scalliano Posted September 12, 2023 https://unity.com/runtime-fee Basically, devs have to pay a fee to Unity every time a game is installed. Not purchased, INSTALLED. I'm just away from the BallisticNG Discord there now and they are rightfully PISSED. 9 Quote Share this post Link to post
mrthejoshmon Posted September 12, 2023 (edited) So, what exactly stops me from endlessly reinstalling something just to be a shitbag and cost some poor asshole a shit load of money? I struggle to fathom such genius, this is next level robbery, this is incredible. Fuck you mean $0.20 per install? That's outrageous, also I do not want your dodgy runtime on my system merely for playing a single game thank you very much. D4NUK1 Posted September 12, 2023 This it's why you can kill the CEO of Unity in No More Heroes 3 LOL. This it's just like ghoulish suit man behavior, and for what? To all the Devs go to another stuff... I feel sorry for the Devs it's this goes, like, this is like a sue. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
dasho Posted September 12, 2023 I guess this is a bad time to announce EDGE-Classic Premium 24 Quote Share this post Link to post
RichardDS90 Posted September 12, 2023 This makes no sense, surely at best, a simple one time licence to use it would be best if they did want to charge and not per install. What are they thinking?! While thinking about the Unity port, I do kind of wonder how long until Nightdive Studios put Doom on the KEX engine and completely replace the Unity port. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Biodegradable Posted September 12, 2023 Good lord, this kind of predatory business move would make even Adobe blush. 22 Quote Share this post Link to post
scalliano Posted September 12, 2023 Aside from the spyware issues (inevitable for anything like this to work) there is also the issue that as an end-user I am now actively hurting the developers of a game I own. As for Doom, it was Nerve who did the Unity ports, and even then it's a Bethesda-published game, Microsoft can eat that cost no problem. This is an overt attack against independent game development, and if Unity gets away with it, you can bet your arse other middleware providers will follow suit. 8 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr Masker Posted September 12, 2023 (edited) No idea why they even NEEDED this, Unity already is used on like every game ever so it's not like there's a lack of customers. If anything there WILL be a lack of customers if this goes into effect... (Yes I understand big business likes money) Edited September 12, 2023 by Mr Masker 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nikku4211 Posted September 12, 2023 I've always hated Unity, but this is low even for them. Hopefully Godot stays open-source because holy crap. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
lazygecko Posted September 12, 2023 No surprise coming from a former EA CEO on record calling developers fucking idiots. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Caffeine Freak Posted September 12, 2023 (edited) I'm not exactly the corporate-minded type so I'm sure there's information and reasoning I'm not privy to here, but I genuinely struggle to think of a way to repel more aspiring and current devs from your engine than a scheme like this. (After a quick bit of Googling) I'm still unclear what Riccitiello's thinking or strategy ultimately is here but yeah, some of his recent moves are starting to make a little more sense now. Boss Posted September 13, 2023 Loading a Unity web browser game also counts as an installation. Head to whatever Unity browser game you dislike and mash that F5 button to bankrupt any developer of your choice! This will go well. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr. Freeze Posted September 13, 2023 So now it's easy as hell for the review-bombing brigade to bankrupt studios. Just make an auto-installer and uninstaller. What a joke. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

LadyMistDragon Posted September 13, 2023 ......this is so bad. You've really shot yourselves in the foot with this galaxy-brain move. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
june gloom Posted September 13, 2023 I'm pretty sure what John Riccitiello has been doing with the stocks qualifies as illegal insider trading. He has to know that this move will drive his stock down as companies flee the Unity engine like rats on a sinking ship. 8 Quote Share this post Link to post
Murdoch Posted September 13, 2023 I have heard of shooting yourself in the foot but holy fuck. This is shooting yourself in the foot with an orbital ion cannon. Weapons grade lunacy. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

Chookum Posted September 13, 2023 All the developers I keep my ear to online, high and low are pissed. No polite way of saying otherwise. Very glad I tried out Godot and am having success with it meanwhile, just thought I'd toss that out there. No particular reason... 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

june gloom Posted September 13, 2023 Today is the first I've heard of Godot and to be honest I'm loving the dark joy they must be taking in this. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
URROVA Posted September 13, 2023 Soooo the massive layoffs, the alliance with the malware company, and then this. This is really stupid, how horrible manner to destroy a good engine, reminds me when gamemaker switched from permanent licence to monthly subscription (lots of engine migration), but this is just another level. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

GODOT IS REALLY GOOD, runs in my machine, not like the U-engine. Also GDScript is really great! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
