I always found the story in Doom 3 very bad tbh. Not Eternal bad, but still quite bad.

I do wonder what they'd even do since the end of the ancient gods was so final

Unless it's something like doomguy getting sent to another multiverse to fight another hell or something

Well our boy Hugo Martin has hinted at the idea as the Doom Slayer being this sort of Monster Jam Truck. Like this unstable, yet slow and concisive force of nature. The speed and fluidity of the slayer himself will be a bit decreased. As more destructible environmental elements will take center stage, and will be apart of the main focus to really nail the feeling of doomguy's Reckless nature of carnage.

Also recent privatized document information has been leaked not while ago indicating that a new doom game (named Doom: Year Zero) WAS scheduled to come out this year. However this document itself is dated as far back as 2019 (pre pandemic). Not saying that the game itself is canned. But if there's anything to go by here, it is that a new doom game IN FACT, is on the way.

// Rather than try an pad out the narrative, they could take a turn back to the origin of the game and give just enough of a tale to add context and leave the rest a vague as possible. "you punched out your CO, now its either 18 months in the brig or 6 on mars... and you forgot your toothbrush." { looks down at daisy. she blinks at him... fade to red.} gameplay and environmental storytelling provides the rest of the experience.

I like how they presented hell to us in the 2016/enternal games, but in my head that's not "doomguy" ...idk I'm a sucker for the old legends, a simple ashlad rises above and becomes a saviour...I rather have the demons be aliens and have the story become independence day with will smith...

Doom Eternal's story is panned by a large portion of the fanbase so I'm not sure why you think the next one will 'suck.' I guess the plot could be completely incoherent and the focus would probably shift to the setpiece cutscenes as a result but realistically, it won't be worst as long as there's a Point A to Point B narrative throughout most of the game.

Hot take.  I already think it sucks.  I liked it better when it just demon's invading our dimension and he was just DOOMguy.  Just some badass person and we got to fill in the blanks on what was happening between text screens.  Don't get me wrong, the new DOOM games are amazing, but the lore sounds like a Dethklok song.

It has sucked since 2016, what're you expecting, it getting worse?

Expanding upon this little passive aggressive statement I made yesterday:

I'm someone who likes a little bit of a story in my video games. I love the simplicity of the original's; UAC is conducting teleportation experiments, people who're subjected to it go through the hell first, get crazy. One day, hell breaks loose and swaps dimensions using the technology. They use Deimos as a slingshot. Everyone's killed. You're the only one left for the miles. You're not even portrayed as badass; you're just an ordinary guy who punched his superior officer and is now stationed over here as a punishment. That's about it.

Then you get small little tidbits of plot in between the episodes, the rest is there to be filled in by your own imagination.

Doom 3 expanded very little over the idea. I'd say it refined it more, but made it a little bit cheesy to have a stereotypical bad guy into the mix.

Since 2016, I absolutely HATE the Power Fantasy Brutal Doom crap it is. "They fear you" and "Rip n' Tear!" are the cheesiest textbook crap I've ever heard in my life. I'd compare it to the Joker; the original joker being ruthless yet a psychopathic character to be around. The modern one being a Jeff the Killer fanfic. The same case goes here; they just made the story crap, to the point I wish it never existed.

So yea, back to my statement.

It's already crap, it won't get any worst.

Does anyone fear that the next Doom game might have a story?

I think Doom Eternal's storytelling is awful, a disgusting mess of proper nouns spread across a bunch of irritating and unnecessary lore cards. The lore cards fucking suck. They're a prime example of why "show, don't tell" is a golden rule in storytelling. It's one thing if something is naturally integrated into the setting, like the audio tapes like in Bioshock - you pick one up, and it plays dialogue that explains something about the area you're in, an important character, or the combination to a safe. You can continue playing the game while the tape plays. Doom Eternal is a fast-paced FPS where, in order to understand the plot, you have to pick up floating walls of text that you're supposed to stop and read. It actively fucks up the pace of the game and is at odds with the overall gameplay. The story itself is a bunch of melodramatic fantasy mumbo jumbo that I would accuse of being written by ChatGPT if the game was released today.

Doom needs to focus more on atmosphere, which is lacking in DE, instead of this incredibly lame fantasy "epic".

What are your thoughts on th cod zombies lore? Do you think it's farr better and well written than doom?

I played a lot of CoD Zombies, I think it's a legitamately great thing. I don't like the story in CoD, or the multiplayer, but the Zombies mode is unique, challenging, and deep. Each map is a huge puzzle full of easter eggs that are hidden so well that you actually feel accomplishment by finding them. You switch from multiplayer/campaign to Zombies, and suddenly the game has a heart and soul, not to mention actual gameplay that requires a significant amount of thought, planning, and skill.

That being said, I did not understand the story/lore at all because I did not pay much attention and I didn't play the maps in order. I played it for the gameplay, and I played solo because I'm incredible. I thought the characters were amusing, but I can't tell you a single thing I remember about the plot, other than the fact that the cutscenes were very silly and lighthearted. I know there's this big story full of lore, but I never looked into it. I think that having a fully fleshed out plot in something like CoD Zombies is fine, because it's kind of funny that a plot exists at all. The plot does not get in the way of the game at all, and it's all very silly and not meant to be taken seriously, unlike Doom Eternal. If anything, I think it's cool that they thought up all of this stuff for what is essentially a bonus mode in a game. I can at least tell you that the plot in CoD Zombies is probably more interesting than the story in any of the campaigns.

It's sucked since 1993, and I think that's the intention

. . . It already does. I hate to break it to you, but Doom is a gameplay first game, and it's story in 2016 was a mere formality, and in Eternal what is shoehorned in there is terrible and doesn't mesh well with 2016's attitude. Yhatzee from ZP put it best in his review, where it felt lie the devs were in on the joke in 2016 but weren't in Eternal.

I also realized that I think I got baited, now that I reread the post and realized it insulted Eternal's story as well. Oh well, guess I got got. posting anyway.

I definitely have my criticisms of Doom Eternal but overall I think it's a great game! With a very unnecessary, poorly told convoluted story...

The game is challenging and drives in only one speed and style, fast and hard. It's understandable some people don't like that but by no means the game is bad, in fact many of its mechanics inspired other fps, just as classic Doom did. As they say, when you get into the "fun zone" it makes it one of the greatest most refined fps games to date.

Learning curve and tutorials are bad too, which others may have heard me rant about once before. But I do believe that is a key reason why some couldn't get into Eternal.

As for the next Doom game, I wouldn't mind a change of pace and more horror elements. Sure I am concerned it will suck, just as I am with any franchise I love but the developers are quite capable, well funded and experienced in the genre.

imagine caring about the story in doom

Not much of a tall order in 2023, and I myself know people who played Quake Champions for lore unlocks!

I can’t say much about Eternal’s story myself as I’ve skipped every scene besides the ending; the level progression probably would have made more sense and gave me less tonal whiplash.

I feel like the next games story might be disappointing and very, sucky. People are talking about the downgrade in story telling in spiderman 2 compared to the first one 2018 spiderman. It's made me wonder, what if the story is just not good, or just flat out bad that it makes doom eternals story look like a masterpiece or something. Ya?

Can I suggest not posting while bombed. It's not working well for you. Getting worked up about future games which may or may not ever exist is supreme foolishness.
