What does it take to become a Doomgod (in your opinion)?

In terms of gaming prowess, I personally think mastering the hard stuff. You know, starting off with like Speed of Doom and then stuff like Sunlust, Swim with the Whales, Entropy, Sunder - I'd imagine there's some overlap with getting good at slaughter at some point, too.

On the content side, making something people will like and cherish for a long time, then doing it again. It can be a mod that is just funny or cool, a memorable map, a great episode, cool textures, cool midis, or you just spread awareness of those things.

But above all, I'd say it has a lot with being generally nice and approachable no matter your achievements in the community. I'm still a little wowed some big names react to my posts when I show a map I'm making.

Becoming a doom god requires being a complete masochist.

In other words beating ludicrously hard maps at which most sane people wouldn't have the patience to play.

To obtain the rank of "Doom Connoisseur", you must complete a pacifist run of NUTS.WAD while standing on your head naked, clutching the little plastic bust of John Romero's head from the Collector's Edition of Sigil between your butt-cheeks.

In a more specific sense: Play through the wads in this list. Try to 100% them, keep climbing, maybe try to work from many saves to little to no saves for maps that challenge you. It likely isn't an optimal method, but it's the method that worked for becoming a better player for me when I was on a quest to "beat the hardest doom maps that people ever made that are actually possible". I guess I'm still on that quest somewhat.

In a general sense: play stuff that challenges you, experience a vast range of situations in doom (everything from slaughter crowd management to BFG tracer/shot optimization, to lining up monsters with the SSG, to taking advantage of infighting and pacifist strats, and way way more), and when playing hard stuff try to go from using many saves/rewinds to fewer so you can learn to string together sequences better without dying and relying on save states. Getting to a "doom god" state will also take a lot of time (hundreds, thousands of hours), so don't expect to be as good as someone like Vile after 2 weeks if you currently find something like Alien Vendetta as where you bump your head on a skill ceiling. Learning to speedrun can help out with skill improvement as well, it naturally leads to an optimization/increasing of efficiency and effectiveness in your play of a map, and it can develop skills that will be applicable in both casual play and in speedrunning other maps.

And Doomgod is a silly term, that's partly why you got a bunch of responses that I would guess aren't that helpful to you. Good luck if you decide to take on a journey of skill improvement.

Thanks Kinetic!

While I'm not on a quest to become an insanely good player, I actually loosely follow the list you posted (I only play what catches my interest) and right now I'm about halfway through, as I 100%'ed Valiant saveless (on UV of course).

My next big goal is replaying Hell Revealed in the same manner, and maybe I'll try speedrunning maps from Icarus, Scythe and similar short WADs in the UV-Max category.

Apart from that, I'll mostly keep playing interesting stuff in a way that's fun to me, as there's way more to this game than just skill improvement.

No wonder Scythe II was so hard for me, it's practically near the bottom of the list. That is one I could've done better on, especially the last five maps, I pretty much gave up at the time and started throwing in multiple saves in a short window just to bring the tension down with a bunch of the fights. Alien Vendetta is funny, the last ten or so get slaughter-y but really the one that is designed to make one reconsider limited saving is MAP26: Dark Dome, just comes out of nowhere with one of if not the hottest start I've ever seen and it seems like nowhere is safe and it's just a long grueling slog, my-then key saves basically went out the window the moment that map showed up. I didn't think Hell Revealed 1 was all that bad upon revisiting it last time but I do recall MAP23: Ascending to the Stars being kind of a fucking bitch with limited saves. HR2 was downright unplayable at some points but I don't see it on that list which might be a testament to its fuckheadedness.

So how I normally play? OK.

You're only a Doomgod if you beat Okuplok on UV while doing a handstand and balancing a barbell on your feet while a propeller with a whip attached to it spanks you at a rate of 5 strikes per second.

And if at any point you nut you lose the entire run.

Everyone knows... that the true master of Doom must be able to beat John Romero in a deathmatch.

Or wrestle Sandy Petersen in a bathtub full of olive oil. Or avocado oil. I guess it depends

Yes. This is the best answer.
