Imagine being just another member of the faceless rank and file personnel working in one of the facilities on the UAC outposts on Phobos and Deimos during the Demon Invasion. You are not Doomguy, and you do not have 200HP and 200 armour with the ability to stow multiple weapons at once. Forget the official canon and when the DOOM II Monsters were first introduced; just imagine that every denizen of Hell comes out to play. You are merely a frail human being and the rules of real life physics apply to you. One little mistake and you are demon food! Out of all the bestiary in DOOM II, which do you think would be the most terrifying to encounter in real life? How much of a threat or a problem would they present tactically? Consider not only the monster's toughness or destructive power, but also their mobility and their numbers.

The Cyberdemon or the Arch-vile would be rather tempting for their obvious attributes. What about the floating enemies though? Having given this some serious thought, I think that I personally would have to consider the Caco and the Pain Elemental to likely be the biggest problems in this fictional scenario. At any moment there could be a giant tomato or meatball with big sharp teeth floating right above you, ready to bite off your head. Even worse, the Caco and the Pain Elemental would likely behave like real predators do...silently stalking their prey until they are in position to strike, only belching ball lightning or Lost Souls if they lose the element of surprise and are forced into a pursuit hunt. It would be very difficult to mitigate against attacks from creatures like this, there are just so many different angles that they could come at you from in a real life setting. Then again, a Cyberdemon could simply burst through concrete walls or blast them open with their missile pod, so there's that problem too. I still haven't forgotten how terrible that the Mancubi, Revenants and Barons would be. Even still, I think I am going with Cacos and Painos as my most dangerous. My choice for the psychological factor of intimidation? That is a much more difficult one for me...I think all of the heavyweights look terrifying ( if that makes sense to you ). If I am forced to pick only one, maybe the Cyberdemon or the Baron ( for their looks and awakening sound ). Those Pinky Demons look pretty freaky themselves even though they aren't particularly dangerous in the game.

For the second question, would the icon of sin not be an "all of the above" answer? (well, mostly since some monsters can't be spawned)

Spider Mastermind would pose the biggest threat to survival in real life; imagine getting torn to shreds (no-one can outrun bullets).

I would be scared personally by the Arch-Vile, but its attack has a counter (ducking behind walls). I'm not likely to survive, but there is a way to.

I had a nightmare of the D3 pinky knowing where I was and chasing me in cramped dark corridors years ago, I feel it would be by far the most frightening monster because of its size, speed and strength but it's not so big as to get stuck or caught on things.

Mort dangerous however? Well the bosses are on point. They'd be nearly impossible to stop, let alone bring down. Even in cover you would eventually be killed as they could just destroy it. They may also be more inclined to just pin and crush you underneath their leg/hoof so you may not even get a quick and relatively painless death by rocket or giant minigun fire.

Bruiser, just something about it fucks me up man, the weird monitor face, the fleshy eye it shows when it sees you and the massive lumbering stomps it does as it pounds towards you.

Genuine pants shitter.

I would be frightened enough if a single zombie showed up in the news wielding a gun cause that means there's more of them out there. From there on I wouldn't even have the sense to measure my levels of scared to death, cause I would be very fucking scared.

For the second poll, I don't think there would exist more than one cyberdemon or spiderdemon or icon of sin, so while all of those would represent a massive worldwide problem on their own, I could see the fliers being very difficult or untouchable forces en masse. I'm thinking of creatures that, in the game, typically do better at evading confrontation at given times, indirectly or not, and cacodemons and pain elementals are some of them. In this I leave out lost souls because I can imagine exploiting its IQ to have them circling the earth for an eternity. But also zombies with guns dude... idk

To me, the ArchVile, for the simple fact it can raise the people it kills from the death and create an army of zombies/possessed former humans (the Doom zombies are just possessed humans so that should be doable), I didn't vote the Icon of Sin because I didn't notice it on the poll at first, plus now I feel it would be kind of cheating to pick the final boss of the game so... yeah, to me, the ArchVile, as far it being scary, it fits too, outside of the obvious threat factor of being immolated and turned into a servant of evil itself, it's also this uncanny, lanky, tall, nude, bald humanoid creature, you just need to look up something like the Shy Guy SCP or The Rake creepypasta to see what I mean on that on itself being scary, all in all, most enemies would be scary or threatening, but to me, the ArchVile takes the cake as it can grow an army on top of it's current threat.

quick edit, one other reason is that the Cyberdemon, Mastermind, etc are too big to fit in most urban buildings while an ArchVile can possibly break inside a few, or just send it's zombies to do it's bidding.

