VoanHead Posted November 7, 2023 I personally would like to see some more wild west styled pwads. Doesn’t necessarily have to always be taken place in a small town w/ a saloon and such. It can have varying environments and locations like both Red Dead Redemption games. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dreemurr Deceevurr Posted November 7, 2023 @Master O took the words out of my mouth re: ancient China, that's something I wondered about from a similar thread a couple years back. Other themes which I also thought would be neat to see (the first few of these, I also brought up in that thread): * 90s CGI rendering, in the vein of ReBoot and The Mind's Eye. * Silent Hill otherworlds, particularly the grimy, industrial one in 1 and 3. * Silver Age comic books and mid century sci-fi * MySpace/DeviantArt (not in that way)/Newgrounds (also not in that way) edgelord/scene kid look (There's actually a third person shooter in development that draws on this and other looks of the time) * The Appalachian mountains or really any general south-eastern US locale (outside of Miami) * Yume Nikki dreamscapes 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Jakub Majewski Posted November 7, 2023 Maybe it's an unpopular opinion, but personally, I'd love to see more recreations of locations that exist in our world, or in works of fiction. Examples we have so far include: Unholy Trinity, a recreation of Trinity College Ottawa, a remake of some Canadian unniversity Planisphere 2, recreation of a large portion of New York City Dawn of Reality, GZDoom map that recreates a part of the Polish city of Bytom, with custom textures made from photos myhouse.pk3. I'll leave it at that. Hoover Dam by Michael Reed, is a remake of the real Hoover Dam When it comes to real locations in other games, I can think of Liberty Island in Deus Ex 1 and Hatshepsut Temple in Serious Sam: The First Encounter(I was shocked to learn that it looks just like on the photos). In any case, I've been considering making some OSM(google maps but free) into Doom map converter, since they are both vector-esque data formats; the only issue being the overlapping sectors that can cause issues if not merged together, not quite sure how to solve that. Even if the idea behind real-life locations isn't so hot, why not go and recreate some environments from a fictional IP? The only case where I saw an attempt with something like this is Touhou Doom, which, while good of a mod, is kinda too blocky for my taste. I'd love to create a more proper recreation of Gensokyo with free-roaming NPCs. Same with Ponyville, or some other similar location. As far as the subject of having a Doom level taking place in a fictional universe, we have some old Star Wars wads, maybe Star Trek, and also Sonic(Robo Blast 2 and that old zdoom mod) and the occasional Mario-like level. Can we have an episode where Doomguy travels through, I dunno, the Middle-Earth? 11 hours ago, VoanHead said: I personally would like to see some more wild west styled pwads. Pancrasio Posted November 7, 2023 (edited) Something like LSD Dream Emulator. It could work really well in Doom. I guess in some way it could be done by texturing randomly everywhere, which I'm sure has been done before, but I mean using textures closer to that game in look, not just stock ones, or even rip the textures themselves. The Sky May Be also has an interesting aesthetic, I think it falls close but it's a different brand of abstract surrealism. There's just something about those flat colours and really tall shit... I wish someone could make that theme, but actually pleasing to stare at. Because even though a lot of the charm from The Sky May Be comes from being ugly as hell, I think it wouldn't tarnish its feeling in any way if we explored a theme that is just inspired by it. Really tall shit in and of itself would be cool, also really slim maps... Really tall and really slim maps, the two combined. Another kind of surrealism I would like to see strays a bit from abstraction... Maps where real, concrete things are represented through the engine, doomcute, I guess, but then given a weird spin. Make a realistic kayak in Doom Builder and then copy and paste it a whole lot of times across the map, randomly, all over the place. Make a doomcute living-room, but hanging on the ceiling. A realistic city with giant artichokes. Things like that. And +1 for American and Southasian civilizations. The artificial islands of Tenochtitlán, the Incan staired crops or the Indonesian rice fields look totally possible within the realms of the engine. The latter especially, because any kind of open country side with varying latitudes ends up accidentally looking like it, no matter what you do! Buddhist hell or ancient China may be a little harder to make but they're really cool as well. Edited November 7, 2023 by Pancrasio 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Having been to Bali myself, I can confirm that a mountainside rice paddy-strewn landscape would work brilliantly. Under a burning orange demonic sky would be *chef kiss*… the massive ancient stone temples in Indonesia would be really well set up for spicy Doom fights with lots of elevation and platforming. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
DogsRNice Posted November 8, 2023 I kinda want to see a hell setting thats more like some kind of "personal hell" or something not necessarily for the doom guy but like places that seem kinda like reality but are just more parts of hell. Doom 2 kinda did this but I feel like a less abstract approach would be cool. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

june gloom Posted November 9, 2023 I want to see more cyberpunk and post-apocalypse stuff, personally. Say what you will about Doomer Boards but they nailed a certain aesthetic with Augur Zenith and Emerald City. That's something I'd kill to see actually: a full, Ashes-style semi-RPG adventure in a cyberpunk setting. I'd also just like to see themes centered around non-hellish bestiaries. More eldritch monsters, or mutants, or something, would be cool. The infamous RED mod for Marathon featured a war between two opposing chaotic entities that represented flesh and metal, and their respective armies were interesting. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
