Next doom game won't have mick. Is doom, doomed!?

Yep. It's true. The next installment in the doom franchise will not have legendary game ost musician Mick Gordon reprise his role. Is it over for us doom chuds? Should we start packing our bags and look elsewhere into the doom classic modding community? Or, maybe, can doom without Mick still thrive? Or will his lack of presence decrease the quality of the next doom game..

You say it as if the news was at all recent when it's been known for 2-3 years.

I'm trying my damnedest to decipher this question and having an aneurysm doing so.

It absolutely can. Mick did leave a mark in the Doom franchise that isn't easy to live up to, but Andrew Hulshult and David Levy did a great job on the TAGs all things considered.

Doom existed long before Mick Gordon even made a name for himself within the gaming industry.

I mean, I do not see anyone claiming that Doom is doomed because it has not been scored by Bobby Prince in 30 years or so.

Should we reject and ditch modern doom. And move on to sticking with classic doom and the abundance of wads that come out weekly.

Seems like you're taking this too seriously. People that plays and/or mods classic Doom will still do it regardless of the state of the franchise. Availability and ease of use of modding and map making tools is what made Doom eternal, not the lack of new entries.

Doom 2016 and Eternal are there, you can play them if you want, you can acknowledge their existence if you want, so does Doom 64 and 3.

It's cool that the franchise is still going on, but it's not the end of the world if Mick's not the music composer anymore.

It's your choice if you want to engage with it or not, or as better put by Doom itself:

To be fair I think Hulshult and Levy did a really good job for the DLCs.

But how good of a job tho? Can they stand up against mick? I don't think they can imo. What's left for doom

This is a silly position to have. It's like saying that a game is completely living or dying by its music. And as someone who loves game music (a lot), while it can damn well make a game more memorable, and I'd prefer that music generally be done for a series by one composer, it is not the end of the world if it's a different guy doing the music.

Mick Gordon is certainly a name in the business, but it's not like he's got a monopoly on that style of music. And frankly, the worst thing any game could be is too formulaic - Mick's style would be terrible for the OG Doom games, for example, because Bobby Prince was smart enough to realize that besides the heavy thrashing, you also needed pieces that brought up the creepiness and the ill-ease factors, something that's honestly kind of been missing from both Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.

Hell, Doom 3 barely even had music at all. And there's still some people who love it.

So it sounds like you're more attached to "Mick Gordon scoring Doom" than you are to the idea of Doom itself as a gameplay style. Otherwise, you'd know it'll turn out fine.

The amount of times that Hugo has mentioned how id Software "never makes the same game twice" (except for the part where that's not entirely true), I'd be very surprised if the next Doom game actually shared the same tone as the previous ones. Different "feeling" means different style of music, and finding the right composer for that new style would be important.

THAT SAID... if they still want the Mick Gordon style... and Hulshult and Levy are busy... I sure wouldn't mind seeing them give Geoffrey Day a chance :P

Who knows. But it's glad to see that it isn't all DOOM and GLOOM for, doom. Maybe Andrew Hulshults contribution to the next games soundtrack might end up being as important as Mick Gordon's contribution to doom 2016. As the new composers can really give off a different feel and tone for the next doom game with their music now that I think of it. Who konoes.

Since the next game will likely be a reboot anyway, this question is profoundly absurd. It would make sense if Mick Gordon didn't return for Doom Eternal, but he did and it was basically contract fuckery that made it so he wouldn't do TAG's music.

What happened to Mick sucks but this series has had music from other composers and it's one that also went through different iterations.

Whether the next Doom could still be part of the same formula or a different one, we also got new composers to prove that the games can still work with a different music style.

With Bobby Prince, classic Doom music also felt different enough that one track or two sounded like jazz: There's a certain variety that feels lost when someone makes those "heavy metal" remasters of the music.

Let's just hope id treats composers better next time.

I still go with the theory (someone else technically came up with it first) that id didn't like how a name was attached to the games that wasn't the actual director.

And this is because AAA games don't feel like they have "authorship", so modern Doom was an exception.

Yeah... I'd like to announce I'm boycotting the new Doom game, after Concept Artist #12 was "let go" for stealing art supplies.

I'm waiting for Bethesda's response...

Andrew Hulshult is pretty fucking good at what he does, if they are using him then it is fine.

Also, Doom isn't carried by the music alone, it's mainly the gameplay.

You forget that Doom 2 has fucking samba music in it and Doom 3 has like 5 tracks at most (less forget, more probably don't know because you likely didn't play them looking at your posts), the next Doom won't be shit because 1 musician isn't there.

Doom Eternal didn't have any maps made by John Romero, therefore it's bad and all future Doom games will be bad.

That's how this thread works, right?

1. What is a chud?
2. No. Why would it be? Especially since this community is comprised primarily of fans of the original games first, some of whom like the new games, and many don't.

Yes it can potentially thrive. To suggest Mick's music was the only thing that made the new games good is frankly rather baffling. If that's how you feel, then you probably should have refunded the games and purchased the soundtracks instead.

Again, this is an absolutely baffling statement. Why would you stop playing games you enjoy because the composer won't be involved in future games that have potentially not even had a single line of code written for them? How does this course of action make any sense whatsoever? Even if Mick had not fallen out with id, it's entirely possible he would not have been involved in a new series of Doom games anyway. They may have chosen to go in a new direction.

Spot on. Nothing will make me lose interest in what someone has to say than saying something like that. It's code for "I'm right, people who disagree with me are wrong, and I want to fight about it!"

Given that most of the people here do that anyway and always have, how is this "moving on?"