The scariest by far would be the archvile, just imagine going about your day and then seeing an archvile resurrecting that neighbor or family member that you really didn't like for the sheer purpose of killing you. I mean the spectacle of seeing something raise the dead would be enough to don the brown trousers.

The second is tougher but aerial threat seems to be the bigger issue in reality.

My vote for scariest would be the humble zawmbiemen because zombies with guns and the understanding of how to use them is a terrifying scenario.

Greatest threat to survival I went for the icon for obvious reasons. Assuming tho that it can move and it being a literal wall in the original games was just due to tech limitations of the day. If it can't move, then I guess I'm back on the zombies with guns thing.

The scariest is the Arch-vile. Just listen to 'em charge up.....

The most dangerous would probably be the Cyberdemon though, being that those rockets just fire so goddamn fast. Maybe flyers could be dangerous too, but maybe not so much if the right approach is adopted.

Well, it was identified in the plot as being the actual source of the invasion even though it couldn't move in the original canon ( mentions of flailing limbs notwithstanding ). And yeah, I'm sure the devs realized that having him spawn Cyberdemons and Masterminds would have broken the game.

The gun itself even sort of looks like one of those 30mm rotary cannons that are famously used by the A-10 Thunderbolt even though the game has their weapon behaving more like the zombie sergeant's shotgun in full auto mode. They would be a beast.

We're talking about the monsters as they were in Classic DOOM, not DOOM 3. When I said the thing about "forgetting established canon", I actually meant to imagine Ultimate DOOM with all the monsters from DOOM II being present on the moon bases as well. That's what I was getting at.

That was DOOM 3, this thread is about classic DOOM.

Possessed zombies could theoretically pose a very significant threat indeed if they retained all of the host's memories and used them to their advantage. They would be like the Pod People from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." This would be terrifying and deadly in and of itself.

The Archie would have been my next choice for most dangerous overall ( that is, Question #2 ). At least he can't fly though ( that's good ). Uh oh...I may have just given the slaughter modders an idea. Oops.

Yup, we're talking about Icon of Sin 1.0...so the Zombiemen it is.

Zombies usually come in packs so if i saw one i would be pretty fckn scared and theyre zombies who know how to use a firearm so. BUT theyre basically just ppl with some guns and it only takes a few bullets to take em down so they wouldnt be that bad if i had some armor and a gun
but the most scary would prob be a spider demon or a archvile spider demon is a gigantic brain spider with a chaingun and the archvile can literally light people on fire and REVIVE theyre fellow demons a cyberdemon prob wouldnt be that bad cus i can dodge the cyberdemon you cant dodge a archie or a spiderdemon unless u hide behind cover.

the mancubus i could prob just throw a big mac or sumn at em and shoot em while they snackin
the pinkie is basically a gigantic dog so they shouldnt be too hard (ik theyre pigs)
baron/hellknight is prob the easiest since u can just dodge em

the icon of sin is kinda ehh if we go by doom2 icon of sin its just a wall that spits out monsters and altho that is scared just throw some rockets into its brain (romero)

Any of these are scary and highly lethal to a disarmed people.

But yeah, archvile.

Not constrained to zig zagging pathing and the inability to use stairs and the like, that thing is intelligent,

can zap AND explode via line of sight and raise the dead?

That thing could hole down somewhere and blast entire swathes of people by looking through a slit or something.

It's also very fast and relatively resilient.

Edit: You forgot the revenant for option 1.

Scary too. Homing projectiles vs regular folk? Pretty devastating. They have infinite range too, right?

I'd go with the demon being the most terrifying to see in real life. While the others have projectiles to throw around and all that fancy things, they're at least slow enough to outrun.

You literally CAN'T under ANY circumstance outrun demon in real life on your feet. Not everyone runs at 90 mph like Doomguy does.

Fixed now. I'm glad you caught that for me. I would be remiss to forget the Revy's inclusion for a question like that.
