Ar_e_en Posted October 19, 2023 Sharing is caring! List some people or pieces of media that introduced you to songs, music pieces or musical artists that you ended up liking. I’ll start with mine: 1. Let’s get the obvious one out first: Yes, I found out about “King Crimson” through “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure”… Laugh it up and shut up… Although, I guess I could also say that Joel from Vinesauce (Vargskelethor) was kinda the reason why I found out about “King Crimson” in a weird roundabout way (no pun intended I swear), because he was a JoJo fan who used to talk about it a lot years ago. This was around the time before the english dubs were even a thing. Joel kept mentioning the series, I got curious, I ended up looking it up and found a bunch of references to bands that I already knew as well as some that I didn’t (like “King Crimson”). The name “King Crimson” caught my eye, because it’s a really cool name, and the rest is history! 2. “The Mars Volta”! Special thanks to Vinny from Vinesauce for bringing them up, specifically by placing their songs in some of the older Vinesauce videos. The songs were used during very unnerving moments like the times when Vinny was exploring abandoned 90’s 3D chat rooms. I remember this one really old Vinesauce video where Vinny was driving while it was dark and foggy outside and he used one of the songs from “Octahedron”, for the longest time – I thought that it was a song from “Silent Hill”. Technically – that driving video (which was one of the first Vinesauce videos that I ever saw) was probably the first time that I ever heard a “The Mars Volta” song. 3. There are probably a lot of songs and bands that I found out about from the GTA games, but one that sticks in my mind actually comes from the GTA clone “Sleeping Dogs”. One of the radios in the game was an alternative / indie rock radio station that had the song “Automatic Response” by “Gem and The Deadheads” on it. Whenever I heard that song in the game – I immediately started a police chase in that game, it fits so well as a car chase song! After finishing the game – I checked out some other songs by “Gem and The Deadheads”! 4. The indie-pop musician Jack Stauber was introduced to me by the mod creator of the Deltarune and Isabelle companion mods for GZDOOM: ItsMeVeronica. ItsMeVeronica had a bunch of videos giving sneak peeks into the progress of the companion mods and most of them had Jack Stauber songs (or remixes of his songs) set as background tracks. The songs caught my ears and after watching one shitpost that ItsMeVeronica made where The Joker from the movie “Joker” danced to the Jack Stauber song “OUR” – I checked out the rest of Staubers works! Side note: “Finite Form” is an underrated album… Just saying… 5. A relatively new one: “Sonny Sharrock” was brought to my attention by @Dwars . He started one of his random idgames streams by playing “Many Mansions”, it was enchanting! I’m slowly exploring his wider discography. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Sonikkumania Posted October 19, 2023 (edited) My dad, unironically. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't experienced Doom and other DOS classics, Tarantino, WW2 films and other cool shit I forgot to mention. Also special thanks for my mate for having me play Sonic CD back in 2006. Edited October 19, 2023 by Sonikkumania 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
HeatedChocolate Posted October 19, 2023 1) The Youtuber RebelTaxi (Or Pan-Pizza, I've seen it both ways) has introduced me to a lot of music I enjoy. Off the top of my head these are Talkshow Boy, Australian guy who has music that ranges from "My god this is the best song I've ever heard! (Subjective)" (Freaky Teen Fashion), "This is just a whiny love song why am I listening to this?" (Ice Police vs. Love Doctors) and "Computer seizure" (Three Cheers for that Fucking Dickhead Adrian). I consider it comfort music, he is also shockingly still alive and making music. DottiR, the one I've listened to the least. Collaboration between M. Dot Strange and ÝRÝ, so far I've only listened to their tracks Twang and Atonal Atomic Blues, but I do quite like what I've heard so far. Zombi Zoba, which is just head-pounding noise but, hey, I like it somehow. 2) Funnily enough, MyHouse.wad got me listening to the Most Mysterious Song on the Internet. 3) Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain got me into a lot of people from the 80s. Billy Idol, Ultravox, that sorta deal. 4) The game HighFleet got me into Turjan Aylahn's off-kilter discordant style of music, especially Tanc a Lelek. The two are inseparable in my mind. 5) Finally, a whole load of sources have gotten me to listen to the Warsaw Philharmonic. Ranging from Anime (Hellsing Ultimate, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) to plane games (Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War), they do really good stuff and I'm always glad to hear them in media I enjoy. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted October 19, 2023 (edited) I learned about Ethel Cain when one of her songs was used as the closing theme of a true crime podcast I listen to a lot. I'd heard of her before but that's a little outside my usual genre. After hearing that, I was enthralled. GTA: San Andreas was my initial introduction to Faith no More, one of my all time favorite bands. Edited October 19, 2023 by LadyMistDragon 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
DankMetal Posted October 19, 2023 Shout out to my dad for introducing me to the best extreme metal music from the 80's and 90's. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Bucket Posted October 20, 2023 Pandora used to be good for this. That app had a unique algorithm that pointed me to some bands I wouldn't have found otherwise. It's a shame they pivoted so hard to copying Spotify and iTunes. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
