Jimmy Posted September 12, 2023 (edited) STREAM/PURCHASE ON BANDCAMP STREAM/PURCHASE INSTRUMENTALS ON BANDCAMP LISTEN TO "ABYSS OF TIME" ON SPOTIFY LISTEN TO "ABYSS OF TIME INSTRUMENTALS" ON SPOTIFY A grand total of 17 new heavy metal tracks intended to provoke thought about the world we live in, ranging from the individual perspective to that of the cosmic. This album on the whole covers many current affairs, chiefly political, but centres primarily on the need for immediate and decisive action being taken in order to tackle our most pressing issues (many of which our politicians turn a blind eye to – hence the album cover), both as a society and as a species – for we are a tiny speck on the scale of time, and should try to go to lengths to look out for ourselves and for our planet, while we still last. The introductory track "Epiphany" sets the stage by giving background via spoken word on the discovery of the geological unconformity at Siccar Point in 1788 by Scottish scientist James Hutton, which gave rise to the idea of "deep time" and that the Earth was in fact billions of years old, challenging widely-held beliefs that our planet's age was a little over six thousand years. Scottish songwriters Karine Polwart and Dave Milligan's musical piece "Siccar Point" focuses also on the subject of deep time and of our collective finity in the face of time’s great expanse, which are revisited here in my music to bring the album to a close on the title track "Abyss of Time". SINGLES: STREAM/PURCHASE "DESTROYER OF WORLDS"LISTEN TO "DESTROYER OF WORLDS" ON SPOTIFY Quote As told from the perspective of Julius Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer studied philosophy, Greek, French literature, and theoretical physics. He was capable of speaking eight languages, learning Dutch in a mere six weeks. He was born into a family of creators - his mother a painter, his father a textile importer, and he was himself a gifted poet. He graduated from Harvard in three years instead of four, and received a PhD at age 23. In 1942, he was selected to coordinate the Manhattan Project. It is said of Oppenheimer's achievement in creating the atomic bomb that he saved the world by allowing us to destroy it. It's hard to ignore the notion that the sheer world-ending scale of the device's destructive capability has had the effect of stopping the world's greatest military powers from engaging in all-out war with each other, with the idea of mutually assured destruction looming above them. Oppenheimer saw nothing in the way of thanks for his efforts after the fact – the US government suspected him of being a communist spy and ultimately stripped him of his security clearance as their top atomic physicist. Has this most merciless creation of war in actuality been the key to saving uncountable lives and de-escalated the threat of global war? Or has the nuclear arms race resulted in the manufacture of exponentially more threatening, planet-dooming weaponry? The Doomsday Clock showed 7 minutes to midnight at the beginning of the Cold War. Today, we are 100 seconds to midnight. STREAM/PURCHASE "THE PENALTY ft. Marian Paddock"LISTEN TO "THE PENALTY" ON SPOTIFY Quote A commentary on the death penalty, and how humans have throughout history resorted to clumsy, convoluted and inhumane methods of execution to erase people they simply don't agree with. Since-outmoded execution methods like the electric chair, gallows and firing squad are some of the methods referred to in the lyrics herein. The opening sequence of words, spoken by my sibling Marian, is a piece of anti-LGBTQIA+ propaganda, intending to paint the transgender movement as a demonic perversion of our god-given image. The message is subverted here – throughout all of our existence on this planet, we've had a propensity for brutality that is unrivalled in nature, and we have long indulged in "designs of death" to creatively silence or kill people who appear to pose any kind of perceived threat. For a group of people who conform to scriptures and rhetoric which state that "all are created equal" and "love thy neighbour", the highly privileged sure are ready to suggest – and often enact – brutal acts of violence upon anyone who strays from the (albeit vaguely-defined) path of heteronormativity. Inevitably, silencing just one voice will never achieve the desired effect of eliminating an idea (or entire subset of people) that is disagreed with. There are always many others who think or live likewise, and will make sure that they are heard. No one voice is truly alone. Once united, we have the ability to overwhelm and overcome. In this way, despite all the brutality we wage upon each other for little-to-no long-term gain, we eventually become stronger. The opposition will flee behind the walls of anonymity to save their hide, instead of risking life and limb to make an actual societal impact. If we ever feel genuinely threatened, we will resort to strength in numbers, and outsize the vocal minority. For we are many. Album cover! Jimmy Posted November 2, 2023 (edited) With just one day to go before release, here we are with a brand new music video for your viewing pleasure! Can't be happier with how the video turned out - @KeaganDunn knocked it out of the park with this. We recorded all footage remotely and with a budget of basically zero. The video also features @Dragonfly on drums and @Tristan on guitar and bass. The guitars in the track itself were recorded by @Velvetic and @The Final Event, the latter of whom also features on guest harsh vocals. Here's what the song says... Quote Many of us are instructed to keep our darkest problems to ourselves. Airing our grievances makes others uncomfortable, so we should grin and bear and keep on smiling. But pushing down our problems invariably exacerbates them. This tendency of putting band-aids on invisible bullet wounds is sadly seen universally across society. We still have some ways to go in order to undo this deeply damaging mentality, but with perseverance and a hyper-focus on preserving our societal health and happiness, we might get there.
