TheMagicMushroomMan Posted November 11, 2023 I don't think I've cried while playing Doom, but I've gotten teary-eyed during other games that aren't sad, usually due to the music. A good song can trigger tears even if it isn't depressing. I don't usually cry during sad movies or anything, it has to be something really powerful for a story to actually make me cry. But a powerful atmosphere combined with the right song can make me tear up. It happens all the time when I'm just listening to music. I've heard plenty of guitar solos that made me tear up. It doesn't make you a pussy when that happens, the point of art is to move you. Granted, I'm just talking about tearing up, not bawling your eyes out and sobbing. That can make you look too attached to the art. But it's normal to cry a bit when you see/hear/experience something that you percieve as being beautiful. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
"JL" was too short Posted November 11, 2023 2 hours ago, Lila Feuer said: I'm sad we never got a proper sequel. It was so bizarre to me how the author decided to turn the sequel into a standalone game that looked like complete garbage (or at least it did at the stage I saw it in; I'm not sure if it ever became anything good, but I would have thought I'd hear of it if it did...). You'd think from the original Unloved that the guy had some creative bona fides, and then they decided that that was what they wanted to put out there as a sequel. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
kaleb. Posted November 11, 2023 Grove is the only time I have cried in doom for some reason. To be fair I was also really high but still. The music and atmosphere is just too good. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Li'l devil Posted November 11, 2023 When I was playing Doom as a kid, a revenant came up to me and punched me in the face. I immediately began crying and ran to complain to mom about being bullied in Doom. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lila Feuer Posted November 11, 2023 @jerrysheppy Yeah it's why I never actually played Unloved II because I was too annoyed at the prospect of it ending at a red key you pick up and that's it. And I mean who am I to judge a creator for what they want to do with their own thing, but still I agree and I feel like it completely missed the point of what made the mod so great, this was also during the dark times of pre-DUSK boomer shooters so it just unintentionally came off as a low effort asset rip with all the fancy FX tuned up to 11 to try and mask how bland everything actually is. Don't think the standalone game went anywhere, so that's that. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Carmelo Posted November 11, 2023 Playing Grove, during the ost climax, I always get teary eyed. That song is magical and seems to come from such an honest place. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Xeebleton Posted November 11, 2023 I almost cried playing E1M5 on 3DO Doom using Phoenix Doom. I'm telling you all, Suspense in that port is an absolutely beautiful track. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Biodegradable Posted November 11, 2023 I didn't burst into tears, but @129thVisplane's doggy heaven map as a loving tribute to their late dog is pretty touching and left a lump in my throat at the very end. 8 Quote Share this post Link to post

OceanMadman Posted November 11, 2023 I remember myself playing Doom when I was 6 years old or so after my grandmother passed away while I was in tears. That wasn't nice. The closest I've been since then I think, like others have mentioned, was playing that certain wad with trees, ocarina music and a red sky with stars. It's way too powerful for a doom map, man. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zulk RS Posted November 11, 2023 (edited) One time when I was a kid I was playing Doom and then something went in my eye and I was rubbing my eye to try and get it out and it made my eyes turn red and water. Edited November 11, 2023 by Zulk RS 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Somniac Posted November 11, 2023 Yes, but thinking back it tends to be more of a catharsis of externally driven emotions, rather than a direct emotional response to a specific map. There are exceptions, though. The first time I played Grove was at the tail end of a trip, and unless you've been in that state its hard to describe, but it was a very powerful experience. I do think the right map in the right circumstance can hit just as good as a song that tugs your heartstrings. Good art should make you feel stuff! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Amaruψ Posted November 11, 2023 Not sure if it warrants as crying, but my eyes water a lot when I've got a fever. So yes, whenever I get a fever and play DOOM, I'm technically crying. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Kyka Posted November 11, 2023 12 hours ago, EraserheadBaby said: Yes. I had mold poisoning a few months ago and didn't know it. It was causing severe mental instability, mood swings, amnesia, violent outbursts, and hallucinations. I lost a job. Then I played MyHouse.wad and had a complete meltdown that lasted for a few days. I couldn't even finish the wad. The dilapidated house in MyHouse.wad hit close to home as did the text blurbs from item pickups. All the 90's nostalgia made me think about things I'd rather not. Especially the airport. The airport was the worst part. It's making me feel a bit weird even talking about it. Between that wad, squatting in this old house, and mold poisoning, I actually had a bit of a breakthrough. Better than a therapist. Hot damn, life can be crazy. I'm gonna go listen to "Hot Sexy Body" by Noiselund and cheer myself back up. Hope y'all are feeling ok I hope things are better for you and your health has really come good. Thank you for sharing. If you don't mind me asking, what did you do to get over/rid of the mold infection? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

If you don't mind me asking, what did you do to get over/rid of the mold infection? They don't really have a lot of meds for it. I was given an antifungal medication. It didn't do much. I found out the mold can live in your gut and loves sugar. So I stopped eating any sugar and started eating a lot of fermented food to beef up my guy biome. I also ate a lot of kale to help out my live. Started taking a lot of vitamin D and apple cider vinegar everyday. Drank a ton of water. The thing I ate most was just bratwurst with saurkraut, kale, and a lot of hot sauce. It had me feeling better in 3 days. I'm still not 100%, this kind of thing usually take 3-9 months to clean up. But all the really bad stuff is cleared up and what I listed wasn't even half the symptoms but they were the worst. I punch a hole in the wall in my sleep and didn't wake up from it. Absolute madness. I feel pretty normal but my endurance and clarity of thought aren't up to snuff. Oh, and I had to tear out all the contaminated drywall, and carpeting, every piece of upholstered furniture that was here when I arrived and strait velveteen rabbitted that pile, the sprayed the entire house with an industrial lab grade antimicrobial and the bleached it. Oh yeah, thanks for asking. I forgot to say that. See what I mean. My brains are still slippin a bit. Edited November 11, 2023 by EraserheadBaby 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
prfunky Posted November 11, 2023 I've cried multiple times when playing longer deathmatch sessions with my friends. But it's not because of being sad or because I'm getting my ass kicked so bad (I was tho'!). No, it's two things; 1) the intense level we're playing at where we're so dialed in going at it I'd begin tearing up. This is one of the reasons why I generally set map timelimit of matches to 8 minutes. That way, there's the intermission "breather". Still, play enough maps in a row, 6-8 or so, and I'll end up tearing up from the intensity. 2) tearing up from laughing so goddamn much! Seriously, these sessions sometimes can be downright gut-busting funny. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

galileo31dos01 Posted November 14, 2023 Considering how hard it is for me to shed a tear from emotions compared to when having an onion under my eyes, no I haven't cried while playing this game. Been mad, happy, ijboled once or twice, but no crying yet. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
