DoomGuy999 Posted October 2, 2023 Doom. Most people I know dislike it. :( Is sad now... doom is such a great game, it's a shame people don't realize it. And, if doom can run on rat brain cells, it could probably run on a human. Therefore, they kinda hate themselves But they don't realize it. And that's a "little secret" Nevermind, they aren't smart enough for games which came out 30 years ago. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
DNSKILL5 Posted October 3, 2023 Duke Nukem Land of the Babes. The plot is ridiculous and all that, but the gameplay feels more Duke-like than Time to Kill. Time to Kill is a good game, but it feels like Duke Does Tomb Raider. LOTB feels more like a traditional TPS that were common on the PS1 at the time. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted October 3, 2023 (edited) Deus Ex: Invisible War. It is not a great game at all, but I found it much more engaging than Deus Ex. Fallout 3's Mothership Zeta DLC. While it feels more like a janky shooter from the early 2000s than a Fallout game, it is a much better experience than the similarly-structured Operation: Anchorage! DLC thanks to its unique setting and some surprisingly memorable companions. Die Hard on the NES. The controls might be a little clunky and the difficulty unforgiving, but it is actually a rather clever game that manages to stick to the source material fairly well while allowing some interesting deviations for the movie's plot thanks to its semi-nonlinear structure. INfront95 Posted October 3, 2023 James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game I dunno, bought it spontaneously, and finished it several times on all endings. Its clearly B project with a lot of B studio jank, but i liked it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
DogsRNice Posted October 3, 2023 I enjoy Fallout 4, I know its not perfect (the story is full of so many missed opportunities and the setting kinda makes no sense given the time since the war) but I still really enjoy it anyway. Building is fun (even through the issues that I have since I use the arrow keys for movement) and the map has tons of interesting places to explore. The companions are great too, one of my biggest disappointments with starfield is the companions aren't really as interesting as fallout 4s, they just kinda exist like skyrims. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Origamyde Posted October 3, 2023 (edited) I'm a huge sucker for Tomb Raider : Angel of Darkness. This game is terrible. It's chock-full of unfulfilled ambitions, terribly-implemented ideas and execution, jank and non-sensical stuff happening all at once. Everyone hated it, people made scathing reviews about it, and it literally killed Core Design and Eidos (before the licence was brought back by Crystal Dynamics) due to its reputation. For me, though, it's a guilty pleasure. I grew up with it when I was younger, and while I fully acknowledge it is a terrible action platformer (which you can't even play properly without patches) compared to earlier Tomb Raider iterations (although I'd argue Tomb Raider 5 is the worst of the bunch), I still sometimes re-install it, play it again, and envision an alternate dimension where this was a gem instead of a massive turd. I remember that there is a fan-made restoration/remaster project on the works, but I haven't checked what progress they've made so far. There was also a reissue of some of Peter Connelly's work within a special anniversary edition album of Tomb Raider's most iconic songs (as often with games like these, it's always the soundtrack which is a net positive compared to the actual game), a remastered version of AoD's soundtrack called the Dark Angel Symphony, as well as MIDI demos. So that's about it. Edited October 3, 2023 by Origamyde 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lila Feuer Posted October 3, 2023 Carmageddon TDR 2000. Aesthetically it is the nicest looking of the old games and is closer to the first installment in terms of setting, although tonally it is the darkest entry in the series and has more story than anyone realistically asked for in a game about smashing other cars and running down peds. It also takes a lot of artistic liberty with references to pop culture, to the point of not being even remotely subtle like including the Thunderdome in a desert level with cop cars from the first Mad Max. Missions are more gratuitous in number than Carma 2 but are for the most part easier and are only sometimes bullshit (launch the statue on hard mandates knowledge of the game mechanics to finish on time, kangaroo ability anyone?) it also has a total downer of an ending after everything you go through but I still like it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lippeth Posted October 3, 2023 (edited) Starfield - All Much of the criticism it's gotten so far is warranted but I'm still having fun at 110+ hours with no mods, so I don't know, it kinda slaps for me. Resident Evil 3 remake - Sure it's not as expansive as Nemesis but it was never out to replace the original and is fun to play them both back to back. RE2 remake has similar issues regarding its A and B playthroughs but is still considered a great game. I also really like Resident Evil Village, and while I don't think it's as universally disliked, it's usually one of the least favorites of most RE fans. Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (I especially liked this one), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Yeah they're a bit on the paint-by-numbers side of things but the combat always feels good and I like the locations and schlocky story beats. Shadow has by far the weakest story (which is really saying something) and the whole game grinds to a halt at the hidden city, but still has tons of great locations and tomb puzzles. Back 4 Blood - Yeah I don't know I just liked the guns and met some cool people while playing online, and that was enough to keep me playing for a few hundred hours. I don't ever feel like playing it nowadays, but on the plus side it got me back into Left 4 Dead 1 and 2. Quake 4 - Again, I kind of just like the weapons and I'm a sucker for any game with a flashlight/torch. Doom 3 - It's like comfort food for me. Something about the dark and claustrophobic setting, the ambient humming and whirring of machines, hearing Steve Blum's voice around every corner as a different character... it just hits all the right nerves for me and I can't put it down until I've beaten it at least twice in a row, along with Resurrection of Evil. I've played it so many times now that I know most all of the storage locker codes by heart, at least in the first half. I've even heard the same criticisms people have so much that I can recite them like lyrics to a song. All together now: Spoiler the gameplay's too slow the guns sound too weak the shotgun spread sucks you can't see your feet why can't you hold your weapon and the flashlight at the same time you can't tell me the future doesn't have duct tape lying around the bfg edition flashlight runs out of energy It's a good game, it's just not a good Doom game Edited October 3, 2023 by Lippeth 8 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tangra Posted October 3, 2023 (edited) Chaser! Yes, this Chaser: Spoiler A few years ago i was doing a big classic FPS marathon, and outside the popular 90's/early 2000's choices, i added a few obscure titles to the list, with Chaser being one of them. Going completely blind into it, i was blown away by the scope and ambition this game has. It is rough around the edges for sure, maybe even rushed on release. As a result, it has some problems, one of them being the damage calculation, which is awful and almost ruins the combat. But the variety, the setting, the story, the levels, all create a very interesting experience. The story is a bit of a Total Recall rip-off, so if you've watched the movie, you might predict some plot points and twists, but you definitely not going to predict how the game ends. The setting... You start in a 2001: A Space Odyssey like station, orbiting Earht, then you crash-land in a futuristic dystopian city, where you get involved with the local mafia. Later you escape their clutches and travel to Russia where you board a shuttle to Mars. There are like 15-20 hours of gameplay here, which is huge amount for any FPS of this period. You also get two completely different set of weapons for the Earth and Mars levels. The levels are also very adventurous, players who like to explore big maps will have a blast here. It is also among the first (if not the first) first-person shooter to use bullet time, like in Max Payne. It is very useful, because with the inconsistent damage calculation the difficulty is merciless. Edited October 3, 2023 by Tangra 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shakariki Heisenberg Posted October 3, 2023 Duke it out in D.C - honestly i would go as far to say its better than the ocean one but idk. but obv nuke winter is the worst out of the 3. Btd battles - its fun even with stupid powers that are way to OP and toxic 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted October 3, 2023 (edited) Sorry about the first post. For whatever reason, the forum glitched out on me: I could not add anything after the ping, I could not delete it and it kept showing up even after I tried refreshing the page. Naturally, Doomworld does not let me delete posts either. :S What I was going to say is that, aside from maybe Back 4 Blood, none of the games you mentioned are hated as far as I am aware, @Lippeth. Kwisior Posted October 3, 2023 (edited) Redneck Rampage. It's not incredible - the game is buggy, one level is incompleteable without cheats, the hit detection is awful, some enemies are straight up broken, and that sewer level exists - but it's a charming and unique title nonetheless. Lila Feuer Posted October 3, 2023 @Kwisior Which level was broken? I've beaten it on the second hardest difficulty without cheats. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Lila Feuer Posted October 3, 2023 Oh it's broken in a weird way, I think they programmed those to be one time use or some nonsense as such, but only that particular switch acts up if you attempt to use it without the key. