NeilForshaw Posted November 9, 2023 I have a habit of just bursting into rooms and getting wrecked. I leave enemies that I can just run past. Really annoys some people though. They're like "you going to go back and kill those enemies"... I say.... "nahh" XD 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
LouigiVerona Posted November 9, 2023 (edited) I am generally a fan of being really careful. I try to prepare before entering a room and shoot as many monsters down as I can from afar or through windows. I enjoy exploring the space and searching for secrets. I might usually spend an inordinate amount of time searching for secrets on a level. To the point that I might be coming back to an interesting level weeks or months later and searching for secrets. I have failed with AUGER;ZENITH, MAP03. I found all secrets but one: there's a megasphere seen behind impassable glass. I spent hours and hours and hours running around the level and finding ways to get it. Eventually, I somehow got the secret door to unlock. No matter how much I tried, however, I couldn't reproduce it. Eventually, I opened the was file in the editor and looked it up. The result did not make me feel bad, because I realized that there was no way I could've ever found it. Same thing with AUGER;ZENITH, MAP07. It turned out it was the same principle. Again, I would've never found it, and I might've spent a collective 2+ hours just searching for this last secret before opening it in the editor. But sometimes it pays off. I spent the same amount of time searching for all the secrets in AUGER;ZENITH, MAP17 and eventually found all the secrets. It was epic. Btw, this map is one of my favorite maps of all time, such an incredible space! Having said that, I do enjoy maps where the strategy is to just run around in circles. So, it's not always just about being a sniper. p.s.: I chronically forget to save :D Edited November 9, 2023 by LouigiVerona 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
fishboy29 Posted November 9, 2023 I usually stick to the same weapon until I run out of ammo, am using a terrible weapon for the situation, or am not in a fight. Really big problem for me. Also I always try to get 100% secrets & kills, but I don't try too hard because most secrets end up being completely un-telegraphed or nearly impossible to see. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted November 10, 2023 2 hours ago, staros96 said: Pretty chill - similar to @Aeddes666 tbh. Like to be cautious on ammo, provoke infighting so my job is at least partially done, soak in the environment - on the last point, its why I genuinely love aesthetic WADs. Visuals are a big one for me so I like to take my time, hence slaughter etc not really my style. What about ones with strong aesthetics and slaughter (Technucolor Antichrist Box as an example?) :P) Anyway, that's easy. Trying to play as many wads as possible right now generally means that lock-in fights can cause frustration when I'm just trying to finish a map! A fairly aggressive manner for the most part, probably more than would be wise in cases such as when an Arch-vile is surrounded by lots of other enemies. I also try to be methodical though, to a point but that's not really an approach that works with every wad, which just makes things a case of die and repeat until an intender strategy is worked out. If I can, I'll try to take my time and explore and soak in the visuals but if I generally don't spot any signs like some oddly-placed shootable switch or odd texture, I won't go over the same spot more than 1 or 2 times as a rule. Leads to problems in the harder maps but there's often nothing for it but to continue. A great midi can cause me to spend more time in a map than intender though. All in all, my playstyle is really quite loose and even if I know everything I'll do or attempt to do in a given map, I could care less of trying to conquer some big fight entirely. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

The goal is finish the map, i don't care with 100% on anything, except if i'm testing a map to someone. I like too see the architeture and always take prints from maps. Now I understand why I had difficulty playing your map. It amuses me how people can create such different things from the same set of tools. Keep on mapping, friend. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
SupremeBioVizier Posted November 10, 2023 (edited) No add-ons No saves(I usually forget) I approach corners like I'm playing paint ball or Lazer tag I suck at finding secrets If I get like 5 different monsters in the same room with an archvile while playing someone's wad work I usually die then inspect the contents in slade in admiration of defeat. I do enjoy a good baron/ hell knight circle strafing....I really need to play the ultimate DOOM (or maybe it was in DOOM2)episodes again, Memories of some level with a cyber demon still haunts me with repeated attempts of pacing correctly. Amaruψ Posted November 10, 2023 My style is to start the game, enter a level, do something stupid, and die. Yea I'm... not quite good with the game up until I'm 100% familiarized with the layout and the enemy placement, I cannot play well with it, so I consistently save :P 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

