Death Bear Posted November 1, 2023 (edited) Folks, it’s that time of the year! With Doom’s Dirty Thirty quickly approaching, I decided it was time to get festive at the Pineapple Under the Sea. So, admittedly, our long-planned sequel to a certain Hellish event got the boot (for now), and we’re going to have another birthday bash! (This time, not for ourselves). Since this game is 30, flirty and thriving, with a community that’s (as the kids are saying these days) “bussin”...it’s time to dust off the DOOM.wad here at the HQ and get to mapping! I welcome you to D-30. We continue PUSS Series Seres IV with a tribute to the classics. This is the closest thing you’re getting to a “Doom the Way PUSS Did” or “PUSS the Way iD Would’ve Wanted Us to Speedmap It” or “Knee-Deep in the PUSS” or what-tf-ever. We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, or necessarily freshen up the iwads, here. Now, the only thing that’s missing… is YOU. Come get some D with us! (Doom. I mean Doom. What am I, 8 years old?) PLEASE READ ALL RULES AND MAPPING GUIDELINES iWad: DOOM.wad (I’m assuming most of us play off the Ultimate Doom, but I likely won’t be using the fourth episode). Format/ Target: Doom (Doom format). Limit-Removing. Make sure it runs in Crispy, and hopefully we can get it to work in most everything else, too. Difficulty Settings: Yes, please! I will do them arbitrarily if you don’t. Co-Op/ Multiplayer: Please keep in mind Co-op gameplay, and make sure to put in starts and check for soft-locks. Extra stuff for co-op would also be nice. Deathmatch starts are not required. I’m arbitrarily adding co-op starts if you don’t. Pistol-Start/ Continuous: Balance for a pistol-start, but I would suggest dropping some health packs or something at the end for continuous players. Build Time Limit: Nope. Not this time. But our deadline is pretty solid. So, if you want to “speedmap” it, that’s fine. Either way, you’ve got a limited time. Classic Theming: We’re going for Knee-Deep in the Dead, Shores of Hell, and Inferno vibes. It should feel close to the originals. Your style is more modern? That’s okay. Keep it close, both in gameplay and texture palette. Mostly incidental combat. Mostly non-linear layouts. Some secrets. Consider what DTWID…did. Homage or remakes are great. Inspired by something like Switcheroom? Cool. I’m sure we won’t be able to appease everyone, but you know…let’s try to keep it classic-ish? Bonus points if you stick to old naming conventions…but I suppose that’s optional. Boss Monsters/ Levels: Please limit the boss monsters in general map usage. If you want to make a boss map, fine, but if we have several, I’ll have to rearrange accordingly. Monster Count Limit: 200. This is rounding up from UV for the first three iwad episodes. Lots are below 100. No Slaughter maps, this time. Skies: Not this time. Music: Classic-feeling midis that don’t break copyright would be preferred. Maybe consider the Ultimate Midi Pack? I don’t care if there’s repeats this time. And if you want to use the default music, that’s cool. Since we are in Limit-Removing, there will be some repeat music in said ports that don’t support UMAPINFO or MAPINFO. Be aware of this. Resource Pack: Hey! Were you expecting a texture pack this time? Nope. We’re keeping it stock. Don’t ask for custom textures, please. Deadline is November 20th, 2023. Either this thread or Discord channel is good. I want time to compile and hopefully get this out before December. Please use this format for submission: Map Name: [ X ] Author: [ X ] Music: [ Song + Author ] Episode [1,2,3]: [ X ] Difficulty Settings: [ X ] Comments: [X] Screenshots: As most of the speedmapping rules don't apply here, just make a map! Effort: Let’s try to keep it higher effort…as in not intentionally all 1994 shovelware jank. If you're new, though, don't be worried that I'm not going to accept your map. We can always improve. Make sure it can be completed. Don’t modify the iwad levels and submit them. No generated maps (i.e. Oblige, etc.). Map Submission Limit: There is no cap to how many maps you can submit to this event. Fixes: Any bug fixing/map changes are due to me 1 week after I upload the final playthrough video of the last submission. I will not fix or edit your map without permission, but if you ghost us after submitting a map, I reserve the right to make necessary functional fixes ONLY (soft locks, missing starts, broken tags, etc.) so the map can be played and completed, or to reject the map. By submitting, you're agreeing to this. Of course, we'd prefer you take responsibility for your own work, and I will make multiple attempts to contact you first and give a reasonable amount of wait time. If your map is broken and you refuse to make any NECESSARY fixes so it is compatible with the target port and is beatable, then it is subject to rejection. Just remember, we're here to HELP YOU, so don't be discouraged. Somewhere off the Shores of Hell, where the ocean floor denizens walk knee-deep in the sand is the Pineapple Under the Sea. Difficulty Settings: Yes, including a bit of co-op stuff Comments: Named after the crater called 'Swift' on Deimos (itself named after Jonathan Swift, who apparently predicted the existence of two Martian moons in Gulliver's Travels). This map is allllllmost vanilla. I had lots of fun mapping. About 4 hours mapping time. Yes, I did channel my inner skillsaw a tiny bit for the first fight, why do you ask? May Romero smile upon us...Bugs: The yellow door is broken for some reason, so I just opened it for now. Will fix at some point... Difficulty Settings: Not yet implemented, same can be said for co-op. Comments: Made in about 8 - 9 hours, this was pretty fast due to my familiarity with Doom 1's assets. Tested: Zandronum; Chocolate Doom. Comments: Tried to combine Phobos Anomaly and Unto the Cruel in E1 format. Contains a couple of non-E1 textures and usage of METAL/SUPPORT3; may replace them if they do not fit the theme. I will do difficulty settings etc once the UV element has been ironed out a bit. The monster count gets close to the 200 limit, but hopefully it isn't too much to handle. Trying to make something feel like an actual Doom 1 map without directly referencing stuff from Doom 1 is a lot harder than I thought. Hopefully I end up finishing this.
