DSC Posted October 21, 2023 Not too long ago I heard some guy expressing some really weird views that didn't sit right with me. Now, the whole thing could have ended right there if it was just some random dumbass from the internet. Thing is though, it wasn't some dumb online remark made by a nobody: it was a whole freaking book written by a guy with a degree in philosophy. I first saw that book on sale in a local bookstore, but some time later I even saw it being advertised on my country's TV channel dedicated to the arts and culture. At the time it made me doubt myself... I thought what he was preaching to be pure bollocks, but what authority does a dumbass college kid have compared to a fucking actual philosopher? However, discussing this matter with some friends, I came to my senses and realized everyone is human, including academics and intellectuals. I've since learned about how a degree doesn't necessarily mean that everything the person holding it says is of any value. I even remembered a previous discussion I had where the exact same shit happened, with tons of people pointing that out as well. I like to point to this particular comment by Doomkid, I think he does an excellent job explaining it overall: https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/131439-a-response-to-arturos-statements/?tab=comments#comment-2546371. But anyways, this left me wondering... What kind of absolute absurd nonsense has been said by those individuals over the years? I already came across samples of said idiocy, but I can only imagine how its just a fraction of a fraction compared to the whole iceberg. And that is where the purpose of this thread comes in. I'm very interested in knowing about any cases of academics, doctorates, highly-educated and intellectual people saying stupid things that you personally know about. If you have any interesting example to share, feel free to do so! Oh, and just before I go, I figured I might as well contribute some examples to the discussion myself. I find the so-called cases of "Nobel disease" incredibly fascinating: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_disease 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Amaruψ Posted October 21, 2023 (edited) From where I hail from, consumption of misinformation from the social media is quite a commonplace occurrence here, so quite a few people, even the ones who're educated, are gullible enough to fall for the "Did You Know?" sort of "facts" channels on the social media, where the compilation of the facts is more than often, 99% of the times wrong. I would consider my father to fall within the educated category. By profession, he's a literature teacher. Quite a humble person indeed. A few memorable instances of my father parroting something absurdly incorrect that he heard on some sort of a "Did You Know?" channel includes: Michael Jackson took pride in considering himself to be the God, and thus wanted to be immortal. This is the reason that he went under numerous plastic surgeries and wore gloves, this is because he didn't want to catch my diseases that might end up being fatal to him. Bill Gates is responsible for the COVID-19 outbreak. He did so that he can sell the only vaccine that he owns. Johnson Baby products, such as their baby oil and baby powder contained microchips and were sold en mass to poor countries. Now they're being activated after all these years, and causing the COVID-19. Edited October 21, 2023 by Amaruψ 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
june gloom Posted October 21, 2023 My mother was one of the smartest, classiest people I ever met. She fought hard to make sure her students had the best education they could have. She would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. She was also a paranoid fundie weirdo who said shit like "evolution was invented by communists to destroy God." 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

Hellektronic Posted October 22, 2023 (edited) For me, it's usually things related to political matters and pointing out "fallacies" in arguments about controversial things. Someone who enjoys arguing will literally say anything to hold the high ground, especially the dreaded social justice warrior types. Me? I'm apolitical, I don't give a shit. I'm politically incorrect. But somehow they've once or twice managed to rope me into one of these arguments, and they end up more or less shaming you for being what you are. I think that's completely stupid and morally corrupt, because they're really no better than anybody else, but they'll always go that direction. Like you're the simple minded idiot in some complex world that only they truly understand. In reality, it's usually a very simple concept to grasp. There's a common misconception that education is synonymous with intelligence, as you're come to realize. While I personally don't hold the results of an IQ test in much value, the notion of "IQ" in the abstract sense has some merit. That each of us has a potential for intelligence, the capability to reason, to understand, to make connections, to solve problems, etc. Education merely makes one more educated, i.e. well-versed in the existing literature of your field of expertise. Education is a tool, but if the craftsman has no vision for his statue, all the tools in the world will do no good. Intelligence is not merely education, what one has learned, but also the innate abilities to reason, to use that knowledge. Zulk RS Posted October 22, 2023 Not sure if this counts but... When I was still a kid ( I think I was like 10 or 11 at the time) in school, I was in English class. I should mention for context that English is not our first language. Anyway, we were reading a chapter in our book that was meant to help us learn English. It had something like "Rob sat down to eat with his family. For dinner there was rice, fish, chicken, beans, lentils and potatoes". At the time, I did not know what lentils were. So I asked my teacher what lentils meant. He told me "Lentils means lantern." 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

