Biodegradable Posted November 4, 2023 Hell yeah, that's going to be a fun reunion. My timezone will probably screw me over, so I'll be sure to download the VOD. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Async Unicorn Posted November 4, 2023 (edited) I'm glad that I will celebrate 30th anniversary of my favorite game with all of community! Though it's kinda sad that Sandy doesn't want to make his new set of levels for this date, =( He and John - people who made this game great! I'd be glad if he just made 4 maps with a theme each, techbase, hell, city and marble and blood. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I'm not super up to date on this stuff, but my understanding was their issues were always strictly business, Carmack wanted to stay small, Romero wanted to expand. Was there more to it than just that? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

From what I've read, that seemed to have been due to the business differences I mentioned. Romero wanted id to constantly license their engine, keep working on new games, things like that. Carmack preferred staying small, and moving from one engine to the next, even if only one game used each one. And since Carmack was the programmer, the other owners sided with him. (This seems to be the simplified take anyway). But it seems outside of that, they've been on friendly terms for the most part. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Which is ironic, as Id Software ended up doing the things that John Romero wanted anyway, such as licensing engines (notably to Ion Storm for Daikatana of all games) and working with third-party studios on the Wolfenstein series and Quake IV/Quake spin-offs. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I think that was inevitable. Carmack probably knew that, too, but he wanted to stay small as long as possible. As "Masters of Doom" put it, Romero was the rock star, Carmack was the programmer. So that really drove their visions about how the company should be. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lila Feuer Posted November 5, 2023 Well they're both in their 50s now so whatever was going on between them in their twenties is water under the bridge at this point. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted November 5, 2023 Also neither of them are still at id anymore. Kevin Cloud and Donna Jackson are the only "survivors" of that era, everyone else who worked on id Software's sprite-based games is now gone. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
