Best Megawad of Each Decade

Recommended Posts

90s: Requiem, Perdition's Gate, Plutonia

00s: Alien Vendetta, Scythe 2

10s: Going Down, Epic II, Avactor (12 maps but they're so big it should count IMO)

20s: Faithless, UDINO (pretty sure it will get a release this decade!)

I'm sure there's stuff that I haven't played that would also be up for consideration.

A bit surprised to see several mentions for Icarus already, that one really didn't land with me.

90s: icarus or overboard

Do you mean this overboard which was released just last year? Or something else?

90s:

  1. Doom 64 - I know it's basically its own game, but the level design of Doom 64 might be the strongest in the series.
  2. Plutonia - Maybe it's just that I'm spoiled by the mapping standards that came about in the 2000s, but Plutonia holds up incredibly well.
  3. Icarus: Alien Vanguard - Lots of fun locales that try to make Doom levels feel more like real places (I'm certain there was probably some influence from Duke 3D in that regard).

2000s:

  1. Alien Vendetta - The quintessential Doom WAD.
  2. Scythe II - The other quintessential Doom WAD.
  3. Plutonia 2 - It's more Plutonia. I think that explains itself.

2010s:

  1. Back to Saturn X - A unique series from Doomworld's best. Fantastic use of music in episode 1 and unique themes in episode 2.
  2. Doom Zero - Honestly feels like an official WAD in the same vein as No Rest for the Living
  3. Ancient Aliens - One of the most visually distinct aesthetics in a WAD I've played.

2020s (so far):

  1. Knee-Deep in Knee-Deep in ZDoom - A true testament to the things you can do within vanilla Doom's limitations.
  2. Bourgeois Deathmatch - Bite-sized levels that also make for fantastic deathmatch sessions.
  3. Rowdy Rudy II - The best custom weapons and enemies that DeHackEd can offer.

As far as full 32+ map replacements go:

90's: Requiem or Hell Revealed (I never played Eternal Doom, Strain or Icarus)

2000's: Alien Vendetta or Scythe (didn't play the second Scythe or Kama Sutra)

2010's: Ancient Aliens or Valiant (never played Eviternity, Speed of Doom, Going Down, Sunlust or Epic 2)

2020's: So far it's Doom 2 in Spain Only, but I'm looking forward to beating 2022ADO

Edit: I just wanted to mention that I don't take IWADs into account here.

the 90s.....probably Demonfear, even if I view Requiem as refined in certain ways, although it's still filled with 90isms and buggy due to the rushed cycke

2000s is Scythe II

2010s is Sunlust

2020s.....it's a little soon to tell. Outside of Junkfood....Haste, Nostalgia, and 180 Minutes Pour Vivre are each strong contenders for different reasons.

90s: excuse me, do you have time to talk about our lord and savior, memento mori 2?

00s: it's a toss-up between alien vendetta, scythe 2, and plutonia 2 for me. they're all so good

10s: going down

20s: i haven't actually played that many megawads from this decade, mostly just shorter stuff...zone 400 and d2iso were pretty great tho

Based on what I played:

1990's : Eternal Doom

2000's : Alien Vendetta

2010's : Epic 2

2020's : ... I guess Overboard for now?

Pleasantly surprised to see Icarus cited by many, that would be my second choice as well.
