Halfblind Posted September 25, 2023 (edited) I've been watching videos from the Virtual Gaming Library YouTube channel of every game released for every popular classic American released console. I've watched the NES, SNES, GB(C), GBA, NDS, N64, GameCube and Wii for the Nintendo. I've watched the Master System, Genesis, Saturn and I am finishing up the Dreamcast for SEGA. I've watched the PS1, PSP and PS2 videos for the PlayStation. I will be starting my final video for the original Xbox soon. Because I only watched an hour or two a day this project took over 3 months. During that time, I have come to the conclusion that most games did not age well. There have been a crap ton of hidden gems that I did not know existed and there are still a large number of games that did age really well. But for most games, they are almost unbearable today. That brings me to the PC. With the help of source ports and mods id engine games aged gracefully and are timeless. Games like classic Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast, and Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy are still timeless. Games like Heretic 2, Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force, Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2 and American McGees Alice though look okay today still need some tender loving care though. For the most part, however, id engine games have stood well through the test of time. With mods and source ports you can run them on any modern computer without much hassle and still enjoy them today. Thank you, id, for making a series of timeless engines for the PC. I believe that everyone here at Doomworld would agree. Edited September 25, 2023 by Halfblind 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Chesspionage Posted September 25, 2023 (edited) I admire your dedication, that's a lot of YouTube time! Wholeheartedly agree about the id games though. :-) Edited September 25, 2023 by ColonelDuff 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lila Feuer Posted September 25, 2023 The fact that FPS in the first decade set such a high bar before becoming commonplace in the last two is testament to the love and craftsmanship put into not just id games, but BUILD engine and early Unreal as well. Truly timeless era that will never become obsolete. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
