VoanHead Posted October 4, 2023 People shit on Arkham Origins being the weakest of the Batman Arkham Series, but I honestly quite enjoy it. The Deathstroke boss fight was awesome, fighting the final boss of Bane was intense, and the DLC Cold, cold heart was also pretty cool as well. Joker’s origin story was neat to see, and I thought Troy Baker did a fine enough job voicing Joker, wish I could see him doing it more. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Individualised Posted October 4, 2023 (edited) The New Super Mario Bros series. People like to shit on these games for being generic, bland, uninspired, etc. - I once saw someone go as far as to call it the Sonic 4 of Mario which is a massive overexaggeration and an insult to the games. In actuality they're not "bad" games, the worst one of them has to be NSMB2 and that one is mediocre at worst, certainly nothing like Sonic 4 which I think most people can agree is a "bad" game.. The first game isn't really anything like the rest of the series at all (it's far from "generic" - it has very vibrant and well put together visuals unlike the rest of the series and it was the first 2D Mario game in a long while) yet people still lump it in with the rest of the series which also seems a bit unfair to me. The game has different engaging sections like the gunship sequence, mechs and environment. Despite its age the game had really iconic moments for me at least from the several playthroughs and multiplayer sessions I would have with friends and family. Red faction 2 was the sole reason I owned my first console.  I think the thing that really hurt RF2 even more than the change of story is the fact that the PC port is extremely limited. Unlike RF1, RF2's PC version doesn't have online MP and no level editor was ever released for it.  As for my contribution to this thread, I would mention Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3). That game is much better than what people say about it. Sure, UT3 suffered from less options and the over cluttered graphics (typical of the PS360 era), but the core gameplay was as solid as ever. It arguably had the best weapon balance (unlike UT200X which had hitscan weapons being dominant). The vehicle modes were also much more fun and dynamic than those in UT2004. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
whybmonotacrab Posted October 4, 2023 1 hour ago, QuaketallicA said:  Tomb Raider is one of the rare exceptions where the remakes are objectively better and outshine the original series. Yes it started out as an Uncharted clone, but both TR and Uncharted are in essence Indiana Jones clones anyway, so what? I agree it got better with the second game Rise of the Tomb Raider. I got the 3rd game for free on Epic a while back, but by that point I stopped really caring for the TR series so I never really played much of it. Hard disagree. They are not objectively better. You may like them better but that's like saying Quake 4 is objectively the best Quake because it's more modern and has more advanced graphics. The modern games forsake a lot of the things that gave the original its identity. The new Tomb Raider games place the emphasis more on combat than puzzles and platforming, effectively shifting the genre of the games. I get a lot of people don't like tank controls, but the PS2 trilogy of Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld exist as updated versions of the formula that are still good.   Also, Tomb Raider 2013 is like the Justice League movie compared to Uncharted's The Avengers - it sucks all the fun and lightheartedness and replaces it with bland characters, edgy unnecessary and gratuitous violence against Lara. I have nothing against gore or edginess, but it's extremely out of place in this series. I like the second game even less because it basically repeats the character arc of the first game and does some gross stuff with religion. The third game is the only actually good one in the series because it returns the emphasis to puzzles and platforming while making combat a bit rarer and more impactful. The plot actually advances characters and occasionally even lets them interact like human beings.   Sorry. I know I just said I wouldn't rant about the series, but you said it's objectively better which is a dumb thing to say about any form of art/entertainment because it's all entirely subjective. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

whybmonotacrab Posted October 4, 2023 Anyway, to counteract the negativity I just spewed: Fortnite. Obviously not everyone hates it because it's super popular, but it gets an overwhelming amount of hate from people my age mainly because kids like it. It has its problems - I don't like the monetisation or how it weaponises FOMO - but it gives me a chance to spend time with my younger brother, and I like that it has side quests so even if I don't win I can still work towards achieving something. Plus there is just something inherently entertaining about going fishing or building a snowman in the middle of a Battle Royale situation. I also really appreciate the tools it is giving people as an entry point into game design. It's a free, simplified version of the Unreal Engine that comes with all the assets from Fortnite and lets people create and share their games. Hopefully it encourages a whole new generation of game developers and we get some fresh and interesting voices from it.   I maybe am just a bit more fond of it because it helped me and my younger brother heal a strained relationship but oh well. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheMagicMushroomMan Posted October 4, 2023 @whybmonotacrab I agree with you about the new Tomb Raider games. I could go on for days about why I dislike them compared to the original, but let's just say that they completely lack the charm and soul of the originals and leave it at that. The first game in the reboot series is one of the most unfulfilling games I've ever finished. It felt empty, soulless, and generic. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Actually, as an answer to the OP's question - I really liked Silent Hill Downpour and perfer it to at least two or three other games in the series. Wish it had a PC port. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Murdoch Posted October 4, 2023 On the Tomb Raider front, i dont mind the new games. The world design is amazing, but yeah the portrayal of Lara is... not ideal. I get what they were trying to do, just not sure it was a good idea to do it.  The original games had appalling controls. My favourites are Legend, Anniversary and Underworld. Better controls, nice graphics, and i felt Lara had a lot more personality. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I still haven't checked out the new remasters of TR 1-3, but they looked a little goofy from the trailer I watched. The three games you mentioned brought the series up a notch in terms of playability while still maintaining the charm and feel of the originals. Angel of Darkness is terrible, and from what I recall Chronicles was pretty mediocre, I never finished it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

