CasualScrub Posted October 15, 2023 Johnny is a game reviewer who doesn't typically play shooters, especially retro shooters. He mostly reviews RPGs, platformers, etc. Also his only experience with Doom was 2016 and Eternal. So keep these things in mind when watching. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Individualised Posted October 15, 2023 (edited) I wouldn't consider Doom 3 "classic Doom". That would be Doom 1, Doom 2, Final Doom and Doom 64, no? Edited October 15, 2023 by Individualised 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

If we're going by platformer comparisons, 3 is the "Shadow the Hedgehog" of Doom. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

It's also the last game the the series to actually play like a traditional FPS. We certainly don't call it that due to a community agreed clarity of language, but it's unavoidable that someone else would. Edited October 15, 2023 by Edward850 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
CasualScrub Posted October 15, 2023 That's why I placed it among the others as "classic" given its age at this point and its distance in time from the modern games, but I get that I doesn't exactly fit the same criteria for that title that Doom/Doom II do, so I've edited the title to add "older" as well. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Not that surprising given that he doesn't hang in the same retro shooter circles as we do or someone like Trav Guy or Civvie does. But he's still a large enough youtuber that I figure it was worth posting just to get others thoughts given Johnny isn't as familiar with Doom as we would be. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr Masker Posted October 15, 2023 (edited) Oh, I've seen him on YouTube around, one of those ancient YouTubers from back when everyone wanted to be like AVGN and/or was on Screwattack, ThatGuyWithTheGlasses or NormalBoots. Cool to see these people still alive and kicking on YouTube, and not moved to Twitch streaming ooorrr... idk real life jobs or something. A remnant of simpler times... He'll sometimes do reviews for games that he wouldn't otherwise play or review, like game donations. Given John's only experience with Doom up to this point was with the new games, it's not too surprising that he would have more trouble with the older games. His brother, Elliot, who shows up in the video a couple times is much more familiar with shooters than John is. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted October 15, 2023 I have, like Kim Justice, but its been years since I watched content like that to be quite honest. I do remember liking his videos but it wouldn't surprise me if they've turned bad suddenly. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Biodegradable Posted October 16, 2023 Oh cool. I used to watch Johnny years ago, so this is a fun way to revisit his channel. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Better production quality, better researched, etc. This video is just an odd-man out among his regular reviews given the subject matter is not his usual thing so he was going in less familiar than usual. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Although is not that different from his usual stuff, so is so-so. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Steve D Posted October 16, 2023 I thought it was pretty funny. It reminded me of times I watched modern Doomers play the originals and get torn to pieces, then they go running back to 2016 or Eternal and play like gods. Life is so weird. ;D 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
betabox Posted October 16, 2023 Surprised he complained about Doom II having too many enemies and ambushes when that accurately describes the D64 Lost Levels. They're straight up trap and ambush central. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Jerem Posted October 18, 2023 I thought the plot of doom95 was phenomenal, but I was raised on it so that could be an incredibly biased opinion. I've just never heard anyone bash it before. The line "If you don't know what the BFG stands for, ask your dad." is so good. "Hard to mess up a shotgun". Idk. I'd refer you to any game that features limiting the range of a shotgun. So, many many examples. Irl they're incredibly satisfying to watch. I'll refer you to even a shortened barrelled shotgun. I was under the impression almost every mainline money-cow FPS limited shotgun range to <10m. Wasn't aware of the ps1 random access memory limitation but I suppose it makes sense considering the memory cartridges. Good 'ol memory cartridges. Starting maps again from pistol reminds me of how well Serious Sam the Second Encounter handled the game loop. 3 episodes, you start again with your weapons but the collection progression is different each time. Super satisfying. I love how much Johnny mentions asses. He's super right about the level design. There are some massive pitfalls when it comes to directing the player. I could defend it by saying it was a product of it's time but his whole objective of the video is to determine whether or not this is still good for a modern audience. I agree that it's not. There needs to be either a remix of the levels that involves valve style guiding (not linear, i'm talking about lighting and other neat tricks) or there should be a balanced clairvoyance mechanic. I know that Doom Infinite mod had a clairvoyance thing but it's too many steps in the other direction. I'm not a huge fan of doom2 maps. Episode 3 of doom95 is where my heart lies. I'm glad he pointed out that sandy made some absolutely incredible work and level design in the original because it's true. "Cooch kick" is a phrase that might last in my vocabulary now. Thank you for sharing this. Never played lost levels from 64. I'll have to 'em a try. Johnny's description of doom3 being a poor doom and a competent fps is on point. Good video. Charismatic fella. Thanks for sharing! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
CasualScrub Posted October 18, 2023 Glad you enjoyed it! :) I'm a big fan of John, so it was cool to see him cover one of my favorite series. Quote I'd refer you to any game that features limiting the range of a shotgun. Most of the time that's for balancing purposes, especially multiplayer. High close range damage but low range helps to balance them and make shotguns more fair in multiplayer games if you're not going for realism. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
