill myself.

EDIT: It would help if I submit the demo...

I wasn't sure I soft-locked myself, but I confirmed that I had by checking Map 07 in an editor while the run was still active. As established during a previous IronEagle, checking the map in an editor during your run ends your run at that point. Thus, my run was over at Map 07, whether by the checking it or by rockets to the face. Oh well.

Survived on HMP in 47:09

Category 2:

Funny story, this didn't look very familiar to me initially but after starting the first map and having experienced quite a bit of it, I realized that I remembered a fair bit more than I thought. Even later, I remembered that I'd put it in Doom Wadarchelogy as well! I would've probably started on UV otherwise but to be honest, this is Iron Eagle so it's fine. Although I know Pegleg trolls Er/Iwa sometimes so it wouldn't be too surprising if he picked it up in part from there. Although maybe it's because the author has the same first name as another, more influential mapper. Rather easy wad, with really no difficulty spike until map 10, part of the reason why you see me playing like I am here.

Category 1 run on UV, crushed on map 1 with 16/34 monsters. (starts at about 20:15 into the video)

So yeah, DON'T ignore the arrow on map 1 unless you like being killed by a mean-spirited crusher hovering over some inviting powerups. Thanks 90's mapping, you sure are blind-friendly at times...

DSDA Doom is my port of choice
Died on Map 6. I forgot about a cyberdemon in a closet. Map is long enough that I thought it was a completely separate map when backtracking. My autistic mind analyzes wads in mysterious ways, it's like following an invisible path of progression through anything I play even if it's the first time. I just feel guided through wads and levels. Was an interesting 90s wad.

Posted in the Discord as well for consistency. THIS IS NOT A DOUBLE SUBMISSION.

Although there is nothing wrong with Er/Iwa, and there are some cool maps and mapsets there, that's not where I came across Enslavement. I found it the old-fashioned way: digging through idgames, searching for vanilla, limit-removing, and Boom mapsets with various numbers of maps (the search whole textfile function can be your friend in that case--it's not a perfect tool, but it gets the job the done slowly).

I suppose this would be a UV cat 3, as I played up to the start of map2 and then quit, convinced I'd not loaded the wads correctly.

I then had another crack at it and made it about half way through before catching a rocket

Weird but funny wad with tons of flaws and some really odd looking reskins and a bizarre but comedy plasma gun

Category 1 / UV.

Dead on MAP10 with 16/20 kills.

Finished MAP09 at 1:04:02.

Played on GZDoom 4.10.0.

Means of death / comments:

Spoiler

Max damage roll on a Cyber rocket while trying to duel one with the weird plasma rifle with OP damage and super slow projectiles. I think I just got mesmerized by all those plasma bolts taking a leisurely stroll. Possibly getting shot at from a second cyber at the time, not sure.

WAD is a bit too 90s for my taste. Feels like a concept WAD that has each map explained in a .txt file because it doesn't really showcase the concept well through map geometry. Plasma rifle replacement is pretty cool though.

Softlocked on MAP01 with 24 kills.

Spoiler

Yes, the ludicrous pile of loot was obviously a trap, but I thought I'd exhausted all other courses of action. How bizarre that they built a fake corridor behind the trap just to make the closing doors look cooler. I would have laughed if the killbox had done its job properly, but there's no joy in getting softlocked.

I can't squeeze a demo out this moment and accidentally played the NM-Lite ironman over this even though it has a few days left for it.  But uhh, to keep up my participation streak:

That's unfortunate, but completely understandable. Hopefully, we'll see you back for the October IronEagle.

Again, I really liked your demo link. So, at least, if you had to bow out, at least you did it with panache.