MundyC Posted October 4, 2023 I'll go ahead and pick Zelda's Adventure. This game is absolute jank and stank, and I can't say I disagree. The amount of people that actually like it is, I dunno, one-and-a-half dozen people. And yet, Zelda's Adventure is genuinely fascinating to me. From its cut content, to its development history, to Viridis themselves, and so on...  All of it is a shining example of a developer promising the biggest and best game ever, then failing on all fronts due to a number of internal and external factors. I genuinely love finding new information and lore about this game, and I believe there's still more to find out.  I'd also pick The Faces of Evil and The Wand of Gamelon, but recent fan remaster and Arzette events have helped to improve their reputation. They're not as hated as they were in, say, 2009 to 2012. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Vermil Posted October 4, 2023 (edited) Toshinden 4. Â It didn't receive very good ratings on release compared to it's predecessors. One magazine summed it up as 'four beat em up's and a funeral'. But maybe because I am a big Toshinden fan, I still find it a lot of fun inspite of it's alleged jank. Edited October 4, 2023 by Vermil 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I still haven't checked out the new remasters of TR 1-3, but they looked a little goofy from the trailer I watched.  I think they look about as good as remasters in that janky old engine could. I am hoping they may have improved the controls somehow, but it seems improbable. Such tweaks are usually beyond the scope of remasters. Being a huge history and archaeology buff, I always loved the idea of Tomb Raider but just couldn't get into the first five games due to the controls being so shoddy. And Angel of Darkness, yes well as you say, quite the disaster. But the Legend trilogy is where it finally hit it's stride for me. Just gave it quick play now on my new 4K monitor. Still looks decent if a bit glitchy in spots, and the controls are superb. Love the banter between Lara and her boys back home. Gives a lot more personality to the proceedings, and it was good for seamlessly blending in some exposition without slowing the game. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

volleyvalley Posted October 4, 2023 Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex. The game itself may have rehashed alot of Crash 3, with clunky controlls and sometimes questionable level design, but in turn, it had the best soundtrack of the entire franchise. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Naan Posted October 4, 2023 - Doom 3. I liked the Half-life-esque take on the original Doom lore with the whole "experiment went wrong" and having the whole Doom 2 bestiary thrown in. - The Mass Effect trilogy. Layely I've seen more and more people bitching about its gameplay, story and narration being a bit… dated. I played the whole trilogy during the lockdown and got blown away by its background and storyline. The least liked episode for me was Mass Effect 2 as it gave up too much of its RPG elements to become a cover shooter game. - Diablo Immortal. It's basically a Genshin Impact clone with a Diablo skin while its gacha/p2w elements only affects PvP which is a small, passable part of the game. The game has its flaws but all the MTX talk hides them. Why people praise Genshin Impact and MiHoYo games while shitting on Diablo Immortal at the same time is beyond my comprehension. - Redfall. Only played a few dozen hours but had fun and enjoyed the arcade take on the open world principle. Clearly not the industrial disaster everyone claimed. - WoW Cataclysm. After a dumbed down expansion that made its commercial success, everyone left WoW when they actually make guilds relevant again by restoring some challenge akin to Burning Crusade. I guess people liked PUGing and facerolled the whole content. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

ETTiNGRiNDER Posted October 4, 2023 Oh, I see some people mentioning the Spear of Destiny expansion packs. I thought they were nothing to write home about (beyond new graphics being cool sometimes) but playable enough. Both of them. Yeah, there may have been a couple eyebrow-raising choices (the one that sticks in my mind is this one level where you start in a seemingly sealed square room and have to find a bunch of pushwalls to similar rooms before you can eventually get out, I could have done without that one), but for the most part I'm not entirely sure what was so wrong with them compared to Wolf 3-D's shenanigans in general. I may, at this point, have to admit that maybe I can't quite grasp what differentiates a "good" Wolf-engine level, beyond not being a blatantly bad one (e.g. not a single-texture maze with no landmarks or crammed with an insurmountable amount of big enemies for the resources you're given.)  One thing that does bug me though... does anyone else feel like at some point some of the levels/graphics for one of the mission packs got (inadvertently?) swapped to the other one? I remember the nuclear project mission having some computer lab looking environments but the tech from the future one... not having anything like that, except for the boss map at the end. Kind of seems like it should have been the other way around, or at least that the future tech mission should have had more techy textures of its own and not just more brick castles and such. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

jupiter_ex Posted October 4, 2023 ooh, I'm an expert on this. I actually enjoyed Daikatana when it came out (though started seeing the shortcomings later), and also pretty much enjoyed Pariah (anybody remembers Pariah?), love Doom 3 and played it countless times in all its incarnations and DLCs and I was having a soft spot for Wolfenstein Youngblood while I generally didn't like the Machine Games Wolfensteins. I guess I have a radar for this. I can say Amnesia a Machine for Pigs. I liked it A LOT more than the original (it helps that I hated the original). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Lippeth Posted October 5, 2023 (edited) I don't think "everyone" is meant to be taken so literally, otherwise there wouldn't be much room for discussion. "Everyone" in this context could be your circle of friends, an online community or Youtubers/streamers and their hordes of commenters, a particularly loud minority, critic scores vs user scores or just generally what an individual "feels" is everyone. It might sound like a cop out to take so many liberties but that's how I've been reading into it and the discussion has been relatively entertaining to me so far, for such a brief op. Â There are of course some games listed here that I consider generally well liked, and I've listed a few that others have had a different surrounding experience with, but I like hearing everyone's stories and different points of view all the same (including yours, @TheMagicMushroomMan). Â That said, "everyone" could very well be meant explicitly, I'm sure@TheNoiseClassicDooMfan can clarify. Edited October 5, 2023 by Lippeth 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
