Amaruψ Posted November 20, 2023 Just a few days ago, being bored out of my mind, I decided to try and recreate DOOM II's iconic opening map, the fabled Entryway. The goal was to stay relatively faithful to the original map's layout, but at the same time, create the new iteration in a way that it appears more as a human constructed architecture, and less of an abstract representation of one. I've stayed about 75% faithful to the original map's layout, changing it around whenever the need be. In terms of geometry choices, I stuck with a more boxy structure, taking the original's walls that were going all over the place and giving them a definite shape to exist as. Similarly, I've given the textures a much more uniform look all around, instead of the original's no-holds barred whenever it came to texture variety, with no regards to the fact if they even look good together. All in all, I've played around with the lighting to give the map a much, much more dark and moody atmosphere. I borrowed a few sprites from the original beta version of DOOM, and since I was mapping in the vanilla format and thus having no other way to add new map objects instead of replacing the existing ones, I did just that. Don't be surprised if you load another map with this .wad loaded and see chairs or bushes instead of trees or pillars. I was supposed to compose an entirely new music track for the map, but due to the inability to do so at the moment, I've borrowed CBlood 2 from Blood shareware for the time being. One little addition to the original was the reintroduction of the original starting area. Yes, in DOOM II's pre-release version, the map has an entirely different opening area, which was removed before release. I've re-added it (albeit in a different location) to serve an entirely different purpose. Tested with Crispy Doom and GZDoom. Hope you enjoy :) Download it at Gamebanana Download it at ModDB 32 Quote Share this post Link to post
RjY Posted November 20, 2023 first attempt, 9:45 Had to try this due to predilection for IWAD remakes. A simple layout (by necessity of imitation) with mostly 90 degree corners, but with a high level of detailing made it reminiscent of early or mid 2000s era map design. Slightly harder than the original but not much. Appreciate the idea of incorporating the missing parts from the prerelease version. The shadow-casted UAC logo was also very enticing. "Ooh I have to get out there and see that up close". Lots of wall humping, everything looks like a secret trigger :P Naturally, the reward for a job well done is a request for further work. It would be good to see more of Doom2 redone in this style. Please continue :) 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

I will indeed create more; in fact, I think I'll create a poll to see which maps people want to see being reimagined. As for the secrets, you'll see subtle hints in the map all around to denote where they are :P On 11/20/2023 at 1:46 AM, tornado potato said: That UAC logo .. *chef's kiss*. I'm not planning to do the entirety of the campaign (a bit much work for one person), so seeing what the community wants would be a treat :) On 11/20/2023 at 3:56 AM, AugPin1973 said: Genuine question: Why don't you post the .zip file directly here? Expand It's easier for me to maintain and distribute files that I've uploaded on Gamebanana. The site's system to keep a changelog document and ability to let one submission host multiple downloads not only makes it easier for me myself to keep a track of my progress and bug reports and fixes, it also allows the .wad to be more discoverable. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
AshtralFiend Posted November 20, 2023 Entryway but bigger, darker, and harder (compared to the original) The atmosphere makes it look almost like a Doom 64 map. Good stuff! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Bri0che Posted November 20, 2023 Cool stuff, the Blood music is particularly appreciated :) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

The first map of the game. Not sure what expectations you went in there with. I'm not going to construct a map and then essentially ruin the majority of the appeal by making it a slaughter map. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Zoti Posted November 20, 2023 I like the map and its atmosphere and the fact that it's a slaughter doesn't bother me but I'll test the special version out of curiosity! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted November 21, 2023 The lighting was very nice! I also like how you reduced the emphasis on abstraction to make something a touch more realistic but still designed to play well. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

I did not run into any issues and I have a good time. Looking forward to more! 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted December 6, 2023 Finally got to try it out. Pretty good! A definitive improvement over the original. I would not mind playing more reimagined Doom II maps from you! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