lafoxxx Posted October 22, 2023 (edited) Many people just use their knowledge and position of being educated as an excuse to say stupid things on purpose (like trolling) -- and you won't prove anything because you're not as educated as they are. And just when you've educated enough yourself to be able to contradict their statement, they come up with something else. I can't remember the quotes at the moment possibly because they upset me. Pretty sure you can look them up online. Edited October 22, 2023 by lafoxxx 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Panzermann11 Posted October 25, 2023 (edited) I used to sometimes hear that "the human eye can't see past 30/60 FPS" and similar claims in video game discussion. As someone who has spent plenty of time playing games in more than 60 FPS, I can say for sure that this statement is completely idiotic and invalid. I had my monitor set to 165hz and I noticed my cursor moves more smoothly than in 60hz. I also played Skyrim in 100+ FPS and I can notice some of the movement feeling a little more smoother and some ghosting on the compass and markers than in 60 FPS. Yes, the difference between 60 FPS and 165+ FPS is there, but it's more subtle than 30 FPS versus 60 FPS. Edited October 25, 2023 by Panzermann11 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
durian Posted October 25, 2023 I'm an academic and I say dumb shit all the time. One thing worth bearing in mind about academics: we're specialists, not generalists. Our expertise is typically limited to a teeny tiny sub-field of our subject. When we stay in our very narrow lanes, our comments will (hopefully) be well informed and properly thought through, but don't expect that to hold when we step out of our lanes - we're just as prone to ignorance and error as everyone else. Also, degree in philosophy ≠ actual philosopher. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

I've found that the Blur Busters UFO Test usually succeeds in shutting these fools up. Alternatively, if you're feeling mean, you can show them how to set their refresh rate to 24Hz "for that authentic cinematic experience". That works too. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Let's say, hypothetically, that I actually had a point to make. ----------------------------------------------------------- Anyways, my first job was in tech support, my second one was working for one of the world's biggest corporations and the last few ones have been retail. I've heard stupid things every single day for the past few years. Not really something that was said, but something stupid that I have witnessed was while working in tech support. Some dude was trying to change his password but because he was on his personal computer I couldn't connect remotely to his PC to oversee him. He tried for 2 hours and 40 minutes and failed every single time despite me repeating every single step every time. It got to the point where the whole office gathered around me to hear the call, and eventually I got clearance from really high up to just connect to his PC anyway and see what's causing the issue because the dude had no other options. The problem was that he was a dumbass. I kept saying 14 characters minimum as a requirement for the password, but somehow, in some absurd logic, that meant for him 7 characters for the password field and 7 characters for the confirm password field. I wish I was joking. I've never witnessed anything that absurd, this was just too insane. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Halfblind Posted October 26, 2023 Some doctors that I know think that stress causes stomach ulcers. The CDC, however, released a statement a few years ago that said Helicobacter Pylori causes 85% of stomach ulcers and 90% of duodenal ulcers. Most doctors think that leaky gut (intestinal permeability) and candida overgrowth doesn't exist. The CDC, on the other hand, stated in a report over a decade ago that said that candidiasis has been linked to several deaths. Doctors refuse to treat autistic children for clostridium difficile (C-Diff) when it is proven that they are most at risk for developing that infection. It may not be the smoking gun for autism, but if the autistic person has the infection treating it would make them feel better and help them live a better life. Most doctors think that Gilbert's syndrome, a genetic disorder, is a benign condition. I have this and it is definitely not benign. Most doctors are also not concerned about the dangers of toxic mold exposure. Tell this to anyone who renovates homes for a living, and they will tell you otherwise. Most dentists think that those metal (amalgam) fillings, which contain over 50% mercury are harmless, but OSHA has released several statements that say otherwise. I only know this shit because I have an 'amalgam' filling, Gilbert's syndrome, dealing with an H. Pylori infection, have been exposed to toxic mold, and currently have candida overgrowth. Trust me none of this makes life easy and healthy. Also, this makes trusting in the system and alternative medicine not worth the effort. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
