Sour vs hot?

Do you think sour (warheads etc.) or hot (chili peppers etc.) is most painful?

Neither.  Not sure on the exact dates of when these events happened.  Was back in 1996? Was in 4th grade and it was family movie night.  Warheads were brought in copious amount.  Got a good chemical burn on my tongue from it and the sour sensation has never been right since.

 

Then in 2000 I was visiting my brother out at the city he was doing his grad studies at.  His wife being from India had access to some peppers I don't even remember the name of.  Ate one of them whole and followed it up with an energy drink.  Carbonation and whatever else was in that canned acid exacerbated the effect, and hot peppers have never been really the same either.

 

That said, both flavors are enjoyable with their own applications.  Not painful though.

Personally i went to the ER after eating a half carolina reaper pepper so hot is worse for me, never went to any healthcare after eating sour candy, that being said warheads and similar caramels make me scream and shake from pain XD

I voted on this poll (Hot) without reading the OP first, because I just assumed it was referring to which of these two things we prefer over the other. Hot is still more potentially painful than sour, but I absolutely love spicy stuff. Obviously it can be too intense, but for me, the most satisfying meals are the ones that cause you to perspire slightly.

Sour can be more painful unless we're talking about really hot stuff you'd have to go somewhat out of your way to find. There's plenty of sour candy that can literally burn your tongue for days, but most hot stuff only requires rinsing out your mouth, and maybe applying some numbing ointment to your asshole if you're unlucky. The worst is probably burns on the roof of your mouth from pizza, though. It's unavoidable.

I was thinking about the Warhead candy when I voted for sour. Those things are absolutely painful due to the malic acid, they can and will burn your tongue. I've never had that problem with peppers. But speaking from experience, for both the men and women, and everyone in between, don't touch your genitals after cutting up habanero peppers without thoroughly washing your hands.

Neither are painful, but aggressively sour things (Warheads, pickles, hot wings, etc.) taste nasty while chili peppers are awesome. When I use hot sauce, I'll gravitate towards extremely hot sauces like Blair's Death Sauce or mustard-based sauces because vinegar in high concentrations is disgusting.

I love hot things, take that as you will, I like to think my tolerance for heat is pretty decent, can snack on Paqui's haunted ghost pepper like it's a normal bag of potato chips, don't even need water, and I load my macaroni up with hot sauces because it compliments the cheesiness.

I have seen a video of a guy eating malic acid powder with a spoon til he was bleeding, probably painful XD (I think that is dangerous, do not try)

I'm still amazed that some people can be immune to spicy heat, being able to eat any chili without feeling pain.  A couple of years ago I remember someone setting a world record by eating 22 Carolina Reapers in one minute.

If we're talking uncomfortable/unpalatable, I think I'll say sour. I can deal with hot foods better than sour foods. Reminder that I'm talking about whole dishes. I can chew on sour candy or straight lime juice no problem because it's a "one and done thing" rather than something consumed over multiple minutes and multiple mouthfuls.

 

That being said, OP asked which is more painful and I think "Hot" is the correct answer. When we bite into a pepper, the hotness of it is from the capsaicin in said pepper. Capsaicin in unusually high doses (like the type in some of the genetically engineered "hottest pepper in the world with X million scoville spicyness) can make you really sick, more sick than sour can. I believe Capsaicin in high enough doses has an effect similar to pepper spray so yeah.

 

Of course, since the "sour" is from acid, you could argue that sour is more painful because something like Sulphuric Acid is sour and you will die if you drink it. But I don't think anyone is classifying strong acids as "Food" so I don't think it's fair to count it. While Pepper Spray isn't food either, those "hottest peppers in the world" do more damage than the "Sourest food in the world" and those peppers are counted as "food".

I know this is off-topic about edible things, although I don't know the thing that I am about to mention is even edible.

Anyways the spiciest thing in the world is actually resiniferatoxin, I know rn I sound like a fucking nerd, but it's about 16 billion Scoville units.

Which is crazy.

If you consume it you will get serious internal burns and possibly death too. Just don't consume it. I warned you.

Well concitering it takes about a gram or two to do that much damage. I'd say no it's not edible nor should it be eatten.
