Some Alpha Versions of Doom

Found a website with the alpha versions of Doom that copied the versions directly from another website listed within the first. All of them need to be run within DOSBox, but all work. Hell, it even includes a patch for the press release so you can play it on any date. If you don't have DOSBox it can be found here.

I always thought it was interesting that the alphas/demos were playing with the idea of swapping Episodes 2 and 3. I think the idea of going to Hell, then returning only to find Hell has followed you, is a better design idea. And I think that's what Doom 3 did. In classic Doom, it would also have made the cyber-demon the final fight, which is probably a better battle than against the spider mastermind.

oh, that's not the first time I realized I'm a total idiot lol.

It is never late enough to be amazed by old Stuff :)

It is also nice to see how some of the early Ideas got brought into Doom 3, well almost the Experience in the Base before everthing goes down to Hell (or does Hell comes up, hmm).

Edit:

I love seing such Stuff, because you can follow a creative Process evolving.

What worked and what didn't and also technical Details.

But i am a Sucker for such Stuff

I've spend Years learning about 3000+ Years of Roman/European/Mediterranean History and Languages, because i was curious, why i am understanding the italian Girls in the Backrow at School as a spanish Guy.

If that's the case, the alphas and demos are also interesting because you see the gradual move away from arcade mentality. Score was removed, as was various collectable items. Soul sphere originally gave you another life, before lives were also removed. IGN had a E1 play-through with John Romero about a decade ago, and it was really interesting because Romero talks a lot about how he made the E1 maps, and the overall design goals of the game.
