So is the US all innocent then? By this logic you shouldn't have Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

That's just social media in general tho

Tik Tok is brain rot AND low attention span for the masses

Just like video games.

I already answered earlier to this bit of whataboutism, so you'll just get a pithy line:

"This pickpocket is so annoying, he keeps stealing my wallet! That's why I'm gonna trust this sadistic serial killer instead."

America isn't any better at all so this pithy line isn't very valid

I already don't use social media as I value what few IQ points I have left. Why would I want an espresso version of it?

Absolutely useless Tik Tok hate from the ancient boomers is already an excellent argument. But time of the dinosaurs is quickly passing. The tick tock time is just coming.

Take it from an "ancient boomer": no one has ever proved a point and won someone to their side by being a rude, arrogant and condescending jackass. Your comments have only reinforced the opposing side of the argument.

I wonder who is the serial killer then. Because one of them sustain their economy by invading other countries, stealing their resources and inciting wars all over the globe. Mostly killing, destroying or purging anyone who isn't alligned with their interests.

I absolutely refuse to get TikTok, I can't stand it. My other issue is it feels very poorly moderated with content, like with half of these so called "challenges" which kind of encourage anti social behaviour, okay granted, YouTube would probably have those types of contents as well, but at least to my knowledge, it's fairly well moderated with stuff like this, especially with the flagging. Hell, I even once heard there was someone on TikTok who even made a video about what UK shops you can easily get away with theft in. Total bollocks.

Tik-Tok is the peak of mainstream Internet. The lowest common denominator use of the technology. The standards were already very low with Social Media in general but Tik-Tok managed to go deeper.

I agree, the app being Chinese hardly matters. Data collection is data collection, I don't care what country is collecting the data. In all honesty I'd rather be monitored by the CCP than the Whitehouse anyway.

I also highly disagree with people who think it should be banned, unless they think all social media should be banned as well. It's actually quite ironic - some Americans want TikTok to be banned in order to say "fuck you" to China, as if the government deciding which apps you're allowed to use isn't the most China thing ever.

I'm pro banning all social media.

But tbh I somebody gave me the choice of use a USA app or an Chinese app, I will 100% go for the USA one just because how fucking secretly and shady China's Gov still...

Holy shit they even has a absolute control of his own nation through Tencent ffs, at least in USA there's "some" sight of his shady bussiness. Even I would trush in VK (Russian Social Media) more than Tik Tok lol

So predictable. And so boring.

Prove me wrong. Feel free to debate me on the points then.

  • Why do you feel that TikTok has net worth over the harms it is known to cause? No, I'm not talking about "The Chinese!" or any of that bullshit (although that is actually a very valid point), I'm talking about stories of teenagers doing some challenge that was popularized on it and winding up in the hospital - or the grave. In my hometown there was a very well-publicized case of teens who broke into a Kia thanks to that TikTok challenge, had a little joyride down a highway, and ended up in a one-car crash that killed four of them and severely injured the remaining two. Do you think this would have happened were there not an algorithm rewarding them for hits, as well as videos showing them how to break into the right type of car?
  • What would you say about algorithms that generally know the users better than themselves? While YouTube (for example) will push things on users based on feedback and such (as TikTok does), there have been documented cases of users finding out that TikTok knew more about their sexuality than they themselves realized, or that other users who have been in depression have found videos encouraging them towards self-harm. For every good thing about an algorithm ("You like cute puppies, you might like this video about cute kittens too!") there's also a bad one ("You're thinking about ending your life, here's the most painless ways to do it."). Do you have an answer for this?
  • No app should be tracking things any more than what a user puts in. TikTok, famously, had a little oopsie in iOS Beta 14, where every single keystroke - even outside of TikTok - was being read by it. It read anything you copied to the clipboard, even if you were not actively using the app at the time. Why would an app need to do this? What is so important that it must force itself to know what I am doing even if what I am doing has nothing to do with my use of TikTok? Would you say that it's acceptable practice that an application know what I'm doing - at all times? Would you like it if Windows sent a copy of every text you copied to the Windows clipboard off to Microsoft? If not, why is it okay for TikTok to do so?

I look forward to your responses. Or, more likely, nothing at all or some smartass blowoff answer like the one I quoted, which I suspect will be the more likely option.

But hey, if you're having difficulty, just consider it the Argument Challenge.
