Yeah in Doom 3 I think it was implied it was Sarge's weapon brought with him as he used it to hunt back on Earth.

 

I like how D3 tried to ground almost everything despite still playing like a video game.

And yes, there is a text log in Doom 3 where the user complains about receiving shipments of chainsaw and attributes it to a shipping mistake.
