Wood5forLife: a map with only a single texture

Recommended Posts

hi! i just finished playing this wad in uv. wow! did not know the wood5 texture could be used in such creative manner. a real eye-opener, for me at least. the battles were challenging too, and i liked the "golden bridge" strategies implemented in the map (not locked-in, "golden bridge" is an actual real life military strategy) making the map feel much more open. i particularly liked the monster placement in the screenshot below - the centerpiece a faux cover for the mancubus' attacks with an awaiting chaingunner at the backside. simply brilliant :) thanks for making + sharing this gem of a wad :)

Your love for Wood5 is endless haha - it's honestly a texture I never find myself using and it's so cool to see the creative things you can do with it - you were so happy making it this map feels less brutal than usual - somehow I stumbled through it you may enjoy that haha - good times buddy

I also really like how you got the buttons for Doomguy to step on to activate stuff in the level, as well as the fact that the level is textured with only one wall texture. Fantastic job @Pistoolkip.

This is great! WOOD5 was always my favorite, but I never dreamed of a map with no other texture. The buttons were clever. Nice work! Here's an FDA from an old, rusty player, played awkwardly on a laptop and without my trusty trackball :)

Recorded with dsda-doom v0.27.4

Dude, this is such a beautifully clean and sharp map. Brilliant detailing, and the subdued nature of the oatmeal floors matches the wood masterfully. Adding in that orange sky for extra pop is the cherry on top. Wood love to play a mini wad of this sort of concept. Single texture maps with very creative details.. that “sun room” with the wheel ceiling has really got me inspired! :) great work!

Thanks! I use a bunch of Wood5 in the upcoming vanilla megawad Slith II, and that really inspired me to make this stand-alone. It is an extremely versatile texture and goes great with the orange sky.

That was a wild ride. How you stumbled through that in one piece will never know. Maybe you're secretly a really good Doom player?

Thanks! The floor-buttons are a great find to get around having to use switches and doors, and became a integral part of the design.

Okay, all things seriously, good job on this wad honestly. I wasn't really able to show it off in full because of how hard it was on Nightmare, (With me doing my Nightmare November challenge and all) but I really enjoyed it anyway. The texture work and alignment is masterful, and @Doomkid's music is masterful. The only part I feel like even on Ultra-Violence it would be a little extreme is the very end with those Revenants and Barons, it's a little too much.

Anyway, here is my review, I'll post my full playthrough footage later in the evening. Enjoy!

edit: I may have accidentally forgotten to put my usual Lancer theme at the beginning of the video. Here is a reupload with everyone's favorite Lancer theme.

Alright, I finally got to play this one.

I guess the best way to describe the map is if The Ultimate Doom's E4M3: Sever The Wicked had been designed by the Casali brothers.

But I must ask: how do I reach the large cell pack on top of the pillar with the Arch-Vile?Nevermind, that one was fairly easy to figure out.

@Pistoolkip Just to be clear, I did enjoy the map overall. Some bits were a little frustrating, but since you were probably going for a Thy Flesh Consumed/Plutonia-style difficulty, I cannot really complain. All things considered, it might even be more forgiving than the standard Plutonia map.

Like others stated before me, a community project in that style could be fun. "Knee-Deep In The Wood5"? :P

Some people find it too hard, some people find it too easy. To be honest, if you do find it too difficult, you can always play it at a lower difficulty. But the final room has some nasty tricks, I'll give you that.

Thanks for playing.

Coincidentally enough, I replayed it this morning and it went pretty smoothly. Like with Plutonia, the first playthrough is usually the most frustrating one, since you are most unprepared for whatever ambush and trap waiting for you. However, I do appreciate that it is still forgiving enough to leave me plenty of room to manoeuver and especially to retreat back to safety. I have also never really felt the urge to use the BFG, although in hindsight, I reckon it would have definitely made my life easier against the final Arch-Vile.

Ha, the composition of the map + the sky and choice of Wood5 made me open this thread with the intention of jokingly asking if this map was a cheeky preview for a Slith sequel. Cool to know that it's in the works.

Very pleasing to the eye. I like the BFG trap quite a bit, it's a pretty mean pincer.

Not only one texture and two pictures on walls and ceiling present Doom 1 episode 4.

What are you trying to say?

There are such textures FLAT5_1 Flat5_2 Floor0_1 Fllor4_6 Rrock04 Ceil5_2.

Those are not textures, those are flats.
