Ultimate Doom or Doom 1

I liked the help screen art better in the original release, but otherwise ultimate doom is just the same game with extra levels.

Ultimate Doom verses Doom 1.

Ultimate Doom verses:

Ultimate doom

is in bloom.

It's pretty fun

to speedrun.

Doom 1 verses:

Doom one

is also fun.

But I prefer

1x1.

I guess both verses have their pros and cons, so ultimately its up to you what you prefer.

From a practical point of view I'd always go with Doom Ultimate because:

Ultimate Doom has an entirely new episode plus all of Doom 1. Is there anything to discuss?

...but

Doom Registered if you'd like to turn your imagination on and feel how it was for the first time back then if you were one of those pioneers that purchased the game. That's an especially interesting experience to me because I started dooming with a pirated copy of Doom 2 that made came with the used PC my family purchased.

Doom Shareware if I wanted to remember how it was back in 2003 celebrating my best New Year of life being a 7 years old boy. I just made it through a serious surgery and survived, to the greatest misfortune of this forum. I was playing through E1M7 for the last time in that year and then having lots of fun later and had not even fell down to sleep when clocks showed 0:00 2004.

Doom Ultimate for remembering 2006 and how my friend gave me a CD-R with lots of pirated DOS games including Doom "Registered" and "Ultimate" as we didn't have that much of the Internet then to download it. I felt so pumped as my greatest dream came true. I could even remember how I wanted to buy the game in 2004 as literally nobody even knew about it in spite of "cool non-pixelated Pentium 4 games". It's about the same time I discovered aliens mod and pretty much I grown out of Doom and switched over Quake and modding Duke Nukem 3D which I also loved.

For sure, it was a fairly good K5 with a 17in CRT so I had it 200% right.

I know this seems like a super silly topic, and it is. But I actually have a copy of the “original” Doom when it only had 3 episodes. Mainly for nostalgia purposes, but there are some small cosmetic differences with E1M1 and some of the art. I also have multiple copies of the Shareware release including the early 1.1 and 1.2 releases.

I pretty much only use Ultimate Doom for wads, but sometimes when I just want to play the original game I do the 3 episode version.

That’s what is great about Doom. Choice!

The only difference amongst the original three episodes I know of is the E1M1 change that was made for better deathmatch play. Otherwise Ultimate Doom is the same, but adds Episode 4.

Why not share your opinion first while you're at it?

I would rather not, as I wouldn't want this conversation to be biased.

The minor changes, especially to E1M1, actually bother me a lot. So when I play through the series I play with Doom Registered before switching to Ultimate for TFC and Sigil.

I don't really like E4 but as far as I can tell, Ultimate Doom is just Doom 1 + E4 (and minor E1M1 changes which I never noticed before reading this thread) so I'm going to pick Ultimate Doom. Just because I don't like pizza doesn't mean I'm going to refuse a free slice of pizza with my burger.

Yes, I'm not stupid, unlike clicking this link, which is stupid: [snip]

I don't know what that is, and I'm scared to click on it.

In my opinion, like Wolfenstein 3D before it, DOOM was better as a three-episode game.

Some of the best (and worst) maps were in the Nocturnal Missions, I particularly adore episode 5 myself.

I am not the biggest fan of Thy Flesh Consumed, namely due to its front loaded assault on the senses before mellowing out only to spike one last time on E4M6, it has an excellent theme though that's been done better since.

I guess the credits screen in the original Doom is what I liked about it, but that isn't a good enough reason to prefer an earlier version of the game when Ultimate Doom has more full game replacements.

Everybody forgets the extra button in E1M8 of UDoom, seriously the only reason you need to upgrade to it

Actually that button was added in 1.666 :P

Well, since Thy Flesh Consumed is the best episode...

I like where your head is at

Unless I'm wrong, Ultimate Doom adds fast doors, keyed switches and sector type 17 from Doom II, and I literally need fast doors, keyed switches, and sector type 17 to live, so....

I always pick the Ultimate Doom, because I like everything about Thy Flesh Consumed, the orange skybox is beautiful, the levels are pretty good, especially E4M1, E4M2 and E4M6, and E4M8: "Unto The Cruel" beats the first three boss levels in the original Doom in a sense, that's it's an actual level and not just an arena. That's great and all, but after the first two levels of TFC, the levels start getting easier and easier, which I always wish it wasn't, since TFC could've had infinitely more potential, had it been harder like the first two levels.

That being said, I also like the original Doom, since I played it first, and it feels like a more appropriate and correct version of the game, if it makes any sense. The E3 text screen ending practically felt like an high note to end the game on, while TFC barely had any story and it feels more like DLC.

Clearly, it's Doom 1. Obviously "Ultimate Doom" was just an attempt to exploit customers by getting us all to pay for something stupidly hard without any thought given to the design. Anyone who thinks the various little E1 redesings enhanced things in any way is cracked. And frankly, that's nothing I want to be smoking.

i think theres smth a lot more nice ab doom being 3 episodes w/ its ending where it is, but episode 4 is functionally just a handful of extra maps that dont actually change anything ab the material ending

I think episode 4 has generally a higher maps quality, I wouldn't say it's Plutonia but it's definitely harder than Doom 2, it also looks better. If only they remastered the episode 2 and especially 3 ugly maps, that would have been an absolute win possibly.
