wuunds Posted September 26, 2023 What I mean by this is like aesthetics in a level, a theme around it. Off of the top of my head I can think of examples like Techbases, Hell, Congo (like Plutonia, I don't know if Plutonia has named theme), City, etc, etc. I personally really like the Congo theme. I've played so many Techbases and Hell levels that seeing a level centered around Plutonia's textures and architecture just rules. What's your favorite? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
RHhe82 Posted September 26, 2023 I like many themes, but off the top of my hat, I really like Scythe 2’s jungle theme. It resembles the Congo theme, but is greener and the browns are lighter, the sky is red, and vines are growing everywhere, liquids are lava. Love it. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
openroadracer Posted September 26, 2023 Eviternity has snow maps. I don't think I need to elaborate. If I could get a DooM .WAD that featured DieselPunk techbases in an arctic setting, I'd pretty much be in heaven. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
volleyvalley Posted September 26, 2023 My favorite Doom level theme has to be the Egyptian theme. Alien Vendetta, Scythe II and Epic II have all tinkered with the theme at some point in time, which has resulted in some very pleasing and beautiful Doom vistas. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Drum Posted September 26, 2023 I like Golden Souls 2's theme. It's just like Mario 64! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
xScavengerWolfx Posted September 26, 2023 Dark and Mysterious theme maps. I love the feeling of being alone in a dark and mysterious place that's run down and getting stalked my monsters in a doom map. Wish there was more wads like that 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

DoomGappy Posted September 28, 2023 (edited) Definitely marble and blood. Its an aesthetic that I dig too much. I love the gray and green of the original doom marbles and the way the red blood contrasts with them. I love how the marble feels royal and the blood feels hellish and sacrificial. I also am a big fan of wood and metal, and I want to make a map only using wood5. On the other hand, my least favorite theme is tech base, and I suck at designing them. Edit: My favorite marble map is Dead Temple from the 1994 Tune Up Project. Edited September 28, 2023 by jo2ukegappy 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Sesamia Posted September 28, 2023 I really like tech & hell mixed together. I also love caves and caves with hell and/or tech mixed in. I've never had much love for pure tech bases, but during this past year I've been warming up to them a bit. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

RonLivingston Posted September 28, 2023 themes from fragport, scythe 2, and TNT are my personal favorite. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DeafPixel Posted September 28, 2023 I like red cave hell, and "grey textures and some random bright colour" 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Matt Mello Posted September 28, 2023 Gothic themes above all else. Eviternity and Scythe II's first acts are the prime examples of that. Egyptian maps are great too, as are the jungle maps (Plutonia's first act, the penultimate act of Scythe II, "Caribbean" from TNT) I also like the scenic and picturesque theme that Lost Civilization has in general. Not sure what to call it. "Northern European Countryside"? "Walter Wick Photo"?, "Scenic Landscape"? I have no idea what you'd call those maps but they're great. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

drygnfyre Posted September 28, 2023 Episode 2 maps. The combination of tech base and Hell works very well. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Classic SSG Enjoyer Posted September 28, 2023 I like tech-base theme the most. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
whybmonotacrab Posted September 28, 2023 I'm still a huge fan of gothic maps. I'm a huge fantasy nerd so seeing anything with that aesthetic puts a big ol' smile on my face. I also really like abstract maps - think Minas Morgul from Deus Vult 2, Lullaby, Ribbiks stuff (especially Magnolia), the super whimsical shit Rivi and Danlex did in Capybara, or Warp of Time from Hell Ground. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Stupid Bunny Posted September 28, 2023 My favorite canonical theme would be the E3 hell, best exemplified I think in Pandemonium. I still go back and play that map for inspiration sometimes. Hell-themed maps often end up as fairly standard mixes of stone and marble and red lava-filled caves, and I really love Sandy's mix of wood and flesh and steel and ancient and futuristic all twisted together into an alien, forbidding world of its own. That being said, I also love me some Gothic Hell maps. MAP27 of Scythe II is the best example of this I can think of by far. Both this and Pandemonium are first-time experiences I'll never forget, one alienating, one epic, both brilliant. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Optimus Posted September 28, 2023 Not sure what my answer will be tomorrow, there are lot's in my mind, but one theme I have in mind is about nature or seashores and caves and outdoors or canyons with a good sky. Sometimes can have some structures, buildings but interrupted with passages to nature. It's a more rare theme. Maybe I am thinking of classics like Earth.Wad or more recent like Lost Civilization. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Roofi Posted September 28, 2023 Vanilla compatible realistic locations using the stock textures are always my jam : 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
CravenCoyote Posted September 28, 2023 Fun thread! I quite like the aesthetic of Shores of Hell textured levels, even though I didn't enjoy E2 as much as E1. Other than that, I do quite enjoy greeny jungle kind of themes, and anything looking decayed and abandoned. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Celestin Posted September 28, 2023 My personal favourite are the Moon maps, like Lunatic, Valiant E5 or Solar Struggle E3. Specifically, the grey rocks, sharp contrast between shaded and illuminated areas, techbases suggesting industrial operations and the Earth looming over the horizon. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
