Tell us more!

I haven't read it yet. I just got it. It documents the history of John Romero's life.

If it doesn't have drawings like this in it I'm not interested.

I'm certainly planning to read it. I'm just waiting for a paperback version to become available. The last time I was impatient with that kind of situation with a book I wanted and the paperback version came out about two weeks after I relented and bought the hardcover.

Brenda told me that there are a lot of things regarding the development of Sigil in there, so that's pretty interesting, considering the development of Sigil is a little on the mysterious side.

Damn, I looked up John Romero's Wikipedia page and apparently he got divorced three times! :o

Also, it is said that his book confirms that Blackroom has indeed been cancelled. What an odd way to make such announcement.

In retrospect, "I'm going to make you my bitch" probably wasn't a great wedding vow.

Well this has been long suspected already. It did spawn a great inside joke between me and my friend though. "100% classic FPS game design." Because he'd keep referring to it as the big selling point in online streams during the supposed development (this would've been around the time it had appeared Adrian Carmack was brought onboard.) You have to remember, there was no such thing as a retro fps renaissance at the time of BLACKROOM, but I'm sure he's happy to see the genre he helped put on the map came swinging back in a big way eventually.

Not really, a book gives the opportunity and space to channel someone's thoughts and feelings and allows someone to speak

more freely and openly about things that in professional or daily life would come with a lot more pressure.

Actually, there was: STRAFE (remember that game?) was an online sensation, Brutal Doom had gotten mainstream attention, work on DUSK had already started, Shadow Warrior 2013 and Wolfenstein: The New Order had come out a couple years earlier and Doom 2016 was well on its way.

It might have not reached its apogee (haha) yet, but it had already started.

Shadow Warrior 2013 fared the best and was similar to what Doom 2016 would be. I would say the most authentic was ROTT 2013 but uh yeah, the less said about that one the better. STRAFE was blatant false advertising but a perfectly fine roguelite, and Brutal Doom was a mod for an old game that most outside of this community had moved on from.

It was a dark time, I remember buying Intrude because it looked cute, very Wolf3D-esque but dear goth was it boring. I personally think we were headed in the right direction for boomer shooters when DUSK showed up. Most other so-called retro throwback shooters couldn't be assed to fkn do proper pixel art and instead went with a minecraft aesthetic. I know not everybody can be Cage, but damn it sucked for a while.

There was also Wrack in 2014, with its semi-original Bobby Prince soundtrack.

I forget that was even a thing or that it somehow procured a sequel. Wrack was wack, so unbearably bland it's hard to believe the guy behind Skulltag made it.

Well, either way, my point is that the whole retro-shooter renaissance was already on its way and it might have influenced John Romero to come up with Blackroom. Too bad, that one did not happen; at the very least, I would have been curious to check out the demo.