The BMFG Posted November 10, 2023 very aggressive, lots of strafing. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr. Freeze Posted November 10, 2023 It's brought over from my Resident Evil gameplay, but unlike most players I am happy to run right past most enemies to conserve resources. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ReaperAA Posted November 10, 2023 Kind of like what rd said. I don't have a single approach. Some maps I play cautiously while in other maps I play aggressive (as in open as many triggers as possible and let infighting thin the hordes). Playing aggressive is not only more fun, but at times can actually make the map easier. AA's Map15 is a prime example. Also if a map is too easy, I also sometimes try to challenge myself by adding some extra challenge. Like trying a no-damage or not use a particular item/weapon/powerup for a particular fight etc. etc. On the flipside, if a map is too hard. I do try to make sure that I only save before or after a fight (not try to save in-between a fight) and if I am in the mood, I try to study the encounter to figure out the best strat by playing a fight in different ways. These things don't just apply for Doom, but also apply for other similar games I play as well. As far as kills and secrets are concerned, I generally try to get as many as possible. But if there are some enemies which didn't teleport or some really really obscure secrets, then I will leave them. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
CravenCoyote Posted November 10, 2023 (edited) I enjoy smaller levels that are somewhat linear - I don't like the idea of being lost in a huge map, nor tedious switch hunts and complex puzzles. Slaughter maps are generally not my idea of fun. I like to cautiously explore new areas and scout out what's ahead. If things are feeling a bit dangerous, I'll sometimes run ahead to see if it's any safer there. I guess I switch between being aggressive and being cautious depending on the feel of a map. I like to feel pressured, but not to the point where I feel "I can't cope with this difficulty". I'm an unapologetic save-scummer. DankMetal Posted November 10, 2023 Honestly? I've never thinked about that, all depends on how the map is designed, and i found fascinating how the author can "control" your playstyle. If there's little to no health, you will think in a more strategic and methodic way. If the ambient is dark, horrifying and dreadful, you will be playing more cautious, looking after every corner, with fear. Or, my personal favorite, if you're being attacked by a powerful sniper like the mastermind or a cyberdemon, they will make you think fast, with no hesitation. I think this aspect is really overlooked when talking about "level design", and i'm a sucker for this type of things. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

DoomGappy Posted November 10, 2023 For those who map, do you feel like the way you play affects the way you map? How do you go about editing your maps knowing people other than you will play them? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I think he's referring to the concept of idiot-proofing your map. The mom being a stand-in for the "idiot" or more appropriately: "Someone who's never played a video game before and hasn't yet conformed to certain gaming conventions through years and years of experience." Also I definitely map to my own preferences, but try to put in one or two "classically doom" moments where its run-and-gun for other people to enjoy (Hell I enjoy them too, just not as much as the rest of my preferences :P) Edited November 11, 2023 by Wo0p 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

If you like exploration based maps, make exploration maps. If you like Puzzle or slaughter maps, make those kinds of maps. In other words, make the kind of maps you would enjoy playing". This is the most important, imo. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
NotMuchNormal Posted November 11, 2023 (edited) Tis an interesting question... Well, I'm more of a careful player. If something looks like a trap, it probably is. If something doesn't... it probably is xD I'll walk carefully from one room to the other, hiding behind the corner to avoid getting hit with return fire, taking the monsters by surprise since their reflexes are so low. I always try to move as little as possible since everywhere there may be a linedef to open up a monster cache lol. Unless ofcourse the crap hits the fan, and I'm like teleported to a room full of baddies. In that case, I try to prioritise the targets - the archies, revenants, pain elementals and all hitscanners are priority targets, while I'm running around to avoid getting hit by knights, demons and imps. I try to look around most of the time, registering the direction of incoming projectiles. My preferred weapon combo is sniping with the chaingun on ranges and the ssg for a close punch. I very rarely use the energy weapons for some reason. I guess I like to reserve that for a cybie encounter or something. Edited November 11, 2023 by NotMuchNormal 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Monocled Posted November 12, 2023 I just like having fun, I don't often really commit to complete a whole wad unless its short, I play with a lot of gameplay mods. I try to get the most "stylish" kills and in quick succession, I don't really play it like a campaign and more like an arcade game. In fact i intentionally randomize the levels and level order for that reason 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ApprihensivSoul Posted November 12, 2023 Save-scum+UV, and I like using a patch of some sort that makes monsters and projectiles faster and weapons for me and my enemies more damaging. I also like Single-Segment, so I find maps that have high concentrations of long, dynamic encounters and a bit of unfairness most rewarding, especially if they handle exploration and atmosphere really well. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
kalensar Posted November 13, 2023 The first time I play a new wad I YOLO and see how far I can get on one life. Not necessarily aggressive, but not slow going either. Basically if I like what I am seeing then I'll devote a save slot to it and then save scum from there. Other than that I retreat and shoot from better positions. If unable then break dancing begins. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
elborbahquarama Posted November 14, 2023 i would say "ocd", i always try to balance the amount of ammunitions i have for each weapon and carefully inspect the environnement looking for anything i could have missed, i sort of "plan" my progression through a level in my head (send help i'm crazy) (that's okay actually i've done it so much now it's very automatic) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
