I think doomworld should allow uploads of straightup wads instead of zips

Recommended Posts

maybe im just a lazy piece of shit who cant do the very simple task of making a zip folder and putting my wad in there and then uploading it to my profile or whatever but like idk.
maybe theres some reason we cant just upload a wad directly instead of zipping it but it would be pretty nice if we could just upload a wad or pk3 straightup and pk3 is basically just a renamed zip in the first place so//

Yeah I can't live without it.

Not wanting to Zip is, well you said it yourself,  it's lazy. As Bio said, space isn't unlimited, nor is it free.

Be grateful you even have the ability to add attachments at all - storage space costs money. I know you probably weren't thinking about it that way though. Most attachments on this forum could have been uploaded to third party hosts instead, and I assume it would save Mr. Stein some money if he didn't have to pay for our laziness.

By the way, I know there is a relatively obscure link to donate to Doomworld. Can anybody share that with me?

Real ones use those awful sites to host their files instead with like 30 fake download buttons.

I'd like to take this moment to salute the patriots who download from Mediafire without an Ad Blocker.

True that but for the love of goth don't use the attachment system it's a trap might as well get rid of it.

The attachment system is fine for just quickly sharing zips of wad prototypes and demos for simple local forum interactions.

Though keep in mind that Doomworld hosts images too when you paste them raw into your posts, not just .zips - this is definitely a trap.  Images will eat up your account's 50 MB limit in no time.  Instead, use external image hosting for your images and copy their link URL into your post.

7zip is fine, but this will help some Windows users:

On Windows, you can Right Click -> Send To -> Compressed (zipped) folder.  This creates a zip file that you can just drag-and-drop into your post.  You can zip multiple files into one by left-click selecting with Ctrl and Shift.

Yeah I was a retard and didn't know I could access my old attachments until today so I cleaned house save for a couple things that made me laugh my ass off.

Might I recommend to everyone imgbb for a host, if you're still on imgur don't.

For images I'd definitely recommend using Discord instead. There's no accumulative file size limit like Doomworld but individual attachments have a limit of up to 25 MB in size for free users (sane people). You can just copy and paste the link to the attachment for Doomworld to embed. Just make a server with nobody in it but you and post there and as long as you don't delete images or the server, they'll never go away.

No, you are indeed lazy. Use discord attachments or a filehost if its several megabytes big. Or just zip your folder. Even default zipping with Windows itself is like, what, one click away. So you are basically saying that one click is costing you more effort than clicking on New Thread and typing your OP and clicking again to publish the thread. That's two clicks and a lot of typed words, all of which a single right click and a click on copy to zip would have saved you.

Granted: this is a reddit post and I am indeed "Not sure if this is real", but I do recommend checking out one of the replies that deconstructs the url structure of an embed link. It gives this telephone-game news a bit more believability

You know what, if you have nothing to add, don't make the thread to begin with.

This should be added to the whatever unspoken rules list; first-time posters seem to overlook this often.

I like the system with zips. You also have the accompanying text files with info on the wad you're about to play.
