It's got several things that not only Doom doesn't have, but even Duke 3D which came out a year later didn't have. Such as: --Civilians roaming the streets. --FMV cutscenes, with different outcomes depending on how you perform during the mission. --very different style of level design compared to typical FPS games. It drops you into a world and has you go back and forth searching for the main target to kill. Feels more like GTA in that sense. --ability to go back and forth to different areas like in Quake II, saving progress from what you did before. Strife did this in Doom engine, but I believe that too was 1996 and this was 1995. Also Strife is part RPG, while this is pure FPS. --totally digitized actors into sprites and photo-realistic buildings. If Duke 3D gets credit for this, I don't see why this shouldn't since it did it first. --Kickass Soundtrack. Especially if you go into sound setup and change it to the Roland setting. Personally, this to me felt like the kind of game I expected Rise of the Triad to be like, based on all of the positive buzz and warm feelings people have to that game. But in reality ROTT is just another crappy Wolfenstein clone. I can excuse Blake Stone since that came out only a year after Wolf 3D, but by the time of ROTT still having those 90 degree angle corridor levels with no memorable design so you just get lost and no real story or sense of progression--that all just felt very crappy. ROTT's got the same digitized sprites as Tek War, but that's where the similarities end. Not to say ROTT isn't fun, but it's not very good either. Tek War seems like a totally overlooked gem imo. You have to see it in action though.....it was probably rushed and Les Bird wasn't exactly John Carmack....but it might have been more mismanagement than incompetence. I feel like Intracorp, Capstone's parent company, might have just seen it as a money making opportunity and behaved accordingly 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
