Johnny Cruelty Posted September 13, 2023 any suggestions? does such a thing exist at all? I'm talkin' maps with huge shit AND takes like 20 mintues to complete 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dreamskull Posted September 13, 2023 (edited) I havent seen any, but I would love to. Im a fan of the premise, but its very hard to build for that with quality in mind. 20 minutes per level is smaller than I would have expected you to be looking for and to frame a 20 min up as "giant" seems odd, but considering that, maybe its actually doable, so heres hoping that something pops up. If it does, Ill be right there with you in the trend to explore them. Edited September 13, 2023 by Dreamskull 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Insaneprophet Posted September 13, 2023 The 2 closest things I can think of are "Lost Civilization" and "Thr Ultimate Doom II" Neither one has quite 32 maps, I think 20 and 26, but both of them contain massive massive levels. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Insaneprophet Posted September 13, 2023 Oh yeah I forgot, "Greenian" and especially "Relyctum" both full 32 lvl megawads with exactly what your looking for, giant maps that take anywhere from a half hour to an hour or more to explore 😃 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

To put it another way the monster density is mostly around the same as the Doom 2 IWAD maps and most of the maps have over three hundred monsters. ISTR after clearing all 32 maps my final intermission time was c. 24 hours 30 minutes. (But I am a slow player, I do not like to miss anything.) 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
MathsDevil Posted September 13, 2023 Back To Saturn X Episode maps are (in)famously large, but the megawads do not have 30 maps. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

LadyMistDragon Posted September 13, 2023 Hellbound has quite a few maps like this but I'm not sure all of them would qualify as 'giant.' 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
FletcherHonoroma Posted September 13, 2023 Kamasutra has a giant ass map 30. 19 Quote Share this post Link to post

TheMagicMushroomMan Posted September 13, 2023 Hellbound. They're not always giant, but they're always (too) big. I like the wad but it's pretty divisive. Everyone agrees it's great visually though. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted September 13, 2023 Maybe Sunder will one day be that, but for now it's not at 30 maps. The scale of its maps is only rivaled by the scale of its development timeline. 10 Quote Share this post Link to post
elborbahquarama Posted September 13, 2023 the yet unfinished voyager by beewen is basically on the same scale as lost civilization but with a much more obscure design and creepy atmosphere, there is 22 finished levels (and any of them could really be a single level wad) and 2 secrets levels so far but it's planned to be a full 32 megawad (though i think most of the remaining levels will be shorter except for at least two of them) http://i.iddqd.ru/viewtopic.php?t=380&page=1 i also played relyctum by the same author but i'm not really a huge fan personally, voyager is one of my favorite wads though 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

galileo31dos01 Posted September 14, 2023 (edited) Relyctum Journey to Hell Urania Armadosia Notice that these are one-man megawads. I don't think there really exists any full megawad with maps that all take over 20 minutes to max, but who knows. At least this list I can make is megawads which, from experience, took no less than a week to finnish with around 2-3 maps per session, sometimes 1 map alone was enough to end up exhausted for the rest of the day. Relyctum and JTH in particular have that effect no matter what, while Urania is just generally speed-unfriendly on a first time and Armadosia embraces backtracking to its core like none else. Crusader No Regret Posted September 16, 2023 When I saw the question my mind went in the direction of "OK, what sets would generate lots of bitching and complaining about too many large maps from the MegaWAD club?" First thing that comes to mind is Community Chest 3. It does have a few more bite-sized maps but tends to trend large. CC2 and CC4 also to differing extents (and the Interstellar Sickness/Shaman's Device duo from CC4 is worth checking out once you're willing to invest the time). Actually community projects in general are the place to look for megawads with lots of large maps and here's why I think so. Quality large maps take more effort to create than small ones so it takes that much more energy for a single creator or two to pack a lot of them in. With a community project, the effort to create 15 or so large maps is spread out among multiple contributers. Making it that much for likely for scope creep to go wild. So if map size is your jam, (and I'm not judging) a community project is most likely to deliver. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Hasamnas Posted September 17, 2023 A.L.T. has some really big, lengthy maps. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I don't think any other project has surpassed its total play time, not counting constant respawns in things like Sunder. For me, for example Urania did surpass it, because of its combination of difficulty with big maps and puzzles. Eternal Doom's maps are big but not that huge, most of them are not bigger than Doom2's Refueling Base, for example, and most (except some of the final stretch from 20 on) are also quite easy combat-wise. It has more difficult puzzles though which will "stretch" playtime of course, above all in maps like 20, 26, 31 and of course 30. Everything depends a bit on what the OP is searching for: playtime or simply size. :) To the Community Chest suggestions I would add the original Community Chest, above all for MAP29 (one of the biggest maps I ever played) but also for example for Use3D's and Sphagne's contributions. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
