Are other/alternative types of music files usable in BOOM?

MrBlaskovitz

Question

I've been working on some maps and I just wanted to ask if I can use some cool tracks I found off of The MOD Archive?
The file types are mostly .MX, .MOD and .S3M
Can I use these files in my WAD? (Are They BOOM compatible?)

Thanks! :3

Tracker modules work in most if not all currently maintained source ports apart from Chocolate Doom, including:

GZDoom, DSDA-Doom, Woof, Crispy Doom, Eternity, EDGE Classic, and Doom Retro.

They aren't "purely Boom compatible" in that they won't work in DOS boom.exe. So as long as you don't care about that, go ahead.

I think they they were asking about the legality and morality of it, no?

Like, these are someone else's works, can i just use them for my own projects? That kinda question

I assumed by "Are They BOOM compatible?" the question was of a technical nature.

You do bring up a very good point though, which is that you should at make some effort to see if the module creator would be OK with you using their thing in a map, or at the very least, ensure they haven't specifically forbidden it. Not so easy to do with old tracks though. My personal view is that as long as you're crediting them and not editing the module at all (except for possibly fixing it to loop properly, and indicating that you've done so), it should generally be OK for a Doom map.

The Mod archive has a section on using tracks from there in your own projects, but it's not overly helpful.

Can I use a module of modarchive.org in my game/application/etc...?

If the module in question has license deeds attributed to it, please refer to those.

Otherwise, the only way to be genuinely fair to the artist who's music you want to use is to contact them and get their permission. We can't grant permissions on their behalf. Period.

I can't get in contact with an artist who's music I want to use, what now?

It's up to you how you proceed. We will not condone illegal use of someone's works, but if you still wish to continue to use that particular piece of music in your project, then you take on those risks yourself.

If your project is small and free (non commercial) then it's wise to give clear and concise due credit to the artist in your production.

Where can I find the license attribution information on a module?

Look on a module's information page, there is a section dedicated to the License Attribution information.

(The licence information is usually unhelpful for this use case unfortunately, as it usually just refers you to the Mod Archive Distribution Licence.)

To answer to this,

All of the tracks I typically use are either very very old, I don't know who the creator is or the creator is not anywhere on the internet at all.
But to put it simply, If I know who it is, I always credit them.
