The thread is very entertaining to read with this song in the background. Also, this is one of the few rare times I've seen a consistently trending Everything Else forum (aside from React to Profile Pic Above You and the like) that hasn't been locked despite going for 2 days. Wonderful.

Might as well tell this story now, as it will be the only time it is relevant.

 

Back in my Skype days, in one of the brony groups I was a part of, I joined a call. The people on it were crying their eyes out. One of their friends, a brony Youtuber, was killed by a drunk driver. A video on his channel explained the situation. That whole morning was filled with people grieving. Once afternoon hit, we found out the story wasn't real. The person was alive and well. The video on their channel was for a school project, one which they posted without giving context.

 

I have other experiences in those groups, but that particular one stands out in my mind.

After spending some time away from dw, maturing myself and advancing my social views, it's sad to see a thread like this so soon after coming back that's just filled with bigotry in the same vein as that which middle-aged cis white men would use to hate on gender queer people. Just because something can have a sexual element to it doesn't mean others need to fetishize it and turn everybody that it applies to into sexual deviants. Reminds me that the weirdness to ilya some years ago (hope he's okay these days...) was not purely ilya bringing negative attention on himself but also that people just like having others to hate on.

 

It's ok to be unfamiliar with stuff, it's human nature to make assumptions on new stimuli as we try to fit them into our old categories, but it's also not hard to catch oneself going down the hateful road and to stop and reexamine one's own feelings. 

 

The only reason ponies were banned from dw is because people can't stop themselves from being hateful and it's easier to silence a small number of already marginalized people than it is to control a bunch of entitled, cis white men.

 

We can be better than this.

Well, that's not the only reason, or even the main reason. The main reason is that most of them were just 4chan/SA trolls, who technically fit into both categories, thus becoming popular targets of hatedom from all sides.

Nah I think it's because the ponies got annoying so mod decided to ban them. Just a guess.

 

Also, I think it's unfair to actual marginalized people to start calling people marginalized just because they like a TV show other people don't like.

I've even seen people say that it's wrong for adults to like Disney animated movies except if it's because they're taking their children to see it or something like that. So it doesn't surprise me that liking the ponies is seen as even more wrong.