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Rudolph Posted October 3, 2023 (edited) Oh, speaking of Mega Man X, Mega Man X7 is actually not that bad. I had fun playing it on the PC, even though it can be quite janky at times. For reasons that now escape me, I even had the (above-average) soundtrack replaced with Descent I and II's tracks, but I vividly remember using Descent II's "Are You Descent?" as the boss fight theme - probably because I heard it a lot as I kept getting my ass kicked. More controversially, I also liked Mighty Number 9 and I do wish there could have been a sequel. Edited October 3, 2023 by Rudolph 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

taufan99 Posted October 3, 2023 Legend of the Seven Paladins 3D. Yes, that one game that kinda came out from a deal between Apogee and Accend, Inc. (a Taiwanese game developer) that fell through, but with the development still continued and the game eventually released locally (as well as in South Korea with an addition of one new playable character, though we probably never have that one version preserved). Bluntly speaking, even without the buggy enemy attack logic speed (which doesn't help its unfortunate circumstances), the game is rather tedious with narrow sectors flooded by enemies eager to take you down and confusing map layouts. Still, I appreciate the fact that the game is technically the first published BUILD Engine game, and I dig East Asian stuff, so I give it a pass. Also, BuildGDX lets you play the game natively on any supported modern OS, alongside an option to fix the enemy attack logic speed (which you can toggle, just in case you still like the bullet hellish attacks for some reason). 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Kind of like Fallout 3 back in the days. For the longest time, I was under the impression, based solely on online comments, that it was not only the worst Fallout game ever made (worse even than The Brotherhood of Steel!), but also just a bad game altogether. Such takes make you forget that Fallout 3 was a smash hit that not only brought the franchise back from the dead, but also made was used to be a niche IP into a mainstream one. Even Tim Cain seems to think highly of it. Edited October 3, 2023 by Rudolph 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lila Feuer Posted October 3, 2023 I played FONV first and while it was arguably the better of the two modern Fallouts at the time I still manage to enjoy the world Bethesda crafted and its wartorn atmosphere and there's even things in it that iirc NV doesn't do like npcs that actually run away from you when badly injured and all the destructibles in the environment that really light firefights up even more, but that may of been due to Bethesda's meddling with NV during development. Also that absolute beast that is the combat shotgun. I'm well aware it doesn't handle a lot of things right regarding the lore in the other games and the state of the world looks like the bombs just dropped 50 years ago and not 200, but then there's things in NV that don't make sense either. Writing is hard. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
ETTiNGRiNDER Posted October 3, 2023 Anyone who knows me well enough can probably anticipate my main answer - Witchaven. A little more on the fence about Witchaven 2, they made the level designs better but most other things worse (particularly stat balance / bug-riddenness, and the weapon enchantment shrines were a valiant idea that mostly ended up being a discount Tome of Power that also suffered bugs). I'd say Corridor 7 is over-hated also, in the realm of Wolf-alikes, it's fine. I'm sure being released late in the engine's lifetime and taking an ill-advised potshot at Doom on the box cover did it no favors. As far as I can recall otherwise at the moment, I have a bit of a soft spot for Robodemons. It's definitely not that good, but some aspects of it are kind of cool. I know I had a lot more that I could put on the "it's a bad game, but I enjoy it" list, but I'm kind of drawing a blank on the rest at the moment. Probably most of them would be questionable NES titles / DOS shareware weirdness. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted October 3, 2023 F3AR and Dead Space 3 are good games. The former, especially, I must have spent more hours in it than both its predecessors combined. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Black Star Posted October 3, 2023 Borderlands 3. It got shit on because it's wasn't Borderlands 2 2, but the actual gunplay is so much better than its predecessor, not to mention the movement. Jumping is still janky as ever but running and sliding around during firefights feel really fluid and satisfying. Really makes me wish to have a Borderlands this kind of gameplay that has every Vault Hunter in it. A more mobile Brick, Sal or Kreig? Inject that into meeeee 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
