Apparently, Blue Shift currently doesn't seem to work with the update. It tries to launch but CTD's. Opposing Force seems to work fine, at least in the sense that it boots up and everything.

Good to see Valve paying their respects to the game that put them on the map. But damn, an actual substantial update on the 25th anniversary? That's gotta be some kind of record.

Yeah, 2023 must be a good year for old games. System Shock Remake gets released, Postal 2 20th Anniversary Update, ROTT remaster, etc, and now this. I hope they keep it up and update Half-Life 2 when the time comes, if that hasn't happened yet.

Did they add in the weird strafing head-bob thing from Quake? It's been a while (like a year) since I last played Half Life and I can't quite remember if this was here or not originally, although I'm pretty sure it wasn't. Is there a console command to turn this off because it's really gross and creepy and I hate it. Otherwise though, I love to see developers keeping their old games up to date on modern systems instead of letting them rot to the point of being completely unplayable without major patches and source ports. Thank you Valve.

I couldn't find any mention of it myself. Is it that thing where the camera tilts when you move left/right?

It is. The effect works for Quake since you're running around at 40 miles per hour but in Half Life it just feels like Gorden is a mentally disabled man flailing around in the tram ride to work.

The effect is still there, but I have no clue whether there's a console command for it. There are options now to turn off texture filtering and other stuff, though.

Legit the last thing I'd expected today. I booted up Hazardous Course 2 and wondered why everything looked like the CD Version of Half-Life lmao.

No doubt this is because Blue Shift isn't actually a Half-Life mod; it actually uses its own modified engine (for some reason), and is totally incompatible with the original Half-Life engine. It would indeed instantly crash if you tried to load it as a Half-Life mod, so the behaviour in the update isn't a regression.

Good luck with that. Even if I am someday literally playing that game, part of me will still somehow think it's an elaborate prank and it won't simply say "LOL SUCKA!" and crash after the first map.

Managed to nab it, so even if I might not get a chance to play it (Never say never?), at least I'll treasure it as a relic for the rest of my life.

 

By the by, has anyone had any problems with Steam freezing when they launch the store page? I assume the Steam Deck OLED being featured on said page might be the cause..

Glad they woke up the 1 janitor working on HL 1 updates, he's really doing god's work.

 

But seriously though, real cool to see HL 1 get some love. Definitely my personal favourite Half Life game, I could never really get into HL 2.

How do I change this in the Steam Input settings if anyone has a Deck?

 

Edit: Ignore this. Just found out how to set the stick to WASD (It would be really nice if this were the default Valve!)

Mods, expansions and other HL1 engine games (except Sven Coop) are kind of broken with the new update. You can revert back to the previous version and bring everything back to working order by right clicking the game in the Steam library and going Properties > Betas > steam_legacy. An updated Mod SDK is in the works, according to the patch notes.

Blue Shift was done originally for the Dreamcast version and when that was cancelled and when they ported it to PC they couldn't be bothered to recompile the BSPs (the Dreamcast version uses a slightly modified BSP format) for some reason... so instead they went through the effort of adding support for the level format for the Dreamcast version to Half_Life
