Why is dsda-doom source port laggy?

Oh i am certain you copied the PrBoomX files over to a fresh copy of PrBoom+ UM latest version per the instructions, right?

And otherwise you would tell more as to why it wouldn't launch. Is there an error, is there unexpected behavior, etc...

Sorry about that! I completely forgot about the dll files.

Also prboomx is laggy too, wtf.

Is this on Windows?

Did you install the Windows dependencies (they are in the bin/ folder in that zip)?

If not, do you have any more information?

EDIT: Disregard, original post above was edited; looks like it is launching now.

Yes I am in windows, It turned out it wasn't launching because I was missing some dll files.

It's working now :)

So you didn't read the instructions.

And PrBoom is also laggy? @JadingTsunamiwhat do you think? Maybe PrBoomX should be its own application instead of having to install into a PrB+ folder.

I think your hardware is too weak, unless you provide more details on which resolution you ran PrBoomX and such and so.

I would like to understand "laggy" better here. If it's not frame drops (another comment says fps is solid at 60fps), then understanding what laggy means is important.

Maybe a video would help explain it better.

I feel like the higher I set the resolution the laggier it becomes.

On Prboomx i ran the resolution at 800x400 and my fps is from 40 to 39

Just to be clear here's what's happening:

On WOOF! the fps stays at 60 and it feels like 60 fps too, only lags on huge and detailed maps.

On DSDA-DOOM the fps monitor says it's on 60 fps even though that's farther from the truth because the gameplay feels like 30 fps not 60.

On Prboomx the fps monitor says I am on 40 to 39 fps, which is weird considering I have the same settings for woof as prboomx and prboomx still lags. I guess woof was designed to balance performance as well?

dude,

please download the latest artifact version of PrBoomX.

https://github.com/JadingTsunami/prboomX/actions/runs/6413265155

Check whether the perf issue exists now or not.

Oh yeah, and this is my DSDA-Doom config.

dsda-doom (1).zip

I can't seem to find the download link, would you mind telling me where is it?

The same issue persists.

It still says I am on 60 fps even tho it feels like 40 or 30.

Sorry for the double post.

Alr I made an account.

Where is the download link, (I am in the github link you sent me)

Sorry if I am asking dumb questions I barely know anything about github.

EDIT: I figured it out.

Again you try to run heavy maps on a machine that is rather weak by comparison.

I use scythe 2 map 01.

I don't think it's a heavy map don't you think?

dude, my processor and hardware is even weaker than his, but still, resource-intensive maps like Nuts.wad run smoothly on 60 fps with PrBoomX and 1280X720 resolution with OpenGL renderer, so how come my processor is better in terms of performance than his ? Extremely weird

On prboomx it's now 60 fps, although it's still acting the same as dsda-doom 60 fps monitor problem.

I guess i'll have to stick to woof!

I don't know how to debug "it's 60fps but feels like 40fps" without clarifying information about where this feeling is coming from. You are calling the gameplay laggy but the framerate isn't dropping, which doesn't make sense.

At this point I suspect some application running in the background is interfering with your gameplay, either by grabbing keystrokes or mouse movements, or causing some kind of strange hardware behavior. Ordinarily the advice would be to update your drivers, but you mentioned you've done that already. The other thing would be to close all background applications including things like discord, recording apps, etc. and try again.

Also, I recommend you to do a full virus of your PC by some powerful antivirus like Avast antivirus. Buy its premium pack to unlock all its features and to keep malware, viruses etc at bay.

Keep upgrading it as well.

Viruses, malware, junk, etc and other such uninvited guests can affect the performance of anyone's system irrespective it is a mobile phone/computer/laptop

Another benefit of Avast is it regularly searches for driver updates to optimize your system's performance. I highly recommend you to install Avast (if you haven't buyed/installed one).

The computer I got is fairly new and I aware of what I download.

How about you give Nugget-Doom a shot? It's a fork of Woof except with a boatload of new features, including higher upscaled-resolution settings (between 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x Doom's native resolution)

It probably won't solve much as on the systems I played Nugget on those higher resolution options are quite taxing, but given how Woof seems to work good on your system while PRBoom doesn't, this might be a good hail mary (unless there are other reasons why you'd prefer DSDA/PRBoomX over Woof than just the latter's hardline resolution)

This is exactly what i needed, Tysm

Nugget makes everything better, I've been a Woof! devotee for two years and it's just that except with more stuff I'm finding hard to live without.

Yeah, nugget has more features.

I'll miss woof!

You used Sunder MAP20 before, which is what i went with.

Because clearly his Intel driver or an external option is causing any percieved lag.

Perhaps this is due to ticrate, or a Intel driver flag for vsync, XESS or something similar. This might also be due to framespikes. There are games out there who update the world at 60 fps, but the shutter speed of the ingame camera does not operate at the same speed. The result is that the game reports a 60 fps output, but the ingame world sim is operating at less than that.

But i doubt that applies to a port like PrBoomX or DSDA, so i figure it is an external setting that does this. But this is only guesswork because we dont have any detailed hardware details.

Hope this is enough information to figure out what's wrong.

If not can you specify what else do you need?

No. This is specifically about:

  • Intel graphic driver settings
  • Any external program that may interfere with performance. This could be an overlay, it could be a program like antivirus, anything.

Since its a UHD 600, how does Helion run? That setup should likely yield 60 fps since a Radeon HD 8400 (Which is similarily low end) hits 60 fps on a lot of maps, even demanding ones.

btw op If you don't know what Helion is; it's a source port written in C# that's specially designed to be as optimized as possible

It's pretty neat but I do gotta warn: You can only change the settings by editing the config file or by punching commands in the in-game console
