SLADE is corrupting the preview display, what's going on?

This had happened very recently. I was using an out of date SLADE but I got the latest release and it's doing the same thing there as well, only it's much more seizure inducing. This has effectively halted work on my modding until a solution is reached which suffice to say is incredibly unfortunate. Here's my specs: Acer Nitro AN515-55 laptop, Intel Core i5-10300H, 2.50GHz, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, 64-bit OS, Windows 10 Home.

Any help is very much appreciated.

I have roughly the same thing happening on my laptop, and unlike the example above, I unfortunately have not been able to solve the problem for the laptop. As far as I remember I have an integrated intel uhd graphics 650 (or another 600 series). All drivers I could find didn't solve the problem, I just can't work with SLADE on my laptop.

Well that's hot garbage, I suppose not all's completely lost unless I have to mess with sprite offsets again but modifying the PLAYPAL is fucked, it'll mean if I want to view things I have to extract all the graphics manually and view them outside of SLADE, which is what I was going to do with some things anyway regarding brightmap creations and editing. The really crucial part is the coding which is perfectly doable and is the guts of this operation anyway.

But uh yeah.

This might be massively overkill, but maybe it's possible to perhaps use something like a very small virtual machine for both @Lila Feuer and @DRON12261?

I'm not super knowledgeable on VMs but if using Slade is absolutely essential, it could be an option?

@CravenCoyote That's outside the realm of necessity for me, if anything if I can't solve the problem with SLADE then I would prefer an alternative to it to hold me over but afaik there isn't one and XWE is grotesquely outdated (and apparently has a wonderful side effect of randomly corrupting your files) and I don't think it even has a palette editor? Haven't used it since 2012.

Unless the VM was to run an alternative OS like Linux, there's little point in setting one up for a use case like this. It might be a workaround for the visual glitching, but beyond that, I don't see that workaround making much sense when it's going to take up an additional 20GB of disk space at a bare minimum.

Until there's a solution I will just grit my teeth, I realize I can use an unmodified PLAYPAL image as a reference, the menu for tweaking things still works, I can probably still see my offsets because it traces a shadow where the original position was behind it, and the rest is just code and, lord forbid extract graphics to a folder for a reference of frames in code and when I do any editing it'll be outside of SLADE anyway, it'll just be annoying not having a preview in the program. Thanks anyway everyone.

Yep, hence "massively overkill" and might be ideal for only if "using Slade is absolutely essential"

  • 3 weeks later...

I don't know how useful this information will be for anyone but thought I'd share my experience.

SLADE's preview display is working again on the laptop...when plugging in an external monitor.

This leads me to believe it's something on the laptop's display end. Which doesn't really make any sense because it should be a driver related issue and not matter what you're using to display, be it natively or externally, but yeah for anyone who's laptop decided it wants to be a shit with this program and doesn't have alternatives (i.e desktop tower), try hooking up another monitor and seeing if that resolves your issue or not.

Given another person had this problem with integrated graphics and for you external monitor works, leads me to believe the corruption does not happen with discrete graphics card (your laptop likely has one driving the external display).

If so, you can force Slade to use discrete graphics by adding a profile for it under System - Display - Graphics settings in Windows.

Add Slade.exe there and choose max performance.

That's the PLAYPAL, which I used to demonstrate how worthless it is to edit when you can't even tell what you're doing with the visual corruption.

So it should appear like this?

Spoiler

That's really weird, it's very very buggy. Does this happen in all modes? Hope you can find a fix soon.

Yep, anything with a display in SLADE was garbled nonsense on the laptop screen, and I already did! Hooked it up to a monitor and everything's a-okay.

So yeah I hope this fixes whoever may be having trouble with it, spread the word to the ZDoom folks and what not.
