What is actually the "essence" of doom?

Looking for an essence is trying to fit the concept perfectly onto the real thing, and it just doesn't work, in my opinion. It's fool's errand.

So what about people trying to "defend" things around that same concept? that is valid or invalid? Because your perspective is actually, the most outside the box way of thinking i saw in this thread.

I think Doom 2016 nailed "Doom" pretty well. It have atmosphere and gritty moments but it's also fast-paced, funny and full of energy. Doom Eternal also did a good job in some points, but it gets a bit goofy at times. Still, I love how colorful it is and reminds me not only the OG game but other early VGA titles like Heretic and Descent.

What I really like about Doom is how the game doesn't take itself seriously. It have that b-movie quality with chainsaws in mars, weird blobs of flesh and monsters that look like strawberries. That's why Doom 3 looks a bit off in comparison, imo.

Is Goku going to explain me the essence of Doom in Spanish now?

Now we're really deep in the lore.

Emmm most of that is related to what the community has done, and that has nothing to do with the franchise in reality. I should had specified that in the main post.

Besides the point, all you said is really good, but remember, that's what came from here, the community, not the doom franchise itself.

For many of the people here, what makes Doom the game it is now is precisely what the community has done with it.

If Doom had not been such an easily-moddable game, it's quite unlikely it would still be talked all that much nowadays. The 59 "vanilla id" levels (27 from Doom + 32 from Doom II) alone would not have been able to stay relevant and fresh for 30 years. Heck we wouldn't have had the Master Levels, Ultimate Doom, and Final Doom if not for the Doom modding community back then.

Yes, but that goes farther beyond than the topic being talked about. Not to suggest fan content can't influence an entire franchise, but in this case is so stretched to what makes "doom" doom that it can be talked about separately.

I know about Dragon Ball AF (ment to be called "after future" but I'd rather call it "all fake"), my cousins were all over that shit then and always claimed they saw the actual series which only happened to be aired at their place, yeah right.. They were just trying to make me jealous with all kind of made up stories of fights and events, that I began to think about it aswell. There was however an AF manga which created all these rumors of a post GT series.

Anyway, sorry for the offtopic.

The creator of the Spirit Killer or ssj5 is one of the biggest lolcows in the Dragon Ball community for stupid things he said.

By all means, defend the concept all you like. Just keep in mind it is a concept.

You are basically describing a Quake game, especially Quake 2. And that's the thing, Quake basically became a slightly more generic version of Doom, with satanic stuff being replaced by basically space nazis. That's why Doom 3 went so hard with horror to make it different from Quake series only to Doom 2016 be much more like Quake again. And that is why Doom is essentially just Quake with Hell and demons.

To me, it's simply the consistent portrayal of the war that wages between an ancient foe and an ancient army, against a race that is heavily advanced in terms of technology. Yet, the ancient forces simply make short work of these technologically advanced armies, leading to the fate of humanity simply being put over a single person's shoulder. That's what I think DOOM's essence is, at least it is to me. It's unique in terms because before DOOM came out, a majority of the media portrayed the demonic forces often within primitive or medieval environments (i.e, the Evil Dead trilogy), and within the science fiction, it was often yet another technologically advanced force, more advanced than ours to put our race's fate at danger, leaving it on just one person to overcome the danger and save the humanity. DOOM's unique in terms that it turns the tables on us; now we're more advanced than the demons, yet we fall victim to their wraith almost immediately. To me, it is what defines DOOM.

I personally, couldn't find any sort of essence between the games themselves; their graphics, their music, their mechanics, etc. Each of the game's iteration, while having the same basic outline, plays different. The original two put a heavy emphasis over exploration. 3 promotes much more linearity and is story driven. The recent additions feel more like playing arcade games, or more accurately, a Serious Sam game. Given that these titles span over 3 different decades of varying advancements in computers, their appearances and their feel is much more different, which makes it rather hard to find essence, at least for me within their appearance and their mechanics.

TL;DR - DOOM's essence basically is; tiny green man ruins whatever weekend plans Hell had.

Whats up with the DBZ? How does that factor into Doom?

"essence" is a shit joke on the dbz community related to the author of dragon ball AF, related to how in his mind "dragon ball was all about violence and gore".

What is the essence of Akira Toriyama?

What is the essence of Anime?

What is the esssence of Japan?

Ask that one guy these questions.

No, dont answer any of these in this thread please. I already have answers.

Im just curious what that one guy thinks about this since he thinks that.

It should be interesting since I agree with him about Dragon Ball Super.

I went to see someone last night who happens to be very knowledgeable about this topic. He's known in the neighbourhood as "Goku"

because the story go's that he blasted someone so hard one day it felt like a Kamehameha blast. Since then all his homies started calling him Goku.

So I went to this guy right, and then I asked him what the essence of Doom was because he used to play alot of Doom in the past. Blasting people in Deathmatch like firing Kamehameha's left and right.

He answered my question in Spanish while grabbing something inbetween his legs: "la esencia siempre ha estado en tus pelotas"

His homies who were standing next to him then asked me: "Any other questions, homie? He's kinda busy right now, ya feel?"

I just said: Muchos gracias Señor and went the fuck outta there asap.