mrthejoshmon Posted October 20, 2023 Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes was an absolute stinker but it did introduce me to the band Static X, so thanks for that. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Panzermann11 Posted October 20, 2023 (edited) True Crime: New York City was where I first heard Across 110th Street by Bobby Womack as also heard in Jackie Brown and American Gangster. That game is also where "GET THAT MOTHERFUCKER!" and "FUCK HIM UP!" heard in Team Fabolous and to an extent, SuperMarioGlitchy4's videos came from. Rudolph Posted October 20, 2023 (edited) Dan Olson's The Nostalgia Critic and The Wall got me to truly appreciate Pink Floyd and explore its discography beyond Dark Side of the Moon and "Another Brick In The Wall: Part II". Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance introduced me to KMFDM. Le Joueur du grenier (essentially the Angry Video Game Nerd's French counterpart) introduced me to Seiji Yokoyama's phenomenal Saint Seiya soundtrack. Garlichead Posted October 21, 2023 (edited) 12 hours ago, Mr. Freeze said: Millennials like me who got into punk first heard it here Indeed, I discovered lots of music while playing the Tony Hawk, and the Street Skater games during my early teens. I think most of my musical tastes developed during my college years, back then a lot of my friends where into discovering music through blogs and apps such as Soul Seek and torrents. I got into proggresive rock and electronic music during that time. While i dont listen to prog rock very often, I think it had an effect on my taste in music; or at least in getting me exposed to eclectic stuff that you wouldnt normally listen on mainstream local radio back in the late 90s, early 2000s. Nowadays, most of my music discovery takes place through the radio. Some of these shows may be a little too local for the international community of Doomworld, so i will mention those that have higher internet presence or have podcasts available. 1. https://amplifyradio.com/programa-registros/: It is 50% world music, 50% other music genres (a little bit of everything). I like it as they explain the context in which genres emerged and their influence on other artists. 2. Songmess: latin american radio show focused on contemporary music from the region. Nice interviews. 3. https://www.ivoox.com/podcast-latido-america_sq_f150658_1.html: radio show focused on key figures from the latin american scene. Good mix between classics, and modern stuff. There are some international radio stations i like as well: 1. https://somafm.com/: lots of diferent stations on their catalogue. While they mostly focus on electronic music, they also have some folk, jazz and pop channels. My favorite being probably Secret Agent, a mix of jazz, exotica and afrobeat. 2. https://www.kexp.org/: public station from Seattle. They have several shows and podcast, i specially like their Live on KEXP series. 3. https://www.nts.live/: a couple of different streams to chose from. I mostly like it for their collection of world music, but they have a huge variety of shows. Normally listen to it when i am not in the mood for anything in particular; while i dont always enjoy the selection i have found lots of cool music i wouldnt have found in other ways. Lila Feuer Posted October 21, 2023 https://twitter.com/bootyslime?lang=enhttps://barbatus.neocities.org/ This person, whom I met back in 2007 on a (THE) Manhunt forum (before it took a shit and died in 2019) who went by the name of Knick Knack back then (and was also a regular IIRC in the Silent Hill communities at the time) is the reason I am into the kinda music I fuck with since (Dark EBM, Aggrotech and Electro-Industrial, examples: Alien Vampires, Velvet Acid Christ, Feindflug, Hocico, Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy, :wumpscut:) I was able to briefly reunite with them at the tail-end of June 2020 when I scoured the internet looking for them, and really a big motivator for that is because I was a total fucking shit to them over something super petty and patently ridiculous (I was like 18 at the time, which still isn't an excuse) and it's very ironic considering they effectively changed my life for the better and we had a good laugh as it was in their words "water under the bridge" by that point. Cool person, glad to see they're still around doing their thing. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Some extra Vinesauce music recommendations that I can think of: Revscarecrow introduced me to "King Diamond", thanks to his bizarre puppet video; Imakuni introduced me to the "Gitaroo Man" soundtrack (as well as some obscure Sonic The Hedgehog songs that I have never heard of) Limealicious introduced me to the song "One (Is The Loneliest Number)" by "Three Dog Night", and She also introduced me to the "Enormous Penis" song by "Da Vinci's Notebook" 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Amaruψ Posted October 22, 2023 Battlefield Vietnam essentially introduced me to Rock'n roll in general. Looking up at DOOM's musical "inspirations", I discovered Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, etc. Essentially, almost every essential grunge and metal sound I discovered, was discovered through DOOM. Alice in Chains is quite the funny one. You'd think it would be DOOM, but no. I discovered them through Black Hawk Down (2004), because one of the scenes have "Right Turn" playing quietly in the background, and I quite liked it. Vice City and San Andreas also were the open gates to a plethora of great music. Quake made me a princess for Nine Inch Nails. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
kaleb. Posted October 22, 2023 (edited) Midnight Club 3 as a young 8 year old introduced me to Drum and Bass and now it's my favorite genre of music (and Midnight Club 3 is still my favorite racing game of all time too) Edited October 22, 2023 by kaleb. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
QuaketallicA Posted October 22, 2023 Doom. Thank you Bobby Prince for not-so-subtly ripping off Metallica, AC/DC, and Pantera. The Doom OST is largely responsible for my becoming a metalhead. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ebrl Posted October 22, 2023 Not something I really listen to regularly and I also wouldn't go as far as calling it "some good music" but I think I should mention that one time my boss introduced me to Nuclear Assault because in hindsight that was funny as hell and completely out of character 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Later - Joel was a part of a charity stream that also featured Hot Dad as a guest, and after both the charity stream and the release of Joels "Skeleton Metal X" album (which featured Hot Dad as a guest vocalist) - I checked out some of Hot Dads stuff. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
