maxmanium Posted October 22, 2023 Does anyone know where to find an SC-88 soundfont? I've been using RLNDGM.SF2 for quite a while now, and I like the majority of it, but sometimes some instruments sound a little weird, e.g. NOVA3 MAP32. I noticed in MtPain's videos, one of his viewers provides the midis recorded off of an SC-88, and it seems to fix what I'm talking about, but I can't seem to find one online. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Idk, as a zoomer slacker, i'm too lazy to go search that in the wiki and see if the mapmaker actually did the midi, or if it was ripped from another place. In case it was taken from another source, try and search the potential sequencer of the midi. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted October 25, 2023 What you're hearing in those videos is an SC-88 in SC-55 mode, some of these soundfonts should get you pretty close, particularly the smallest of the EmpGrieferus ones: https://archive.org/details/sc-55-roland-25-gm-soundfonts 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

How did you know that's what it is? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted November 4, 2023 DCG Retrowave used his SC-88 to provide the music for a number of MtPain’s videos, I only know due to talking to each of them about it some time a couple years ago. I have an SC-88 myself and can confirm it sounds damn near identical to that soundfont when in 55 mode! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
LuciferSam86 Posted November 4, 2023 (edited) Not cheap at all , I paid something like 80 dollars and it requires an internet connection every month : https://www.roland.com/it/products/rc_sound_canvas_va/ It's a VSTi module that emulates the 55, 88, 88Pro and the 8820 , not like the real hardware but still pretty decent imho better than soundfonts. You'll need then of a virtual midi cable ( some are free) and a program like Falcosoft Midi Player which is free. windows only. ps : I could take the midi and render it and put on YouTube, so you can check it. SyntherAugustus Posted November 5, 2023 Sound Canvas VA is definitely the cleanest option for SC-55 style sound. Thanks for mentioning FalcoSoft. I used to use Studio One or FL Studio for using SCVA and this is a much easier option. If you want to use the FluidSynth method, I personally like Live HQ Natural Soundfont GM. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ludicrous_peridot Posted November 25, 2023 Something I noticed at the archive page - SC-55 Deemster (the one that comes with GZDoom) Really? Has that been bundled with GZ? I have been replacing that with the one from deemster's Vogons thread, and always though I heard a difference; was I a fool? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Li'l devil Posted November 25, 2023 I suppose out of SC-55 EmperorGrieferus fonts the largest one is the better one? Or it doesn't work that way? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gibbitudinous Posted November 25, 2023 Of the various soundfonts I've used, I find the Hyper-VSC one to sound the most reliably good. I believe it's based on a combination of Hypercanvas and Virtual Sound Canvas samples (hence the name), so not directly based on the SC-55 or 88 but closely related, and in my opinion more natural-sounding without being remotely as bloated as many other soundfonts that specifically aim at sounding natural. https://soundfonts.kor.ninja/?dir=other stuff 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DoomGater Posted December 3, 2023 Just by the way and maybe a little bit off topic: did you know, that Roland used a special algorithm to store samples in best possible quality sacrificing as little as possible memory space? RDAC (Roland Digital Audio Codec) works similar to Frauenhofer's MP3. But basically ALL Sound Canvas (and by the way, the JV series , too) are using only 8-Bit-resolution. :-O 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lippeth Posted December 3, 2023 This thread reminded me to look for a decent SC-88 on ebay, and I just found one at a great price from the same seller I got the SC-55mkII from a few years ago. Thanks for the reminder! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
